3 releases of hydraulic oil from storm drain
Release believed to originate in nearby service station
EPA issued Pollution Removal Funding Agreement to Oregon DEQ to conduct cleanup
EPA to take lead on assessment

North Ridge Estates Removal Action
North Ridge Estates (NRE), Klamath Falls, OR. Residential subdivision built on the site of a former Marine base. Military structures containing ACM demolished and debris buried on site.
Summer 2012. Asbestos abatement and demolition of Firing Range Annex Guard Shack.
Concrete Asbestos Board with Chrysotile 3-25%.
Roofing material Chrysotile 30-45%. Unrestricted access and
weathering/deterioration posing threat of release from friable material

Pendleton Aluminum Phosphide
Sep. 13, 2012, Pendleton Fire, Hermiston Hazmat responded to drum of spent Aluminum Phosphide
Downwind businesses evacuated UPRR personnel exposed and
reported to hospital EPA Technical Assistance
requested – air sampling Responsible party over-packed
and vented drum. Moved to remote location to continue reaction
Responsible Party same as pesticide plant fire in July 2011

Seattle Release of approximately 4000
lbs anhydrous ammonia from storage/distribution system
Facility and nearby businesses closed, adjacent streets closed
Concerns about management of response with Darigold engineers
Seattle Fire/Hazmat entries EPA conducted air monitoring
at facility perimeter and in community.

Pacific Producer Ammonia Release Fish processing vessel moored at
Fishermans Terminal, Seattle Aug. 30, 2012, approximately 6000
lbs anhydrous ammonia released USCG AOR, Sector Seattle and
Seattle Fire requested EPA technical assistance
EPA conducted air monitoring at 3 locations during assessment and cleanup
Low concentrations detected within 100 feet of vessel
Liquid ammonia compromised responder boots
Responsible Party hired cleanup contractor

East Pierce County Drum Site
Report of 6 drums and various containers abandoned on road
Ecology requested EPA removal assistance
EPA performed air monitoring and hazard categorization
EPA over-packed, transported and disposed of oil and latex paints

Young America Mine Time- Critical Removal Action
Operated 1897 – 1953, Zinc, Lead, Silver, Gold
7-acre mine site across BLM and 4 private properties presently used for recreation
East side of Lake Roosevelt, Columbia River
Heavy Metal Contamination, Lead = 23,000 ppm
Removed buildings, consolidated tailings in repository
Install soil cap on repository, impoundment

Avery Removal Action The site is a former railroad
roundhouse and maintenance facility located on the St. Joe River.
Petroleum hydrocarbons, PAHs and PCBs.
4 property owners, FHWA, Potlatch Corp, Idaho Dept. of Lands, and private citizen
2012 EPA removal addressed: 71,000 tons of contaminated soil 15.25 million gals contaminated
groundwater treated 80 tons of scrap metal recycled.
Work to continue in 2013 to complete Potlatch property

Orofino Asbestos Removal Action
Previously, 12,100 cubic yards of asbestos-contaminated soil and debris removed in 2010 and 2011
Repository built in 2011 to contain contaminated soil
Repository retaining wall settled and integrity compromised
EPA returns Aug. 2012 to fix repository wall
Another 16,860 cubic yards of contaminated soil under gravel cap on vacant lot.
