eme newsMTV 2011 VMAs: Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Adele big winners

Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and Adele all won multiple Moon Men at the MTV 2011 Video Music Awards. Perry’s “Firework” won for Video of the Year, and she also took home a trophy with Kanye West for Best Collaboration for their sci-fi fantasia “E.T.” Perry harkened back to a previous VMAs show in her acceptance speech when she told her co-winner, “Now this is the time when you want to interrupt me, Kanye!”

Lady Gaga — who spent the entire night dressed as her male alter ego, Jo Cal-derone — won Best Female and Best Video with a Message. Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep,” meanwhile, took home multiple behind-the-scenes awards for edi-ting, art direction, and cinematography.

Other winners included Britney Spears (who also took home the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award), Nicki Minaj, Justin Bieber, Foo Fighters, and Tyler, The Creator. Check out a full list below:

October 18th Rotterdam - Several years it has been since Rock ‘n Roll legend has been in Holland. But if we have to believe him is Holland one of his favorite locations. “You guys were the rst ones who really appreciated my music, bless you so much”. By that he means that “Let Love Rule” was a big hit in Amsterdam. “You guys always liked strange music”. That was his way to thank all the Dutch fans whom liked the rst album by a Jewish – African American(his own words).

But the actual reasons he is coming back to Holland is his new album Black & White America. Which contains a lot of funky rock songs. Which made him popular in the rst way. And that it is going to be a rocking night is shown by the rst song Come on Get it. He makes it look like it’s a teaser for the complete audience to make it a great night.

But however Come on Get it is a new track from the latest album, it is going to be a night with all of his legendary hits. In a good tempo all of his greatest hits are coming by. In order of appearance : Always on the Run, Are You Gonna Go My Way and Mr Cab Driver are making the audience insane as the beginning tunes of the latest singles Stand are running thru Ahoy. He is loving Rotterdam and it is being returned with a loud applause and singing along.

All of his hits are coming by with tracks like It Ain’t Over Till It’s Over, American Woman, Rock and Roll is Dead and Believe. But with a good variety of new songs. Like a new intro version of the song Black & White America and the rocking Rock Star City Life.

After a good 75 minutes he is leaving the stage. The whole audience is shouting the name of Lenny Kravitz to comeback.

But when the encore begins that is when the best part of the show begins. After a acoustic version of I Belong To You, he is thanking the audience and Holland. He tells them he loves them and he will never forget his rst gig in Holland in the Paradiso. That is when he knew that Let Love Rule was his biggest hit ever.

After is little story the band starts to play Let Love Rule. A fteen minute long Let Love Rule makes it clear. Lenny Kravitz is a pioneer of rock music who has still got it.

In the beginning of movies in cinemas there were only “silent movies”. In that cinemas there were live music during the film was played. A man with a piano was playing the music what belongs to the right pieces of movie, hard to imagine nowadays. In the 20's there was the first use of an audio track in a movie. Because the audio track was synchronized with the film, the musician in the cinema was no longer needed. A Later time they also made tracks with orchestras and the music became more popular. Over the years they experiment more and more and in the 60’s and 70’s there was for the first time a certain atmosp-here created by music in scenes. At the time the Beatles became popular it became normal to use pop music in movies. And therefore, other pop musi-cians were asked to write music for films.

One of the most famous and impor-tant composer in the film industry is John Williams who was born in Flu-shing, Queens in New York on February 8, 1932. In the beginning he was known of the music he made for almost every Spielberg film. The same Spielberg recommended George Lucas, writer of the Star Wars episodes, to use the talent of Williams for his movies. With that music he was awar-ded for an Oscar and three Grammy Awards.

A list of famous movies where he made music for:JawsStar WarsSupermanIndiana JonesE.T. the Extra-TerrestrialSchindler's ListSaving Private RyanCatch Me If You CanHarry PotterThe Terminal

What makes music good music for a particular movie? There is so much nice movie music made in the past, but what actually makes it that good? Sales could be the criterion but in that case it is maybe more about the movie itself instead of the music. It is much better to look how the music works in the movie. Is it just a melody and a beat or fits it perfectly at the scene? Good music plays the role of the secret nar-rator. Better than which actor what-soever is music a creator of exciting. It’s not just a part of all but it’s also used for deception. Think about the low tone in a scene with water. The audience expects immediately danger because there is a shark coming right down to the actor. Another important thing is the con-stant returning of the music like a thread through the film. The music should stay in your mind after wat-ching the movie.

