May I feed wild birds on Shabbat Shirah (February 8th)?
There is an old custom of leaving grain or bread for birds on Shabbat Shirah, the Shabbat when we read Parshat Besha-
lach in shul. The custom is linked to the parshah; some suggest it is a reward for the birds’ song of praise for G-d at
the Sea, while others link it to a midrash that birds ate up decoy manna spread by Datan and Aviram on Shabbat.
Some modify this custom, insisting that the birdfood be left out before Shabbat. This is because the sages forbid feeding wild animals on Shabbat (1) because there may be strain in-
volved and (2) because one might forget the laws of Shabbat and trap these creatures. On Shabbat, one may only feed
animals which depend on us for food.
Other authorities defend the practice of putting out food on the day of Shabbat Shirah, arguing that there is no strain
involved and that the birds are beyond our reach for trap-ping when the food is placed outside. Further, we are not really doing this for the birds' sake, but for the sake of our
own custom.

SHORT VORT ON PARSHAS BO BY: THE RAV
So many of our rabbis describe the Torah as being like a bright beacon of guidance amidst a world filled with darkness and confusion. This may be why the very first mitzvah is related to the sanctification of the New Moon. The moon is the brightest luminary in a dark sky. It’s a metaphor for the ideal that is being communicated to Klal Yisrael: You are living in a world of darkness and obscurity. Without a beacon to shine a path for you, you won’t be able to find the proper path. These mitzvos I am giving you may seem at times cum-bersome, they may even seem to be counterproductive to finding that life of virtue. But understand this: when you’re in the dark, you sometimes think that a shadow is a friend when it’s really a foe, that something which looks good is really quite bad, and vice-versa. Therefore, follow the beacon that I’m shining for you. To extend the analogy of the night sky, Hashem was also communicating to us at the very outset that there are other lights out there that accompany the moon beacon. There are points of light, millions of stars, throughout the uni-verse. These represent the universal truths that so many nations espouse. Jews don’t have a monopoly on goodness, and you’ll always be able to find truth and virtue in other cultures as well. But without the moon, you still won’t be able to find your way. The dark sky will be filled with millions of tiny dots of light, but none of them will be providing you with sufficient light to guide your path properly. You will still always need the moon – the Torah – if you wish to find your way.
If you have children or grandchildren currently serving in the IDF please email avital@bayt.ca and we will add them to a list to be kept in mind dur-
ing davening. Please send in their Hebrew name and the mother's He-brew name. Thank You .
