We would like to invite everyone to our sale, we appreciateall of you, whether you come to view the cattle or enjoy aday visiting. Please come share the day with us and let us treat you.
Thank you,Ken and DonnaKurt and SamMarvin and Ashley
It is the time of year where we need to catch up with all of you and let you know what is happening
around our ranch. The year has been good to us it started out with a great sale in 2009, despite the
horrible weather. We had snow the week of the sale. We were plowing snow around the barn and
corrals, to clean it up for sale day. The day ended up being fairly warm with no snow. The snow
basically ended for the rest of the year, but the sale of our bulls did not. They continued selling right
through to March, until we ran out of bulls. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You. Marvin was able to get
all the bulls delivered just fine. He drove all over Montana and neighboring states. We feel like he is
the lucky one, because he has the opportunity to visit all the ranches.
Ken always likes calving season. He gets to see the fruits of his labor. I would challenge anyone to
see if they study their herd sires as much as he does. He told me one day this year, there is nothing
like getting a new catalog in the mail; it is just like Christmas to him. We try to go to as many bull
sales as possible, he is afraid he will miss something out there and we desire to stay on top of today's
genetics. Our priority for our operation is to offer quality at the right price, giving you the customer a
worried free calving season with the quality in the fall either with your steers or your heifers. He has
worked these past years to get everything put together in a complete package with maternal,
muscling, milk and of course disposition (I insist on it, if he wants my help). Ken continues to keep a
close eye on all the calves for the sale. He is constantly watching them change, some for the good
and also some for the bad. We do continue to cull them, so we feel we are giving our customers the
best. Be sure to check out the epds, they are our best offering.
Now it is sale time, the bulls and heifers are weaned. They have weaned well this year and are just
sitting around waiting to get their feed every day. Once again we are weaning them on weaning pellets
& free choice grass hay and we will continue to feed them during the winter with bull challenger pellet
& free choice grass hay. We hope to deliver once again in March and April.
This fall we helped host the Montana Red Angus Association's tour. What a weekend of fun! Met a lot
of people and were glad to show our cattle to all of them. We then hosted an Accelerated Genetics
tour at our place. It was great to meet representatives from all around the states.
I continued to be the association's secretary/treasurer this past year, but will be resigning this October.
I have truly enjoyed my duties. I believe the highlight has always been meeting new people and
touching base with old friends. I met and got a chance to know so many of you, and feel that I can call
all of you my friends. It is time to move on and tend to some duties here at the ranch. I have put them
on hold and we are thinking it is time to get them done and caught up. Thanks for putting trust in me
and know I took pride in representing the Montana Red Angus Association.
When you purchase an animal from us, we know you are putting your faith in our program. We feel
you are taking part of us with you and we will be here to help. If there is a problem, we will strive to fix
it. If there is not a problem, "it is music to our ears". Please let us know how we can better serve you.
We love showing our cattle to you, so stop by anytime. Ken loves to talk cattle every day, all day.
Quality does not cost, it Pays!!

Predicting Profit…
Completely Described Beef Production:
Profit starts at Reproduction!Research has shown that reproduction
has four to ten times the economic
impact of carcass traits. Yet, Red Angus
is the only breed that completely
describes cow herd reproduction from
birth through profitable lifespan. Red
Angus reproductive EPDs are expressed
as percent probability, meaning the high-
er the EPD, the more likely the desired
observation.
Profitable reproduction can beboiled down to success in thesefour Economically RelevantTraits:Calving Ease Direct (CED): The expect-
ed progeny difference of calves being
born unassisted from two year-old
heifers. The Red Angus CED model
accounts for contemporary group birth
weight differences and calving ease
scores.
Heifer Pregnancy (HPG): The expected
progeny difference of heifers conceiving
to calve at two years of age.
Calving Ease Maternal (CEM): The
expected progeny difference of a given
animal's daughters calving unassisted at
two years of age.
Stayability (STAY): The expected proge-
ny difference of a bull's daughters
remaining in the herd until at least six
years of age. Females that don't stay in
the herd that long are losing money, and
they also contribute to a higher rate of
replacement females that the rancher
can’t cash crop.

Guide to EPDs” or a Red Angus Sire
Summary, contact this breeder or the
Red Angus Association of America.
EPDs (Expected ProgenyDifferences) are the mostpowerful selection tool thebeef industry has ever had.The use of EPDs has converted
selecting range bulls from an art
form to a science, better preparing
cow/calf producers to make genetic
decisions which may ultimately
improve their profitability.
Better Selection Tools Make Better BullsRed Angus remains the only major
beef breed with mandatory Total
Herd Reporting (THR), which
requires the annual production of
each cow and the performance of
every calf raised through weaning to
be reported. Red Angus EPDs are
calculated from complete contempo-
rary group data - not just the data
from the calves good enough to reg-
ister.
…The Ranchers Guide to EPDs
Reproduction • GrowthCarcass • Maintenance
Cows Eat Money! That’s why Red
Angus published the Mature Cow
Maintenance Energy EPD (ME EPD),
becoming the first beef breed to evaluate
the expense side of the ranchers' profit
equation. Here are the facts:
• ME predicts differences in maintenance
energy requirements of mature daughters of
a bull.
• Maintenance energy requirements are
directly related to feed cost - often producers’
largest single expense.
• The lower the ME EPD, the less feed
daughters require to maintain body condition.
• ME can be used to ensure environmental fit,
and to estimate additional feed required by
increased growth & milk.
Growth & Carcass Traits!Red Angus publishes genetic pre-
dictions for birth weight, weaning
weight, yearling weight, milk, total
maternal, marbling score, rib eye
area, and 12th rib fat thickness.
Red Angus utilizes real time ultra-
sound data in conjunction with actu-
al carcass data in the calculation of
marbling and rib eye area EPDs.
Genetic predictions for each of
these revenue traits are more reli-
able because they are built with
Total Herd Reporting.

The Maternal side of any cow/calf operation collec-tively has a genetic impact equivalent to that oper-ation’s herdbulls. Additionally, their potential to affect pro-
ducers’ bottom lines through reduced maintenance costs is
far greater.
The Red Angus program was developed to assist
commercial producers in capturing the added value of the
superior Red Angus maternal genetics by:
• Promoting the maternal benefits of their Red Angus
influenced replacements.
• Expanding marketing opportunities for the female half of
their calf crop.
What’s in it for you?• FREE listing of your replacement females
on the RAAA website.
• Targeted promotion of the maternal benefits of Red Angus
influenced replacements.
• Opportunity to merchandise replacements out of Red Angus,
Angus Plus and Red Angus Hybrid/ Composite bulls.
• RAAA staff working with industry partners & existing
markets to provide greater sales opportunities.

Service Sires
Bred HeifersSelecting bred heifers for the sale is always a challenge. This year we selected AI and pasture bred
females. This group of highly maternal heifers should raise some real powerful calves. Any heifers that don'tsell sale day will go right back into the herd. Come take a look, I think you'll like them.
Registered and commercial heifers were AI'd 5/19 and 5/20. The heifers were ultrasounded on 7/17. Theirexpected calving date and service sire is listed under EPDs. This year after AI'ing, we had all the heifers inone pasture and used BB, CC, & DD as pasture bulls (Group 1), so calves born non AI will have to be DNA'dfor sire. Laubach Red Angus will pay for tests.

It's always hard to pick which heifers to putin the sale and which ones to keep. This yearwe selected from the middle to younger end.I'm not going to write foot notes on individualheifers but I think there's some real neat heifersoffered with great numbers and phenotype. Anyheifers that don't sell sale day will go rightback into the herd.