Music and movies

Page 7: Amp Magazine

A few examples of famous music in movies:

Pirates of the CaribbeanThe movie is based on the attractions in the Disney parks and is worldwide very popular. Critics were skeptical about the movie because the previ-ous pirate movies were a flop. Howe-ver, the film was a huge success. Everyone knows the music of this movie composed by Kluas Badelt who is born in Frankfurt, Germany. And if you don’t know his version you should know the remix of DJ Tiesto (He’s a pirate). The best things about the music are that it is very recogni-zable and the sword fights are subtly incorporated in the movie. The music supports the picture perfectly.

American BeautyThis classic drama is about a family that split up. Composer Thomas Newman is known of his unique and experimental style which he creates a weird atmosphere. He combines the real instruments with electronic sounds en is also famous because of is special rhythms. He is an example for many other composers because he dares to renew the music. There are a lot popular DJ’s/producers who used the samples of his piece of music.

James Bond ThemeJohn Barry is still one of the most important en most talented compo-ser in the world. The first version of the music, with the familiar tune was of another composer called Monty Norman, but John Barry have worked it out into the full composition we all know these days. There are many professional and amateur harmonies

all over the world that perform his version and the theme is used in all eleven editions of the James Bond movies.

Pop artistIn the past there are many pop bands who made the soundtrack for movies. Sometimes successfully and sometimes unsuccessfully. “ The Gra-duate” is a good example in this case. Almost every music they used in the movie is made by the famous duo Simon and Garfunkel. But before the movie was published they were not that popular. Nowadays every-one is singing along with the hits like “Mrs. Robinson”. Have you ever ask yourself about whom they sing? Well, Mrs. Robinson is a character in that movie. Much later the movie “Europ-trip” was released. A funny movie about some people who travel through Europe. All from an Ameri-can point of view, because they live there. In that movie the antagonist (Matt Damon) has a performance at a high school party. That original song (scotty Doesn’t know) became a big hit in entire America. Yet another proof that a movie can give a track a huge boost. It looks like music en movies sometimes need each other to become successful.

I’m writing this article following a 15 minute youtube movie wherein Michael Masnick, a well known blogger explains how Trent Reznor, frontman of rockband Nine Inch Nails represents the future of the modern music business. This movie was a real eye-opener for me and I would like to share this information with you. Trent Reznors ideas of how to make money in the music industry are denetly uncon-ventional. Which doesn’t mean they don’t work, on the contrary, they are very succes-sful.

It started about four years ago, when Nine Inch Nails was signed to a mayor record label and put out a new album. With this new album, Trent Reznor tried out a new business model to make money out of this album. The business model seemed very easy: Connecting with Fans + Reason to Buy = Succes. Seems pretty standard to me, but the way Nine Inch Nails used it, is quite unconventional. First of all, they sold t-shirts with things written on the back of it. Some letters were highlighted, and all the letters together formed a senctnce. Fans, smart enough, put .com at the end of the sen-tence in their internet browser and found a secret website with information and music of the band. This was a great way to go beyond the music and connect with their fans.

Nine Inch Nails would also leave USB-sticks behind in the toilets of th venues they were playing. These USB sticks contained new and unreleased material of the band. Ofcourse fans shared this music and the story of the found USB stick on the internet, which got the fans excited and engaged to

the band.

Ofcourse, the record label didn’t like this, and the contract between Nine Inch Nails and the record label was ended. So NIN continued without a record label. So for the new album, NIN gave the fans dierent options in getting their new music. First of all, there were 9 of the original 36 tracks downloadable for free. The second option were al 36 tracks, downloadable for just 5 dollarsm which ofcourse is very cheap. The third option was a 2CD package, with al the music and a booklet for just 10 dollars, a bargain. Now these things aren’t brilliant ofcourse, but the next part really is. For 57 dollars, fans could get a deluxe edition, with CD’s, a book and some other stu. And last but not least, the hardcore Nine Inch Nails fans could buy a 300 dollar, a ultra deluxe limited edition package , signed by Trent Reznor itself with even more special stu.

