This property relates to linear measurement This means it has to do with the measurements of lines.

If line A is longer than line B, and line B is longer than line C, then A is longer than C.

Line A

Line B

Line C

Let’s take this apart and see what it means.

You could also state its opposite

If line A is longer than line B, and line B is longer than line C, then A is longer than C.

Line A

Line B

Line C

Let’s take this apart and see what it means.

You must keep up with what the line letters are. In your mind make a mental picture of the length. The line could be other things that you measure the length….like a pencil or a log.

Let’s try an example.

• You know that pencil A is too long to fit in your pencil box.

• Pencil B is longer than pencil A.

• Will pencil B fit in the pencil box?

Pencil

Box

Pencil A is too long to fit in the pencil box.

Pencil B is longer than pencil A.

Pencil A

Pencil B

If pencil A can’t fit in because it is too long, will pencil B fit in?

Pencil A

Pencil B

If pencil A can’t fit in because it is too long, will pencil B fit in? Of course not! It is even longer than pencil A!!!

Pencil

These logs are 7 feet long.

These logs are 5 feet long.

These logs are 5 feet long.

The log truck’s bed is shorter than these logs.

Will the truck carry the 7 foot logs?

NO! If it cannot carry the 5’ logs, it cannot carry the 7’ logs because they are even LONGER!

If A is longer than B, and B is longer than C, then A is longer than C.

The 7’ logs were A, the 5’ logs were B, and the truck bed was C. So the 7” (A) longs are longer than the truck bed (C).

= A

= B

= C

Make up a problem of your own, using pictures, that will help illustrate this property so that others will understand it better.
