7th Sermon:

You’re in Good Hands 1 Peter 5:1–11

“You’re In Good Hands”

1 Peter 51 To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow

elder, a witness of Christ's sufferings and one who also will share in the glory to be revealed:

2 Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, serving as overseers — not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve;

3 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.

4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.

“You’re In Good Hands”

1 Peter 5 cont...

5 Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble."

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.

7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

“You’re In Good Hands”

1 Peter 5 cont...

8 Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.

11 To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.

1 Peter 5:1-5a

1 To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder, a witness of Christ's sufferings and one who also will share in the glory to be revealed:

2 Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, serving as overseers — not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve;

3 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.

4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.

5 Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older.

“You’re In Good Hands” - Shepherds

v1 To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder, ...

Elders* : - position of responsibility- leader

‘Apostle’ Peter : - in humility- in identification

*NB: ‘always’ in the pluralSpeaking to ‘elders’Anyone in any position of leadership

eg DGLs, DGSs, LTs, LCEC, ministry heads ...CFs, BSFs ...

To the ‘leaders’ among you, I appeal as a fellow ‘leader’ ...

“You’re In Good Hands” – Shepherds & Sheep

v2 Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, serving as overseers —

Elders Overseers

Please Note :

GOD’s FLOCK ...

to CARE ...

to SERVE ...

“You’re In Good Hands” – Shepherds & Sheep

Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, serving as overseers —

3 Key Considerations :

1. MINISTRY : not because you must, no compulsionbut because you are willing, willinglyas GOD WANTS YOU TO BE; call is from God

“You’re In Good Hands” – Shepherds & Sheep

Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, serving as overseers —

2. MOTIVE :not greedy for money, monetary gain, ‘get out of it’,

profitbut eager to serve; eagerly, enthusiastically ...

“You’re In Good Hands” – Shepherds & Sheep

Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, serving as overseers —

3. MANNER :not lording it over those entrusted to you, lording, tyrant, domineering, bossily...but being examples to the flock. exemplary, showing the way ...

“You’re In Good Hands” – Shepherds & Sheep

v4 And WHEN the CHIEF SHEPHERD appears, YOU WILL receive the CROWN OF GLORY that will NEVER FADE away.

Reward for our labor“WHEN” – not “if”CHIEF SHEPHERD – Jesus Christ

Also – Good Shepherd (Jn 10:11, 14) or Great Shepherd (Heb 13:20)

YOU WILL – not ‘might’ CROWN OF GLORY NEVER FADE – for eternity

“You’re In Good Hands” – Shepherds & Sheep

Question to all “leaders”

WHO do you serve ?

Is your ‘ministry’ from God ?

WHY do you serve ?

Do you serve eagerly ?

HOW do you serve ?

Do you walk your talk ?

“You’re In Good Hands” – Shepherds & Sheep

v5 Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older.

Shepherds have their responsibilitiesSimilarly for ‘sheeps’BE SUBMISSIVE• easier said than done• submission never come easily• need much discipline & will

Q: Is it easy to be a ‘sheep’ ?

“You’re In Good Hands” – Shepherds & Sheep

Heb 13:17

Obey your leaders and submit to their authority.

They keep watch over you as men

WHO MUST GIVE AN ACCOUNT. Obey them so

that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that

would be of no advantage to you.

Obedience & Submission

Keeping watch over you

Accountable

“You’re In Good Hands”1 Peter 5:5b-75b All of you, clothe yourselves with humility

toward one another, because, "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble."

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.

7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

“You’re In Good Hands”

Key Thought : HUMILITYWHO - All of you – without exceptionWHAT - “Clothe yourselves” –

Gk mean putting on the servant’s apronWHOM - toward one another, WHY - God opposes the proud

- God will give grace to ...HOW - under God's mighty handSo that he may lift you up in due time.

“You’re In Good Hands”

HUMILITYOpposite - PRIDE

PRIDE - I can, I must, I will ....- Others cannot...

ANXIETY - worried, fearful, troubled...- holding on to things, thoughts, situations- unable or unwilling to let go...- extends even to GOD- “God I do not trust you to handle ‘IT’ ”

God’s Offer –v7 Cast ALL your anxiety on HIM because HE cares

for you.

“You’re In Good Hands”

God’s Offer - v7 Cast ALL your anxiety on HIM because HE cares for you.

Jesus example - Phil 2:6-8“Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God ...”

Jesus teaching - Matt 11:29-30Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.

“You’re In Good Hands”

Ps Jerome @ Family Camp- HUMILITY is the key- In order to grow

• HUMILITY before GOD• HUNGER for GOD• HOLINESS of GOD

C S Lewis :

Humility is not thinking less of yourself,

but thinking of yourself less

“You’re In Good Hands”

Theme Verse 2014 - 2 Cor 5:14-1514 For Christ's love compels us, because we are

convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died.

15 And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.

Same ideas conveyed :

“live for ourselves” = PRIDE“living for Christ” = HUMILITY

since you already know this, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of lawless men and fall from your secure position.
