WALK FOR LIFE - The Bangladesh Sustainable Club
Foot Program. Colin MacFarlane is a member of Rotary
eClub One in our district. His home bases are Melbourne,
Australia and Dhaka, Bangladesh. Among his many achieve-
ments and his dedicated service to humanity, Colin founded
Operation Cleft which has now changed the lives of over
5,000 children in Bangladesh, that is now an International Ro-
tary Project supported by hundreds of clubs in Australia and
overseas. In 2008, he founded Walk for Life to correct club
foot deformity in young children in Bangladesh.
Approximately one of 1,000 children born in Bangladesh is
born with club feet, which amount to 5,000 children a year.
Most of these children go untreated. Colin expects that ap-
proximately 2,000 children will be under treatment this month.
The Walk for Life organization uses the Ponseti Method. It was developed by Dr. Ignacio V.
Ponseti of the University of Iowa in the 1950s, and was repopularized in 2000 by Dr. John
Herzenberg in the USA and Europe and in Africa by NHS surgeon Steve Mannion. It is a
standard for the treatment of club foot. No surgery is needed. Through a process of manipu-
lation for four to six weeks and then use of a cast, followed by the use of a brace for 2-3 years,
the method has a 95% success rate in children under 12
months old. Walk for Life has established 60 kilome-
ters as the desired maximum distance for people to
travel to obtain treatment for their children. Colin’s
observation is that life is very bleak for those individu-
als with club feet. Approximately one third of the beg-
gars in Bangladesh have club feet. With $250,000 in
donations this year, the project still needs considerably
more funds to expand the program in the country.

Is it the TRUTH?

Reading, writing, and rebuilding. In August 2008, the Ca-
nadian International Development Agency contacted Past RI
President Wilfrid J. Wilkinson to invite Rotary to participate in
the Afghanistan Challenge, a partnership between the Canadian
government and several service organizations to help rebuild
Afghanistan. Twenty-three district governors accepted, and the
Canadian Rotary Centennial Afghanistan Challenge was born.
Wilkinson and 2008-09 RI Vice President Monty J. Audenart, who helped rally the support of
district leaders, approached Past District Governor David T. Robinson for ideas. At the time,
Robinson was president of the Canadian Rotary Collaboration for International Development
(CRCID), a supplemental funding source for Canadian Rotary club projects and programs.
Robinson knew what to do – build a school – and who to go to: Past District Governor Ste-
phen R. Brown, of the Rotary Club of La Jolla Golden Triangle, California.
Robinson had met Brown – who is now a Rotary Foundation trustee along with Wilkinson –
several years earlier and knew of his efforts with fellow club member Fary Moini to build a
school and other educational facilities in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar Province. With the gener-
osity of Rotarians across Canada, Brown’s contacts in Afghanistan, and Robinson’s experi-
ence at CRCID, it took little time for the project – a 20-classroom school in Jalalabad – to
take shape.
The Rotary Club of Calgary Heritage Park, Alta., took the lead on working with CRCID, and
the Rotary Club of Winnipeg coordinated donations. Four of the 23 participating districts con-
tributed money from their District Designated Fund toward a Foundation Matching Grant
with the Rotary Club of Jalalabad to purchase school furnishings, including desks and com-
puters.
―The Matching Grant application came at a time when funds were severely limited at the
Foundation due to the economic downturn,‖ Audenart says. ―The Foundation should be rec-
ognized for being a valuable partner in this centennial project.‖
In all, the districts raised over $250,000, which the Canadian International Development
Agency matched by contributing $238,777. Construction on the school, Nasrat II, began in
January with the full approval and cooperation of Afghan officials. Heading up the building
process is Mohammad Ishaq Niazmand, who served as charter president of the Jalalabad club.
(Continued on page 6)
6
Reading, Writing, and Rebuilding (Continued from page 5)
―Through the assistance of Rotary in Canada, the school will accommodate 4,000 students,‖
says Niazmand. More than two-thirds of them will be girls, which signifies a dramatic shift in
access to, and attitudes about, education for females in Afghanistan. Less than a decade ago,
fewer than one million Afghan children were enrolled in school, and nearly all were boys. To-
day, nearly six million students are enrolled, and more than a third are girls.
Nasrat II follows the design plan of another facility built by Niazmand and his team. Niaz-
mand calls it ―one more ring in a chain of assistance‖ that has enabled Rotary to ―win the
hearts and minds‖ of the people of Jalalabad and Nangarhar Province. ―Education is funda-
mental for change in this war-ravaged country and will greatly contribute to changing a cul-
ture of war to a culture of peace,‖ he says.
Afghan girls learn outdoors as they
await completion of the new school. Construction on Nasrat II continues.
ClubRunner News Rotary International's new OneRotary database integration initiative allows Rotary clubs and
districts to link their databases directly to the master membership database maintained at RI
World Headquarters.
OneRotary is now available to clubs and districts using ClubRunner, the first company to
offer this integration feature to its customers. ClubRunner has worked closely with RI to es-
tablish technical guidelines, and several other database providers anticipate offering the On-
eRotary integration feature in the coming months.

A GARY MERAZ TRUE STORY
A man went to the movies and was surprised to find a
woman with a big collie sitting in front of him. Even more
amazing was the fact that the dog always laughed in the
right places through the comedy.
“Excuse me,” the man said to the woman, “but I think it’s
astounding that your dog enjoys the movie so much.”
“I’m surprised myself,” she replied. “He hated the book.”
THE FUTURE
Future Vision Plan
The Rotary Foundation Future Vision Plan aims to increase efficiency and
develop a more strategic focus for the Foundation. A three-year pilot of the
plan’s new grant structure began July 2010 and involves about 100 Rotary
districts worldwide.
Clubs in pilot districts do not participate in current Foundation programs
(except for PolioPlus and Rotary Peace Fellowships). Instead, these districts
may apply for district grants, which will enable them to carry out local and
international projects of their choice, and global grants, which support pro-
jects and activities in six area of focus: peace and conflict preven-
tion/resolution, disease prevention and treatment, water and sanitation, mater-
nal and child health, basic education and literacy, and economic and commu-
nity development.
During the pilot, the Foundation will phase out current educational and hu-
manitarian grants and refine the plan for participation by all Rotary districts
in July 2013.
