3 / 10 Telling stories with photos

Before you start taking pictures, ask yourself what you want to

communicate

• Not just the who and what

• Give a sense of the experience: what makes this unique?

What sets this story apart?

• Shoot variety: distance / angle / subject

• Shoot close ups that show detail

• Show people – show them up close

• Show people doing something that‘s characteristic for them or the

situation / event

• Show action by taking a few shots as a series

4 / 10 Telling stories with photos

Putting together a slide show:

• start with a strong picture, end with a strong picture

• Choose pictures with a good mix of various angles and

distances („pacing“)

e.g. a wide angle -> medium -> extreme

close up -> wide angle Example: http://tocologne.wordpress.com/2012/10/21/feels-like-fall-2012-edition/

• If you decide to use captions, they should be correct and

factual – not a repeat of what the audience sees in the

picture
