Pros= efficient! This leads to competitive prices

Cons= land can become unusable and things such as soil erosion is increased (from increased production).

Increased co2 emissions from transportation

Over depletion of resources (from greater demands)

Supertanker spills = bad (Exxon Valdez)

Because of our physical geography, we cannot grow everything here. This leaves a surplus of some resources in one country and a shortage in others.

Prices reflect supply and demand. This determines where resources are sent

No taxes or trading barriers such as quotas between the countries that are trading

Allows faster and more business between those countries (benefiting them).

Economists that wanted free trade thought this was the reason why certain places flourished economically (had lots of money).

Promoted peace (because countries were less likely to fight with each other if they traded with each other)

The point of this debates is to get you to practice your critical thinking skills

Each debate will involve 2 teams of students (1’s are for Free Trade and 2’s are for Fair Trade)

Even though you are given a trade which you might not agree with, you must use your critical thinking skills to come up with an argument anyway

Talk to your group (people with the same number) and use your article to finish your chart

You will have time to share your own opinion later in the class

At first, all the 1’s will talk about their trade (Free Trade) and all the 2’s will talk about their trade (Fair Trade)

This will allow each side to come up with an argument which they will present to the other members of the group

You will have time to each take turns stating your case, and why your trade is better
