Sizing for BW Front-end

Query results from different frontend processors:

If enough physical memory is available and the query returns a small to medium sized result set, the refresh time will be similar even if the processor speed varies greatly from low to high.

Planning the BW Installation

Rough estimate of BW installation time:

Pre Installation Planning 0.5 day

BW Installation 1.0 day

R/3 Plug-In Installation 0.5 day

ITS installation 0.5 day

Post Installation tasks 1.0 day

Other Project Work 0.5 day

Additional System Admin Work ?

BW Pre-Installation: Disk Configuration and Layout

Example BW Disk Configuration using RAID 1 and RAID5:

Operation System -

RAID1

DB, SAP SWAP - RAID1

Redo Logs - RAID1

Mirrored Redo Logs -

RAID1

PSAPTEMP - RAID 1

SAPDATA - RAID5

BW is a READ based system rather than an UPDATE based system.

RAID 5 generally provides better READ performance than RAID 1.

BW Installation Sequence: Same as R/3

Install the database software

The actual database schema will be created during R3SETUP

Check database filesystem after installing DB software

Many subdirectories should exist

Install online documentation

(provided on kernel CD, along with instructions for setup)

Install R3SETUP

Run R3SETUP

Check environment variables

Creates the database <SID>

Use logs for troubleshooting

Check services, SAP filesystems

Perform post-installation tasks

SAP AG 1999

BW Post-installation steps: Part 1

Install BW front-end, including SAPGUI

Create a user with the right Permissions

Perform basic installation checks

Maintain operating system code page (table TCPDB)

Check language import; import additional languages

Apply latest SPAM Update

Apply all relevant Support Packages

Copy client 000 to create the BW client

Create logical system, assign to new client

SAP AG 1999

BW Post-installation steps: Part 2

Install online help

Generate objects using transaction SGEN

Initialize and check Transport Management System

Obtain and install the SAP License

Schedule database statistics collection

Maintain data transfer control parameters

Configure OSS connection

Configure System Administration Assistant

Perform basic parameter tuning

SAP AG 1999

BW Installation: Post-installation Checks

Perform initial installation check

Transactions: SICK or SM28

Address any configuration issues that may arise

Analyze system log during startup

Transaction SM21

Look for errors or warnings, address as encountered

Support Package Types

Types of support packages and patches relevant for BW:

SPAM updates

Basis Support Packages

Application Interface Support Packages

BW Support Packages

Add-on Support Packages - for PlugIns

Front-end Patches

Kernel Patches

SAP AG 1999

BW Post-Installation: Support Packages

Important: apply the Support Packages in the following order following installation:

BW Installation: Online help - Same as R/3

SAP AG 1999

Online Help Installation: Front-end PC Requirement

Maintain file SAPDOCCD.ini

Located in Windows directory of end-user’s front-end PC.

Maps help for each system and provides a default.

Different SAP systems in a system landscape may have specific help versions associated and installed in different locations.

Example entries for file SAPDOCCD.ini:HelpType=HtmlHelpFile[SystemId-BWB]HelpType=HtmlHelpFileHtmlHelpFilePath-EN=\\<hostname>\sapmnt\help\helpdata\EN

Same as R/3

SAP AG 1999

BW Setup: Maintain Data Transfer Parameters

Maintain entries in customizing table RSADMINC

Packet Size is in KB and determines the size of Idoc data packages of data loads from flat file data sources and data loads from BAPIs. A setting of 20000 is the standard recommendation.

FrequencyStatus-IDOC is a ratio. The setting determines the frequency that status Idocs are sent.
