21st Jan – Sessions 3 & 4

- Gas grid projects in the UK and Sweden- Transport fuels for the future- Biorefinery of the future- Study tours

The GoBiGas Project - from biomass to biogas

Seminar at Chalmers University of TechnologyJan 2010

Åsa Burman Managing Director/Project Manager GoBiGas

Short term target 2020 for Gothenburg > 1 TWh of Bio-SNG

Short term target 2020 for Sweden > 10 TWh of Bio-SNG

Long term target 2050 – only renewable energy sources

Our vision: Only renewable gas in the future

“Green gas concept”• A huge market potential is opened for biogas• The reliability of the biogas supply improves

GoBiGas – Gothenburg Biomass Gasification Project• Commercial scale

• 100 MW Bio-SNG• Operating period 8000 hr/yr • 80 MNm3/yr or 800 GWh/yr

• Gasification of forest residues

• Production of Bio-SNG for distribution in the existing gas grid. Plant situated in the harbor of Gothenburg, fuel transport by ship or by train

• Joint project Göteborg Energi and E.ON

GoBiGas – step by step

• Performance goals: • Biomass to gas – 65 - 70% • Energy efficiency - >90%

• Phase 1: – 20 MW generating 160 GWh/year in

operation 2012– Allothermal (in-direct) gasification– 2000 Nm3/hr or 16 MNm3/yr (equal to

15 000 vehicles/year)

• Phase 2: – 80 MW generating 640 GWh/year in

operation 2015/2016– Technology not yet chosen– 8000 Nm3/hr or 64 MNm3/yr (equal to

60 000 vehicles/year)

Reference plant: Gasification and Methanation in Güssing, Austria

• Gasification in fluidized bed with separate combustion zone (in-direct, allothermal gasification)

• 8 MW biofuel• Gas engine 2 MWe and 4,5 MWth to

local district heating system• Operating time 2009 > 42 000 hours

• Demonstration plant for methanation and gas cleaning

• 1 MW Bio-SNG, up-scaling from 10 kW• Test programme run in cooperation with

GoBiGas Oct 2009 – dec 2009, with operators from Göteborg Energi and E.ON

GoBiGas – phase 1

Existing hot water boilers, fired with wood pellets

Project status - January 2009• State funding

– 25 % of project cost, 222 MSEK granted from the Swedish Energy Agency! Provided that EU approves the funding.

• Gasification– Cooperation between Metso Power and Repotec, Basic Engineering being carried out

• Methanation– Evaluation of technology => Basic Engineering with chosen supplier to be started in February

• Ground work and civil engineering– Engineering and preparation for start of work at site June, 2010

• Permits– Applications for environmental permits and building permits for Phase 1 and Phase 2
