• An interoperability specification for

developing, packaging and distributing

digital learning content in a single format –

REDUCING (RE)DEVELOPMENT COST

AND CONTENT CONVERSION RISK

• Distills the latest and best community

practices for mashing digital content for

delivery in learning platforms.

• Enables functional mash-ups among rich learning applications and learning platforms, creating seamless online learning environments

• Reduces development costs for learning application providers (vendor, institution) by reducing need for custom integrations - clearly defined interface among the LMS and learning application

What is Common Cartridge

• Based on 10 years experience and the most widely used interoperability standards for learning content and assessment:• Metadata

• ISO 15836:2003: Dublin Core Metadata Element Set (mapped to the corresponding elements in LOM)

• IEEE 1484.12.1-2002: Learning Object Metadata • IEEE 1484.12.3-2005: LOM Schema binding (loose

binding) • Content

• IMS Content Packaging v1.2• IMS Question & Test Interoperability (QTI) v1.2.1

What is Common Cartridge (cont’d)• Supports the predominant educational and training

paradigm: self-directed but guided learning with an instructor in the loop, coordinated with assessment and online communal learning (discussions).

• Enables mapping to things we use and understand: textbooks, lesson plans, courses, quizzes, discussion topics.

• Supported by the leading educational publishers, assessment organizations, and learning platform providers and leading open source/open content initiatives.

• Easy to implement and flexible. Content dynamic in structure and delivery.

Engaging open source, creating standards, engaging proprietary vendors, evangelizing ideas, doing demos, all are important activities...

But if we want to have have real impact, the long-term goal must be to empower teachers and learners as to how they select, use and expand technology to help themselves teach and learn...

Compliance Program

• Membership in the Common Cartridge Alliance is the only way to achieve official conformance to the CC.

• Digital content or learning platforms must exhibit the marks shown here, signifying achievement of the official conformance process, to be compliant to IMS CC.

• Products without this mark are not considered to be compliant by IMS GLC.

27

Measuring Compliance

• Self-test, not 3rd party certification• Test method:

• Cartridges – automated test tool• Platforms – test data sets of valid/known error

cartridges

• Conformance levels for platforms• CC compliant – supports all CC features

Web Content Resources

• Any kind of file

• Don’t require processing on import, unlike, say, discussion

topic XML files.

• Two scopes: cartridge (shared) and learning application

object (associated with one and only one)

• Cartridge path structure should be preserved so relative

references continue to work.

• Optional intended use of ‘Lesson Plan’ or ‘Syllabus’.

that can be associated with all of them (type, feedback /

hints / solutions permitted, time limit, late submissions

allowed, maximum # of attempts)

• Question Bank: an unordered set of questions. Note,

only one question bank per cartridge.
