1Not more than a decade ago, students dressed in caps andgowns were forced to sit silent-ly and sweat in the blazing sunas guest speakers offeredwords of wisdom to graduat-ing college seniors duringcommencement.

But during the celebrationsof several of Boston’s newestgraduating classes on Sunday, the ceremonies were far moreinteractive.

With the flood of social me-dia platforms available at peo-ples’ fingertips, officials fromSuffolk and Boston University,as well as Tufts, took full ad-vantage of connecting the au-dience with their respectiveevents.

“You used to tell people toleave their phones at home be-cause basically, your participa-tion was passive. What haschanged, in a great way … isthat the audience is now inte-grated as part of an event likethis,” said George T. Comeau, director of digital and interac-tive communications at Suf-folk University.

Comeau said this year’scommencement had the mosttechnology involved since hestarted working at the schoolin 1987.

“[We] have to look at wheretechnology is going and directhow it is going to help us tellstories,” said Comeau aboutSuffolk’s use of Twitter, Face-book, FourSquare and Storifyyesterday.

Much like Suffolk’s integra-

tion of social media, officials atBoston University used hash-tags to engage both the fami-lies and the students at com-mencement.

“We share things, whetherphotos or musings going on,”said Tom Testa, assistant vicepresident of public relations atBU. “Given that everyone is on-line and everything is on peo-ples’ handhelds, it’s anotherway for people to connect.”

Testa said this is especiallyhelpful for family and friendsacross the country, unable tobe in Boston yesterday.

“It’s a better way to give itthat personal touch,” he said.

Abdel Basset al-Megrahi, theLibyan convicted of the 1988bombing of a PanAm flightover Lockerbie, died of canceryesterday at age 60, leavingmany questions on the attackand its aftermath unanswered.

Megrahi, who said he wasnot responsible for bringingthe jumbo jet down on theScottish town and killing 270people, was found guilty in2001 but was freed in 2009 andreturned to Libya because hehad terminal cancer and wasnot expected to live long.

Megrahi’s brother Mo-hammed told Reuters he haddied at his home in the Libyancapital from complicationsfrom prostate cancer and thefuneral would take place today.

“He was too sick to utteranything on his deathbed,” an-other brother, Abdulhakim, said. “Just because Abdul Bas-set is dead doesn’t mean the

past is now erased,” he said.“We will always tell the worldthat my brother was innocent.”

The decision by officials inScotland to return Megrahi toLibya angered relatives ofmany victims, 189 of whomwere American, and was criti-cized by Washington asMegrahi returned to a hero’swelcome from Muammar

Andrew Policano is thedean of the School ofBusiness at Universityof California-Irvine. His

latest book — “Public No More:A New Path to Excellence forAmerica’s Public Universities”— was co-authored with for-mer University of Iowa Busi-ness School dean, Gary Fethke. It will be released this week byStanford Business Books.

Do you believe that we are facing the end of publicly fundedhigher education in the U.S.?Yes. But what we mean by thisis no longer being dependanton the state for the primarysource of funding. It does notmean a lack of access or diversi-ty.You write that a truly public university is no longer sustainable. Is a 35 percent taxrate for the wealthy sustainable? Are these issues related?Tax rates will have to go up foreveryone over the next decade. Those long-term trends arepretty clear. That’s the macro. But the micro here is the ques-tion of efficiency with most ma-

jor public universities. For in-stance, most of them offer atleast 80 undergraduate majors. Some offer more than 200. Isthat scope efficient in any senseof the word? Our model is ahigh tuition, high financial aidmodel, rather than the currentlow tuition, high subsidy mod-el. Ours is more market-fo-cused, reacting to the needs ofthe marketplace and the stu-dents.But when we alter public higher

education to reflect consumerchoices, do we risk having luxurygyms on campuses at theexpense of rigorous study?I think there’s some truth tothat. But the issue is that some-body’s willing to pay for luxurygyms, and it’s reflected in theprice of their education. But ifyou’re doing a lot of things onpublic campuses that peopleare not willing to pay for — tax-payers, students, donors — youhave to ask why you’re subsi-dizing it.Are too many people influencingdecisions at public universities? We have a lot of governanceresting with the faculty at thelower levels, and a lot at theboard of regents — the higherlevel — and very little in themiddle. That creates havocwith trying to be innovative. That sounds democratic. Why is that bad?The most democratized coun-try in the world is India.Democracy is important. Toomuch of it is very inefficient.

