5G Non-Terrestrial Network – The Next Frontier
5G global standards are being defined under the 3GPP initiative
− SATCOM is being defined as part of the system architecture
Currently there are three main application scenarios:
− 5G SATCOM: enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB)
− 5G SATCOM: massive Machine Type Communication (mMTC)
− 5G SATCOM: Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC)
As 5G rolls out, there is a role for satellite to fill “holes” in the terrestrial network of celltowers
MaxarSI 5G strategic roadmap takes us from the satellite manufacturer of today into the leading non-terrestrial network infrastructure provider of tomorrow.

Digital payload strategy
Analog vs. Digital Maxar Strategy
Analog: Traditional “Bent-Pipe” satellite design is efficient and in many cases the best solution, but it is static for the 15+ year life of the satellite
Focus on serial production
Leverage investments and experience with UHDHTS (Jupiter 3)
Digital: Software Defined Satellites allow reprogramming to adapt to different uplinks and downlink patterns on the earth’s surface in support of missions with unknown or changing market and traffic demands (i.e. aeronautical)
Partnering with existing merchant suppliers of digital processors and phased arrays
Focus on flexibility in our architectures to meet customer needs
Ovzon a positive proof point
