CURRENT SITUATION

The current library is 30 years old. Student study space could be improved with

additional collaborative environments; Learning Commons

Over the last 10 years, Library collection expenditures has changed from 100% print to 80% electronic investments.

Service Desk Information Transactions increased 17% between 2003 and 2006.

The existing 4th and 5th floor of the Library Building provides the best option for limited / phased investment.

The library must have a roadmap for the future.

Library Design and Space Planning

Exploring ways in which Duquesne’s Gumberg Library is changing from printed materials to “a full range of scholarly activity.”

Students use the library for collaborative learning and research. The Gumberg library is:

• Centrally located• Largest seating for study on

campus• Open extra hours• Hub of the wheel

When the library was built adding the 4th and 5th floor the main focus was to increase print holdings and improve materials management.

Findings: Visual Scan• During our work sessions, tour and visual scan of the

Gumberg Library facility, each area was rated for its strengths and weaknesses.

• Participants graded the existing library’s flexibility, access and seating capacity at a B- . – Entrance on the 4th floor – C– Open computers on the 4th floor – B– Student Seating on the 5th floor – C+– EZ borrower Office – D– Circulation Workroom - D

• This clearly demonstrated a need to redesign components within the library. – The entrance and service points on the 4th floor.

Student seating and staff offices on 5th floor.

Improve research seating and collaborative / group areas.

Improve and enhance electronic access capabilities.

Satisfy student demand for study space in the library.

Improve the relationship between the library and faculty/researcher.

Increase the usage and the return on investment of electronic/scholarly resources.

Increase the quality of education for accreditation: “In the Learning Commons,

students will find electronic and print information resources, along with reference librarians to provide research consultation and assistance.” M. Gorman, 2006 President of

ALA, Dean of Library Services California State Fresno.

– Provide options for future delivery of services for 4th and 5th floors• Discuss existing and future service delivery. • Dialogs about existing conditions, ideas for future library space. • Ready access to educational materials including graduate studies• Increased usage of library space

– Improve the educational center of Duquesne University• Improved study spaces in terms of seating, programming and interactive

collaborative spaces. – New Entrance

• Improved areas for popular materials• Increased access for students: Improve extended hours study.

– Learning Commons• Greater access to extra help• More efficient space for project research

• Integration of the digital medium with the printed book.• More display space for popular materials.• More efficient use of space for users, staff, and collections.• Provide options for phased approach with limited funding.• Incorporate green design elements