Is it the endof the publicuniversity?

BRUCE WALSHbruce.walsh@metro.us

To remain sustainable, many public universitiesmay have to streamline their programs.

When you open up a new videogame, do you read the instruc-tions? Of course not. It’s justmore fun to jump in and startpressing buttons. And, accord-ing to author Karl M. Kapp, that’s an instinct that educatorsshould harness.

In his latest book, “TheGamification of Learning andInstruction,” Kapp lays out hisvision for appropriating theprinciples of video game design

for the classroom. Surprisingly, his theories have little to dowith online learning and moreto do with the nuts and bolts ofthe traditional classroom.

“If we’re clever about it, wecan get to what really mattersin games: It gives people asense of purpose and mission, and it taps into our internaldrives to overcome challenges,”says Kapp, a professor atBloomsburg University. “It’s

about thinking like a game de-signer. They think challengefirst, interactivity first, engage-ment first. In training, we tendto think content first. But con-tent doesn’t mean anything un-less it’s in a certain context.”

For Kapp, at the heart of awell-designed course is provid-ing students with an opportuni-ty to learn as they fail — tothrow away the instructionmanual and get right to work.

“Recently I oversaw an in-vestigator training class, andthe first day they said, ‘todaywe’re going to learn the modelfor investigating,’” explainsKapp. “I think that’s a bad mod-el. As soon as the person walksinto the class, you should say,‘look, someone’s been accusedof embezzling $10,000. Whatare you going to do?’”

Bono’s equity firm,Elevation Partners, bought 2.3percent of the social network in2009 for $90 million, and afterFriday’s initial public offering, that share is now worth $1.5 bil-lion. Paul McCartney is the pre-vious “richest man in rock”title-holder, with an estimatedworth of $1.05 billion. Of course,Bono has to split his take amongElevation investors, soMcCartney may have nothing toworry about.

‘House’ closes its doors

If you’re one of the dedicatedfew who have been faithfullyshowing up to your weekly“House” appointments, youknow it’s been amateur hourat Princeton-PlainsboroTeaching Hospital for the pastcouple of episodes. But withWilson (Robert Sean Leonard)on his death bed and Dr.House (Hugh Laurie) staringdown prison, we’re bettingtonight’s finale (at 8 on Fox)will be packed with familiarfaces. Here’s who we expectto make an appearance — orat least send flowers.

Mark our words: LisaEdelstein has spent the pastthree months at Pilates forher final pencil-skirt close-up.She may be through with Dr.House, but she’s not throughwith bending over a too-lowdesk to sign off on charts.

Over the past eight seasons,Chase handed in his letter ofresignation more often thanHouse quit Vicodin. You canexpect Jesse Spencer and hissoap opera-hot Aussie accentto be back in a white coattonight.

Kal Penn’s character commit-ted suicide when the actorwent to work for Obama. Butbeing alive isn’t a prerequi-site for a cameo, and thesedays he only has “Harold &Kumar” commitments.

Amber’s (Anne Dudek)death and follow-up Househauntings didn’t really makesense the first time aroundin Season 5. But with Wilsondying, an appearance by hisex-wife’s ghost is in order.

Don’t fear

the reaper

Although the series’ finalepisode is titled “EverybodyDies” — a play on House’susual motto, “everybodylies” — it’s not necessarilythe terminally ill Wilsonwhose time is up tonight.

For a show that has neverplayed by the reaper’s rules,it seems unlikely that the on-ly consistently likable charac-ter will flatline. Now, as forHouse? That’s a different story.

The question: I feel like I’m nevermyself in social situations. It isalmost like I’m a chameleon and Ijust try to blend in with everyoneelse. I'm not sure exactly why I'mlike this. Do you have any insightinto this and tips?

My guess is that youget anxious in socialsituations becauseyou fear how people

might respond. Perhaps you’reafraid of rejection or judgmentand you adapt by trying to belike others. Though it maymake sense on one level, you’re missing out on beingyou, while others miss out onseeing who you truly are. Fol-low this exercise taken frommy book, “BE FEARLESS:Change Your Life in 28 Days.”

