Justice & Solidarity:Advocacy

What is Advocacy?Actions and processes which seek to influence other people, often people in powerful positions

Aims to bring about change to things like laws, policies and allocation of resources that affect people’s lives

Can be: single-issue, time-limited campaign (eg Earth Hour) orOngoing work undertaken around a range of issues (eg GetUp)

What is Advocacy?

?

Advocacy in a Catholic, Edmund Rice contextNot taking political sidesApproaching issue from the perspective of Catholic Social Teachings, Church standpoint, Christian Brothers’ stance, aligned to the Charter

Looking to engage our young people in amplifying the voices of people whose voices are not being heard due to poverty, oppression, exclusion, marginalization

Looking for students to use their skills and passion for a worthwhile cause

Speak out for those who cannot speak…Speak out, judge fairly, defend the rights of the poor and needy. Proverbs 31:8-9

Our schools exist to challenge popular beliefs and dominant cultural values, to ask the difficult question, to look at life from the standpoint of the minority, the victim, the outcast, the stranger.

The call to become involved in advocacy is something that is new to many of us.  It may also be something that we may feel unqualified for or that is better left to those given particular responsibility in this area - however it is something that can involve us all.
