10 Stupid Things People Do

To Mess Up Their Lives

Failing To Thank The Lord Of The Sabbath – Part II

November 24th 2002Yakima Evangelical Church

THE ART OF THANKFULNESS

1636 During the Thirty Year’s War

What Martin Rinkart did.

MARTIN EXPERIENCED…

Lasting HOPE that changed his attitude during difficult circumstances.

I Thessalonians 5:16-18

I Thessalonians 5:16-18

“Always be joyful. Always keep on praying. No matter what happens, always be thankful, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.”

MARTIN KNEW THAT… During difficult

circumstances that THANKSGIVING could give an eternal perspective.

Philippians 4:6-7 JEREMIAH 29:11

Philippians 4:6-7“Do not be anxious about

anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Jeremiah 29:11

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

When It Comes To Our Future

God Has Given Us An Opportunity To Be

Thankful… In the O.T. and a N.T. which

make up 66 books of the Bible... God shows us a major transition

from RULES to PRINCIPLES…

GOD KNEW WE NEEDED…

A change from legalistic RULES to…

Grace & Mercy filled PRINCIPLES to guide us.

Defining RULE & PRINCIPLE

A PRINCIPLE is: a general or fundamental law, doctrine, or assumption. It could be considered a rule or code of conduct and devotion to such a code.

Defining RULE & PRINCIPLE

A RULE is: a regulation that guides our actions.

Exodus 20:8-11 If we are to keep the

Sabbath… What Changed or transitioned

from the O.T. to the N.T. when it comes to being rule or principle oriented?

What Changed?

God sent His Son Christ Jesus [John 3:16-17].

John 3:16-17

[16] For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

What Changed?

God sent His Son Christ Jesus [John 3:16-17].

Christ Jesus died & resurrected [John 11:25; Rom. 1:4; Phil. 3:10].

John 11:25

[25] Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies…

Romans 1:4

[4]TALKING ABOUT being a servant of Jesus Christ…and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.

Philippians 3:10

[10] I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death…

What Changed?

God sent His Son Christ Jesus [John 3:16-17].

Christ Jesus died & resurrected [John 11:25; Rom. 1:4;

Phil. 3:10].

Christ Jesus is sitting at the right hand of the father [Col. 3:1]

Colossians 3:1

[1] Since then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.

WITHALLOF

THESECHANGES…

ONE OF THE FOUR BIG CHANGES WE CAN BE

THANKFUL FOR The sign of circumcision is

transformed into the New Covenant sign of baptism.

WHAT THIS MEANS

We are no longer under the law of rules and regulations…

Instead, we are “New” in Christ Jesus [Pass from death to LIFE]

We forgiven and indwelt by the Holy Spirit.

THE SECOND OF FOUR BIG CHANGES WE CAN BE

THANKFUL FOR The Old Covenant Passover

is transformed into the New Covenant Lord’s Supper [Luke 22:17-20; I Cor. 5:6-8]

WHAT THIS MEANS…

Is that the Messiah has come!

It means that Christ Jesus is central to our LORD’s Day Celebration [Explain How].

THE THIRD OF FOUR BIG CHANGES WE CAN BE

THANKFUL FOR The Old Covenant temple

is transformed into the New Covenant temple [I Peter 2:5; I Cor. 3:16 - EXPOUND]

I Peter 2:4-5

[4] As you come to him, the living Stone – rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him –

I Peter 2:4-5

[5] you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

I Corinthians 3:16[16] Don’t you know that you

yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you?

What This Means…

Is that the temple in the O.T. was the place where the priests did all the sacrificing for the peoples sins to be forgiven.

What This Means…

Is that with the changes to baptism, and the Lord’s Supper instead of circumcision and the Passover, we are the temples where Christ Jesus dwells.

What This Means…

Is that you are gifted to minister.

It means that you as a Christian become a have are chosen by God and are important to HIM!

What This Means…

Is that you are in the process of growing up spiritually.

It means that you are loved by God.

It means that you are a priest with the Holy Spirit in you.

THE FOURTH OF FOUR BIG CHANGES WE CAN BE

THANKFUL FOR The Old Covenant Sabbath is

transformed into the New Covenant Sabbath (or Lord’s Day) because of Christ’s Jesus’ resurrection from the dead.

What This Means…Is That…

Our Focus is not on RULE keeping.

Our Focus is on our spiritual freedom in Christ Jesus [forgiveness & our rel. with God].

Our Focus is on the presence of the H.S. that moves us from LEGALISM or RULES to Life Giving GRACE & MERCY [Gifting’s, Victory, & Comfort]

With These Changes…And

Reasons for Being Thankful…

Each of Us Can Experience

New Anticipation[s] Personally & As A

Church…

In Two WaysEVERY Sunday.

Two Ways to Anticipate Sundays

1. ASK WITH ANTICIPATION: “How will Jesus Christ speak to me?” [Listen to the leading]

2. ASK WITH ANTICIPATION:“How will Jesus Christ speak through me?” [Listen to the leading].

How Does All This Apply To the Sabbath (or Lord’s

Day)? Because of Christ Jesus, and

these changes in the Sabbath…

The word translated “rest” in Matthew 11:28-30 was not translated Sabbath when the O.T. was translated into Greek.

Matthew 11:28-30[28]Come to me, all you who

are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest [pause]. [29] Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest [pause] for your souls. [30] For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.

Why Can We Pause or Rest With Thankful

Assurance?

Because of our SALVATION or positional Sanctification in Christ Jesus [I Cor. 1:2].

I Corinthians 1:-2[2] To the church of God in

Corinth, to those sanctified [set apart to God for salvation] in Christ Jesus and called to be holy, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ-their Lord and ours…

A Second Reason Why Can We Pause or Rest With Thankful Assurance?

Because of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit or God’s practical empowerment of us by the Holy Spirit [I Cor. 1:30]

The Third Reason Why Can We Pause or Rest With Thankful Assurance?

Because of our desire and the Holy Spirit’s willingness to break our hearts [mind, will, and emotions] with the things that break God’s heart.

WHY DID GOD COMMAND THE SABBATH (Lord’s

Day)?

To provide time for physical rest.

To provide time for spiritual reflection.

What’s So Stupid About Failing To Be Thankful For

A Lord’s Day Sabbath Pause?

We fail to honor God. We fail to celebrate the right

things [i.e. resurrection, and our positional and practical sanctification.

We fail to receive what God wants to give us personally and what He wants to give and the congregation.

Putting it all In Perspective…

Don’t confuse play and projects with rest and reflection.

Schedule rest… Schedule reflection…
