PresidentIn 1491 Ignatius Loyola was born in the family castle

at Azpeitia in the Basque province of Spain. H e was the youngest of thirteen children.

Ignatius’ early education went no further than the art of reading and writing.

Ignatius and His First Followers.W hile still a student in Paris, Ignatius gathered

a group of disciples. They were trained in the spiritual life by him, and became the first mem­bers of the Society of Jesus.
