The prediction of Coping Styles Through Parental Styles Among School Students In Oman

Abstract: The study aims to investigate parenting styles and their relationship with positive and negative coping styles among Omani
students. The Descriptive Design was used. The study sample consisted of 2082 males and females (grades 7,8,11,12) who were chosen
randomly from all Omani school districts. The study used Buri Scale of parenting styles after adapting it to Omani culture and it consisted of
three styles: authoritarian, authoritative and permissive styles. The researchers also used a coping scale prepared by Alhashmi (2010) which
consisted of two dimensions: positive coping and negative coping. The study revealed statistical differences in positive and negative coping
and parenting styles attributed to gender and grade. The result also showed the authoritative style is the strongest predictor of positive and
negative coping.
