What is symmetry? What does it mean to be symmetrical?

Symmetry: ­ The word symmetry is derived from the Greek prefix “syn” which means together, and the Greek Suffix “metron” indicating measurement.

­ An object or image has symmetry if it is balanced and can fit onto itself either by reflection or rotation.

­ The mirrored nature of the two sides of the image is called symmetry.

A mirror image of an object is a reflection of the object. The reflection in the mirror is an exact copy of the image when folded over the line of reflection.

The actual placement of the mirror is the line of reflection. Each part must be the mirror image of the other part. Since both sides of the image are equal, they are symmetrical. This is line symmetry.

Line Symmetry: A type of symmetry that involves dividing an object or image into two identical reflected halves by drawing a straight line through the object. This line is called the line of symmetry. This line can be in any direction; that is a vertical line, a horizontal line, or a oblique(diagonal) line.
