COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVES

Eg: big

A desktop computer is bigger than

a laptop.

COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVES

Eg: light

A laptop computer is lighter than a

desktop.

COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVES

Eg: expensive

A laptop computer is more

expensive than a desktop.

COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVES

Eg: powerful

A desktop computer is more

powerful than a laptop.

COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVES If the adjective has 1 syllable, we add

–er.

eg: big bigger fast faster old older

COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVES If the adjective has 2 or more

syllables, we usually use “more + adjective”

eg: powerful more powerful expensive more expensive handsome more handsome

COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVES If a 2 syllable adjective ends in y, we use “+ier”

eg: friendly friendlier happy happier easy easier

COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVES Other words are irregular

eg: good better badworse

COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVES For multi-word adjectives, we use “more”.

Eg: up to datemore up to date user friendlymore user friendly

Notice… friendlyfriendlier

COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVES We have to remember to use the verb “be”

Eg: The laptop is lighter than the desktop.

We have to remember to use “than”

Eg: The laptop is more expensive than the desktop.

Never use “er” and “more”

Eg: The laptop is more lighter than the desktop. (X)

1. cell phones / computers / cheapCell phones are cheaper than computers.

2. a digital camera / a cell phone / usefulA cell phone is more useful than a digital camera.

3. A USB / a laptop / compactA USB is more compact than a laptop
