Implications?  Why does this matter?

• The data show patterns that exist…or don’t exist• For your institution

– Where did you expect to see more transfers to/from? Are you surprised to see so many transfers to/from a particular institution?

– Do you need to target support to a different mix of institutions to match student mobility.  Do you need to bump up support to boost a traditional feeder relationship?

– Are your data accurate?  In the future Illinois longitudinal data system with comprehensive and accurate data, maybe we could reward sending institutions for students who transfer and complete at another institution.

20

Implications?  Why does this matter?

• Statewide– Shows mobility across sectors, to/from private and proprietary insts– Important to learn that nearly as many students transferred to

community colleges as transferred to public universities or independent institutions

• For example, in u.select we have targeted public universities for receiving status.  Need to expand?

• Do our policies reflect the reality of mobility? Transportable financial aid, for example.

– Need to clean up data for Longitudinal System, particularly in transfer from “unknown” institutions.  Ensure definitions are consistent.

– If we really have such a level of transfer from foreign and out of state institutions, do our policies support these students?

– Have transfer patterns changed over time?
