Happy New Year!In Europe and the USA, the New Year starts on 1st January and is a time for celebration. But some cultures celebrate the start of the New Year at different times and in different ways. The Chinese New Year is based on the stages of the moon, so it can be any time between 24th January and 19th February. It involves giving gifts of money in red envelopes for good luck and there are 15 days of celebrations. These end with lantern processions and lion or dragon dances. In Thailand, New Year (or Songkran) is celebrated in April. Thai people throw water at each other as a sign of respect – or just for fun. The Bangladeshi New Year is in May and the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, is celebrated over two days, usually in September. It’s a tradition to prepare meals with apples and honey to welcome the sweet New Year.
