Bed Bug Resident Training
What They Are, What to Look For, and How to Keep Them Out
Know Your Enemy: Basics
• Feed exclusively on blood, about once per week
• Nocturnal and secretive
• Can survive up to one year without feeding
• Females lay 1-3 eggs every day, which hatch in about a week
• Don’t transmit disease
Know Your Enemy: Basics Bed bugs ARE NOT a cleanliness or sanitation issue! Bed bugs are expert hitchhikers and avid travelers.
Know Your Enemy: ID
• Small (< ¼” for adults), reddish-brown
• Oval or football-shaped
• Flat
• Wingless
• Can’t jump but can run quickly
• When in large numbers, can give off a sweet, musty odor
Which of these is a bed bug?
Know Your Enemy: Life Cycle
Young bedbugs look like smaller, paler versions of adult bedbugs. They still feed on blood and live in the same places
adults live.
Infestation Signs: Live Insects
Bed bugs like to hide in the seams of mattresses or the
cracks of bed frames.
Infestation Signs: Feces
Feces will look like dark, rusty spots on bedding.
Infestation Signs: Bites
• Bed bug bites generally will look like clusters of itchy red pimples or welts all over the body.
• HOWEVER…not all people react to bites!
Prevention: Laundry
• Frequent laundering of bedding in hot, soapy water will kill eggs and adults.
• Frequent sheet changes and mattress rotations allow for inspection and early detection.
Prevention: Traveling
• Bed bugs are expert hitchhikers and avid travelers. They love to get into suitcases, sea bags, and laundry to hide during the day.
If Your Room Has Them…
• DO NOT apply any pesticides (sprays, foggers, borax, etc.).
• DO NOT move personal items (clothes, luggage, electronics) to another room until clothing is laundered and a thorough inspection of all items has been made.
• DO tell your Facilities Manager right away.
• DO contact medical for bite treatment.
Remember…
• Bed bugs are not an issue of cleanliness or hygiene. Anyone can be affected at any time.
• Bed bugs do not transmit any human diseases and are not spread sexually or by direct contact between people.
• Bed bugs do not live on their host, but in the host’s mattress and surrounding furniture (unlike lice).
• Reporting bed bug issues early makes successful control more likely.

Over the last 15 years, roughly four Sailors have completed suicide every month!
This makes suicide the second-leading cause of preventable deaths after
automobile crashes.
While the number of suicides in the Navy is well below the national average, the
loss of even one shipmate or friend to suicide is a painful, unnecessary, and
preventable loss.
