North DakotaCommon Core State Standards (CCSS)
Grades K-12
Adopted June 2011Effective July 1, 2013
“After July 1, 2013, all public school districts are expected to provide instruction based on these new content standards. Beginning with the 2014-15 academic year, the state will begin the administration of a new generation of state assessments based on these 2011 content standards.”

• College and career readiness standards were developed in the summer of 2009
• Based on the college and career readiness standards, K-12 learning progressions developed
• Multiple rounds of feedback from states, teachers, researchers, higher education, and the general public
• Final Common Core State Standards released on June 2, 2010
• North Dakota adopted the Common Core State Standards in June, 2011
• Aligns with college and work expectations
• Includes rigorous content
• Applies higher-order thinking skills
• Builds upon strengths of current state standards
• Prepares students for success in a global society
• Draws on evidence and research
• Consistency across states
• Teacher collaboration
• Focused professional development
• Opportunities to evaluate student achievement and policies across states

How to read the grade level standards Standards define what students should understand and be able to do.
Clusters are groups of related standards. Note that standards from different clusters may sometimes be closely related, because mathematics is a connected subject.
Domains are larger groups of related standards. Standards from different domains may sometimes be closely related.
Domain: Counting and Cardinality
Cluster: Know number names and the count sequence.
Code Standard Annotation
K.CC.1 Count to 100 by ones and by tens. Pennies and dimes may be used to model ones and tens (ND)
K.CC.2 Count forward beginning from a given number within the known sequence (instead of having to begin at 1).
Number range for this skill should be up to 100. (CCSS)
Example: Student is given a number within the range of 0 to 100. For example, use 56. Student must count forward in sequence from that number. “56, 57, 58, 59” on so on. (ND)

1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
4. Model with mathematics.
5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
6. Attend to precision.
7. Look for and make use of structure.
8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
North Dakota will begin assessments based on the ND Common Core State Standards during the 2014-
2015 school year
