The Townshend Act placed a tax on glass, lead, paint, paper, and tea that was

imported into the colonies.

The purpose of the Townshend Act tax was to raise money as well as to demonstrate parliament’s right to tax the colonies.

Colonists organized protests and agreed to boycott British imports.

Colonists threatened to use violence against

the tax collectors and against merchants who

continued to import British goods.

This scene shows colonists tarring and

feathering a merchant to publicly disgrace his

loyalty to Britain.

The British government sent more soldiers to

Boston to protect their tax officials.

The arrival of British troops in Boston Harbor, 1768.

Women helped with the boycott by

replacing the cloth that would have

been imported from England.

Women finished their chores at home and then gathered to weave all day. Because of their hard

work, colonists did not have to import British cloth.

The boycott greatly reduced the imported goods from England. British merchants lost a great deal of money.

In 1770, British Parliament repealed the taxes on lead,

glass, paint, and paper.

However, they left

the tax on tea.

Did the colonists accept the tax on tea?

No!The colonists smuggled in Dutch tea

through the Caribbean.
