+Colored Pencil Techniques

+Remember…

Colored pencils are NOT used like crayons!

You should use your colored pencil as if you are painting with a pencil.

- Start by “Blocking In” your “Local Colors”

- Slowly use the techniques you’ve learned from drawing to build up your values.

- Think of lights and darks, shape

and form, and creating detail.

+Materials: Colored Pencils and…

Illustration board :

High quality drawing paper on a stiff backing.

Can range from smooth to rough surfaces.

Much more stable than paper

+Your Photo Reference Must Be…

ORIGINAL – taken by you, or someone you know and used with their permission.

COLORFUL – the more colorful the easier it will be.

INTERESTING – both the subject matter and composition must be interesting.

+Your Photo Reference Must NOT Be…

Anything man-made (buildings, bridges, etc.)

Vast and expansive (landscapes, etc.)

Of humans or pets (they are extremely difficult to do!)