1Before you can be yourselfyou must know who you

are: for example, what youstand for and what makes youtick. Know where you come

from and where you’re going. How would you describe your-self if someone asked? Be ableto give such a description withease and confidence. Make alist of your convictions, beliefs, passions, values and strengths.

2Understand the role thathiding behind a mask plays

in your life. Are you shy, anx-ious or unsure? Do you feel in-adequate? Or perhaps you areafraid to shine or dislike atten-tion. If so, seek help to addressany underlying issues.

3Practice expressing yourselfby writing out your

thoughts and feelings, includ-ing how you feel about your-self, situations you might ex-perience on a daily basis andpeople you might encounterduring the day. Learn to ex-press yourself clearly.

4Don’t care so much abouthow others perceive you.

The more you do, the moreyou are trying to fulfill theirexpectations and not yourown.

5Do away with social com-parisons. They only lead to

resentment and move youaway from being who you tru-

ly are.

6Finally, practice opening upto people you trust by start-

ing a conversation, talkingabout your day and how youfeel. Be honest and forthrightwhen expressing yourself.

How to staypositive atworkIt’s no easy task when your inboxis flooded, your budget keepsshrinking and your boss isbreathing down your neck, but ifyou can find a way to remain pos-itive at your job, you’ll see itmakes for a completely new envi-ronment. Of course, this is easiersaid than done, but with the

right tools you’ll be whistlingwhile you work.

“Get out of the office,”suggests Kristen Brown, stresscoach and founder of HappyHour Effect LLC. “Don’t chainyourself to your desk, go to tradeshows or conferences. Go out fora walk on your breaks. Hold con-ference calls in a different loca-tion than your desk. The changeof scenery keeps you engagedand gives you a feeling offreedom on the job.” Your brain ishappier when you’re not staringat the same four walls.

Mary Hladio, founder andmanaging director of Ember Car-riers Leadership Group, recom-mends you “draw positive ener-

gy from others.” Hladiounderstands that your co-work-ers have the ability to forecastyour own mood. “Surround your-self with positive people — thatcan be a boost when you can’tdo it by yourself.”

Sarah Hathorn, CEO andfounder of Illustra Consulting re-

minds us that “attitude is achoice we make. Your frame ofmind is not random; it’s apersonal decision you makeevery day.” Hathorn imagines themind as a station. “Turn the dialon the radio of your mind to anupbeat station that plays encour-agement, confidence and grati-tude. Tune out the agitating gos-sip, the speculative rumors andthe rumblings of dissatisfaction.”

Hladio also insists on the im-portance of random acts of kind-ness. “We all feel positive whenwe do something nice for otherpeople,” she says. “It contributesto a sense of well-being andoverall satisfaction. Plus, it’s con-tagious.” JULIA WEST

According to Wendy Booth ofthe National Dog Groomers As-sociation of America, onlyabout 5 percent of groomerspursue continuing education toadvance themselves.

As of now, pet grooming isstill an almost completely un-regulated, unlicensed industry.Grooming schools do not offerany official industry certifica-tion. However, formal instruc-tion with professionalgroomers provides a newbiewith a leg up on about 95 per-cent of the competition.

“They had an abundance ofdogs that people could work[with] hands-on. I was workingon a giant schnauzer, a terriermix, a Bedlington terrier and aNorwegian duck tolling retriev-er, all in one week,” says Char-lotte Reed, who attended theNew York School of DogGrooming and later authored“The Miss Fido Manners Com-plete Book of Dog Etiquette.”

Taking just one course froma reputable school can dissolvecommon misconceptions, help-ing students determine if thebusiness is truly for them.

“So many people think thatdog groomers get to play withdogs all day. That’s not it at all. It’s a timed commercialprocess,” Booth says.

But even in a down econo-

my, new grooming businessescontinue to sprout up, like afresh coat of fur.

“In the past, grooming wasmostly offered in veterinarianoffices with a few professionalgroomers,” explains Reed.“Since the ’90s, there’s been aninflux of doggie day care, homegrooming and mobile groom-ing, and there are still plenty ofdogs that need haircuts everymonth in almost any location.”

Femaleexecutives stillface barriers, some of theirown makingA new study examining the ca-reer paths of female executivesworldwide is set for public con-sumption this week. “Women inBusiness: Navigating Career Suc-cess” is based on a scholarlystudy by U.K.-based AshridgeBusiness School researchers VikiHolton and Fiona Elsa Dent.

