Throughout history, farms have often been maintained with pride by families whose leg-acy has been passed down through the genera-tions. Today, with a growing number of mouths to feed every year, many agribusinesses must expand to keep up with the demand.
Rentz Family Farm is a Georgia based family agribusiness that is following that trend, continuously looking for a need and making efforts to satisfy it. Marvin Rentz ran the farm until 2009, when his son and grand-son took over. “Marvin Rentz and Sons” then became “Rentz Family Farm.”
They started off as a row crop operation producing peanuts, cotton and soybeans, adding other produce items in 2012.
“We just wanted to diversity our operation,” said Kevin Rentz, farm co-manager and grand-son of Marvin Rentz. “We were looking for something to keep employees busier.”
Once Marvin Rentz retired, Kevin and his
father became partners in overseeing the daily operations of the farm.
Rentz Family Farm is located in Brinson on the far southwestern corner of the state. There you can find fresh potatoes, squash, water-melon and cantaloupe. The farm is looking to expand into other vegetables, but their profi-
ciency with a winter squash called the hubbard has put Rentz on the map. While you might not recognize the name, you’ll definitely know the flavor. The hubbard squash is the source of the “pumpkin spice” that flavors everything au-tumn, from lattes to dog treats.
And before you ask “Why not just use pumpkin,” remember that pumpkin and squash are in the same family. In fact, the hubbard squash looks very similar to a pumpkin. There are only two other locations in the U.S. – one in Texas and the other in Illinois –that grow hub-bard squash for commercial markets, and the
Texas location is considering moving its production to the Rentz farm because it is so experienced with the crop.
Looking ahead, the Rentz family hopes to continue operating a row crop farm with other diversified produce options for their customers.
Kevin Rentz credits Georgia Grown for the increased interest in his family’s prod-ucts through its widespread marketing of
their services.“It gets our name out there and I get a lot
of contacts from people that have seen it on the website and want to know more about our business and what we can offer. It gets people interested in what we are doing.”

Whether it’s a specialty sweet treat, small-batch pork sausage or pimento cheese made from Grandma’s secret recipe, the University of Georgia’s Flavor of Georgia Food Product Contest shines the spotlight on the state’s craft foods.
The contest, which will celebrate its 10th year in 2016, has served as a springboard for food manufacturers, assisting them in testing new products, reaching a larger audience and breaking into new markets to expand their sales.
Registration for the 2016 Flavor of Geor-gia contest, which is conducted each year by the UGA Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development, is now open at flavorofga.com.
For 10 years, the Flavor of Georgia Food Product Contest has supported the food and drink production industry in Georgia, which
saw over $45 billion in sales in 2013, according to a Center for Agribusiness and Economic Develop-ment study.
“Flavor of Georgia is a unique opportunity for en-trepreneurs to gain public-ity and exposure for their products,” said Sharon P. Kane, a UGA food busi-ness development specialist and the contest’s coordinator. “It’s also a chance for them to network with other food entrepreneurs and industry experts.”
Over the years, more than 1,000 food prod-ucts have been entered in the contest. Today, many of those products are sold in national and regional supermarkets. Others have in-creased their wholesale distribution and Inter-net sales or experienced better traffic at local farmers markets.
In 2015, 100 percent of finalists in the Fla-
vor of Georgia contest reported increased inter-est in their products and an expanded network of business contacts. Some also indicated an increase in full- and part-time em-ployees.
“It’s a great experience that provides networking, exposure and learning
opportunities you won’t find any other way,” said one of those finalists, Margaret Amos of Columbus-based Southern Straws.
Finalists and winners participate in a number of high-profile industry showcases throughout the year following each annual contest, including the Georgia Grown Sym-posium, the Georgia National Fair and show-case days at the Buford Highway Farmers Market. They also receive industry feedback and use of the Flavor of Georgia logo for their product’s packaging and promotional
materials. Product categories for the 2016 contest
include: barbecue sauces, beverages, confec-tions, dairy products, jams and jellies, mari-nades and sauces, meat and seafood, salsas and chutneys and others. There is no limit to the number of products an individual business can submit, but only Georgia-based business-es may enter.
Judges evaluate each product based on flavor, texture and ingredient profile. Also considered are potential market volume, con-sumer appeal and product representation of Georgia.
Registration closes Feb. 5, 2016. Contest finalists will participate in the final round of judging and a public tasting March 14-15 as part of the Governor’s Agricultural Aware-ness Day in Atlanta.
For more information or to register, visit flavorofga.com or call 706-583-0347. Follow twitter.com/FlavorofGA on Twitter and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/flavorofga.

The magazine calls Verdant Kitchen’s ginger gift set “amazing.” Purchase it for yourself or others on your gift list at www.verdantkitchen.com. Use the coupon code OPRAH at checkout and receive a 20 percent discount off the $38 price of the set through Dec. 31.
