Grouping Symbols

Grouping symbols…

Too much fun…

– ALGEBRA I – UNIT 1 – Section 1

Grouping Symbols

In this section, we will be looking more closely at…

• order of operations

• grouping symbols

• simplifying• evaluating

And we’ll be reviewing…

GROUPING SYMBOLS

A grouping symbol is used to enclose an expression in order to indicate that that part

of the problem should be done first.

Common examples of grouping symbols are…

In addition to doing the job of grouping expressions, these symbols also indicate multiplication if numbers/variables are side-by-side.

What are grouping symbols?

GROUPING SYMBOLS

A grouping symbol is used to enclose an expression in order to indicate that that part

of the problem should be done first.

Many other symbols also act as grouping symbols, but the operation they stand for are the first things that people think of. For example…

OTHER SYMBOLS

MULTIPLICATION

We’re going to take the chance to review some other symbols

that are commonly used.

We’ll play a quick game to review…

Where’s Mr. Dillon? On the next slide, decide which four symbols indicate multiplication. Then,

advance the slide show to see if you are correct…

DIVISION

Nice work. Let’s try again… Only this time let’s look at

symbols for…

ORDER OF OPERATIONSHow do grouping symbols fit

into order of operations?

Let’s edit our current list…

ORDER OF OPERATIONSThe steps in order of operations are:

1) Parentheses (Grouping Symbols)

2) Exponents/Roots3) Multiply/Divide (Left to Right)

4) Add/Subtract (Left to Right)

• If you are working inside of grouping symbols, follow the remaining steps in order of operations in order.

• If there are grouping symbols inside of other grouping symbols, do the innermost ones first.

sure to show your work!