The results promise to beeye-opening for women andmen alike.

The analysis was culled froma detailed survey completed byover 1,400 women in businessmanagement positions, plusface-to-face interviews with 20female executives.

Surprisingly, the barriers toadvancement — and attitudestoward female leadership —were extraordinarily similar. While policies vary wildly fromcountry to country, the level ofin-house discriminationendured by women seems to berelatively the same globally, ac-cording to this study.

“There was very little differ-

ence from any of the cultures: SriLanka, the Middle East, Chinaand Europe,” says Dent. “They allhave their particular approach towomen in business. There weredifferences in the kinds of barri-ers they faced, but womendidn’t seem to be faring any bet-ter or worse.”

Holton and Dent also discov-ered that woman unnecessarilydisqualify themselves from ad-vancement more frequentlythan men.

“The biggest hindrance toadvancement was the womanherself and her self-belief andconfidence,” says Dent. “Whena woman sees a promotion shemight go for, she’ll look at thekey skills and say, ‘I don’t haveall of these, I better develop my-self more.’ Whereas, typically, aman is more likely to look at thejob and go, ‘Yeah, I can do mostof that. I’ll have a go.’”

Pleasant surpriseCeltics picked up journeyman Ryan Hollins in late March Has

surpassed expectations Playing vital role in frontcourt this postseasonRyan Hollins isn’t going tomake or break the Celtics.

His job, quite simply, is toeat up minutes and providesome length for the Celtics es-pecially when Kevin Garnettneeds a breather.

Garnett, the C’s best playerin the postseason and ar-guably their MVP throughoutthe regular season, can’t playthe entire game, although wewish he could.

That leaves minutes forHollins and Greg Stiemsma.Stiemsma was the team’s go-tobackup big for the first half ofthe year, but Hollins, signed offwaivers on March 23, has takenthat spot on the depth chart.

Averaging 1.7 rebounds,0.7 blocks, and 2.0 points in12.7 minutes per game in thepostseason, it’s clear thatHollins is nowhere near the

top of the C’s productionchart. But he doesn’t have tobe. He can contribute in a vari-ety of different ways.

Back on May 11, Celticshead coach Doc Rivers told thepress one reason as to whyHollins gets the playing time

he does:“Honestly, he’s an irritant.

He pisses guys off in practice. He does. He irritates people.”

And on Friday, you saw that.In the first quarter, Hollins gottangled up with Sixers young-ster Evan Turner after thewhistle, refusing to move hiselbow away from the neck ofTurner. It wasn’t dirty, it wasjust Hollins being Hollins. It got under Turner’s skin,

and may have contributed tohis atrocious first half of shoot-ing, 2-of-14 from the field.

So, don’t expect Hollins todrain jumpers and rip downboards at a rapid pace. But if hecan play some head games andhelp the C’s compete withoutKG, his success will continue.

‘Heated’ talksparks SoxThe reason for the RedSox’s (20-21) recent hotstreak may now just becoming to light. Accord-ing to FOX Sports, DavidOrtiz called a players-on-ly meeting the day afterBeckett’s implosion andthe discussions inside theclubhouse turned “heat-ed,” according to oneanonymous player.

Position playersreportedly called out theteam’s pitching staff, which has been blamedfor much of the team’swoeful start to the 2012season. The pitching staffwas told to “step it up”by the hitters.

Shockingly enough,Josh Beckett has beenone of the catalysts of theteam’s recentturnaround. He worked7.2 innings against thePhillies in the Red Sox 5-1 win yesterday, allowingjust one earned run onseven hits. METRO/MB

ReversecourseHad the Celtics taken care ofbusiness on Friday, they’d beset to clinch the series tonightin Boston. As we’re all wellaware, they flopped in the sec-ond half, and here we arenow, all tied up.

Kevin Garnett is the C’smost important player goingforth, and look no furtherthan the last four games forproof. In the two games thatthe C’s have won, Garnett

combined for 56 points, 24 re-bounds, 3 blocks, and 3turnovers. In the two losses,KG has tallied just 24 points,23 rebounds, 4 blocks, and 11turnovers. Game 4 was by farhis worst performance yet,and for the C’s to win tonight(7 p.m., TNT), he’ll have to be abigger part of the offense.

Rajon Rondo has registered double-digit assists in all four games of the series thus far.
