Balranald secures motorhome rally
by the President, Mr John Horsley, Council prepared a formal submission to host the rally” Ms Ryan added.
“The announcement is very timely”, said Mayor Steve O’Halloran, “as Council had already committed to attending the CMCA Rally in Narrabri from October 21 to promote the Shire as a “staging post” prior to the 28th Anniversary Rally to be held in Robinvale in 2014”. Planning for the Solos’ rally is well underway with
Council working collaboratively with the Balranald Football and Netball Club, other community organisations and local businesses to ensure the event is a success. The objectives of the Solos' Network is to encourage single members and members who lose their partners to begin to, or continue to, enjoy their lifestyle, and to enjoy the fundamental ideals of the CMCA of Fun, Friendship, Fellowship, and Camaraderie.

5 Rivers Outback Festival Success
Balranald Inc. have once again provided the locals and interstate visitors with another successful 5 Rivers Festival over the weekend of 11 – 13 October. Large crowds were entertained throughout the three day weekend with events including chainsaw demonstrations, wood cutting and sawing, mixed media art exhibition and launch of local identity Ken Spinks book, Balranald Looking Forward Looking Back. Market stalls, wool and timber historical exhibitions, an outdoor and camping expo, shearing competition, fashion parade featuring garments made from local wool and a goods auction and entertainment from invited guests Paul DeAraugo and poet, author and entertainer, Murray Hartin, were also activities featured throughout the weekend. The Balranald Central School’s Class of 1993 got in on the act, holding their 20 year reunion the same weekend. Among Sunday’s festivities and conclusion of the festival saw the finale of the wood cutting and shearing events, entertainment from local artist Daniel Barrett and special guests Wendy Matthews and Kate DeAraugo. A great weekend was had by all attendees, and Festival Committee Chairperson, Mia Zaffina estimated “a couple of thousand” attended the festival.

Mayor Steve O’Halloran
Deputy Mayor Lynda Cooke
Once again a successful fundraising Field Day at “Kilfera” was held. Thanks once again to the Linnet family for their efforts and supporting our communities, Western Division Shires and One Association.
I attended the Murray Darling Association Inc. Annual Conference at Goolwa where I had the chance to invite the Parliament Secretary to the Minister for Environment, Senator Simon Burmingham to visit our Shire. I also had the opportunity to discuss matters affecting our Shire with the Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder, David Popps.
Susan Ley MP, Member for Farrer, who was in Balranald to open the 5 Rivers Festival, advised me that she would arrange a visit to Council with Simon and David.
Acting General Manager Robert Rayner, Deputy Mayor Lynda Cooke and I attended the NSW Local Government Conference in Sydney. Approximately 800 Council delegates attended to hear many outstanding speakers.
Cr. Cooke recently attended the local Pumpers Association group meeting. Among matters discussed was our town water and reliance on maintaining the Balranald Low Level Weir. Concerns were raised as to the age of the weir, its long term viability and constant suitable water levels. A request for assistance to facilitate better outcomes for our Weir to Katrina Hodgkinson MP, is still awaiting a response.
Congratulations to the dedication and commitment of the organisers of the 5 Rivers Festival. This weekend was a wonderful success with amazing displays and other unique opportunities for the public to witness. It has been most rewarding for our Council to be a part of this very successful weekend, along with other sponsors and supporters. Truly a great boost for our shire and a special thanks to Balranald Inc. and the Committee for their efforts.
I, along with Council’s representatives, Cr Jolliffe and Acting General Manager Robert Rayner met with the Nimmie Caira Advisory Committee on Monday 14 October. I felt the visit was much reflective of losses and effects on our shire.
Andrew Minns and three other employees from Iluka spent the weekend in Balranald for the 5 Rivers Festival. While here, Andrew took the opportunity to brief Susan Ley in relation to the proposed mining development.
Very special thanks to Council staff, especially Robert
Rayner, Robyn Ryan, John Stevenson and Ray Mitchell
who secured the “Solos Motorhome Rally”.