This package was sold out in 30 hours, with a revenues of 750.000 dollars. In 30 hours. All the options together brought in 1,6 million dollars. 1,6 million dollars for music fans could also get for free, since the music was sold under a creative commons agree-ment which gave fans the ability to upload and download the music legally. So this is exactly what Trent Reznor means with “Con-nect with Fans + Reason to Buy = Succes”.

Page 9: Amp Magazine

Only two month later, a new album got out. Like the previous album is was downloada-ble for free. And the downloads were not just crappy MP3’s but high quality and loss-less downloads. Ofcourse with this album also came the ability to buy the deluxe and limited editions. Together with the online release of the album, Nine Inch Nails also released the concert agenda, so fans could listen to the music, check out the date and an venue near them and immediately buy tickets for these shows. So because of the mutual release the music gave a reason to buy the tickets. And ofcourse it doesn’t stop here. On the website of the band are a lot of examples of Connecting with Fans and Reason to Buy. For example, the website aggregates all the

ickr photo’s and youtube movies from live performances and puts it on the website. Nine inch nails also encourages fans to make remixes of their music. They want they to remix, share and rate. This is another great example of Connecting With Fans. Other Examples are contests, held on the website. Coördinates are given, and on the place that matches with these coordinates fans will nd tickets for Nine Inch Nails shows. And more recently, Nine Inch Nails put 450GB of raw live video footage online, encouraging fans to make nice movies out of it. Great examples of Connecting with Fans, and yet other reasons why this business model of Trent Reznor is so successful.

Diana Ross, Lionel Richie, Andrea Bocelli, Elvis Costello and K’s Choise. Just a few names that perform with Guido’s Orchestra. Not bad for a orchestra that plays also classic music. This is a good example about how classic and pop music can be a superb combination!

It was 1998 when Guido Dieteren, fiddler and front man of the orches-tra, asked his friend and pianist Falco Borsboom to compose a new orches-tra production: Guido’s Orchestra. Only one year later they already per-form with Elvis Costello, K’s Choise, Roland Gift and Toni Braxton in a totally sold out Ahoy in Rotterdam. In 2003 they came out with their first album. It became a huge success. After that there where shows with artists as Alessandro Safina and the Dutch performers Trijntje Oosterhuis and Marco Borsato. In 2006 the big-gest success came and is still going on: Guido’s Orchestra is every year playing Symphonica in Rosso with some of the biggest artist from this moment: Lionel Richie and Andrea Bocelli.

The influence of Wendy KokkelkorenWhat is the main difference between Guido’s Orchestra and other orchestra’s? Guido’s Orchestra can play pop and classic perfectly toge-ther. One of the main reasons is Wendy Kokkelkoren. She is Guido’s wife and she is soprano singer in the orchestra. Kokkelkoren finished her

study on the Maastricht Academy of Music. She performed in many con-certs and musicals. She had an important role in the musical The West Side Story.

Wendy and Guido met each other in 2001. Guido was impressed by the quality of Wendy’s voice. She became part of Guido’s Orchestra. Five years later they got married in the Pancratiuschurch in Heerlen. Wendy created her own cd with a combo of Guido’s Orchestra. The cd was called Feelings and became a huge success.

Helping the regionGuido Dieteren and Wendy Kokkelko-ren are people who wants to help people and charities if they can. Wendy donated a part of the pro-ceeds of her solo album to the Pangratiuschurch in Heerlen. For her it is important to do something to help other people or charities. She had chosen this church because of her married with Guido, that toke place there.

Guido is a patron off music educa-tion. Research shows out that child-ren gets smarter and better develo-ped when they having music educa-tion. That is the reason why Guido always invite children to their shows for free. That for him a way to do something for young people.

when a classical orchestrabecomes a pop ochestra

Page 11: Amp Magazine

Successful in Rosso

Since 2006 Guido’s Orchestra is the house orchestra off Symphonica in Rosso. Each year a few shows are given in Arnhem’s Gelredome for thousands of people. Guido’s Orchestra is every year present, the other artist change every year. That’s how Guido’s Orchestra has already such an impressive résumé. By this success Guido’s Orchestra plays for sold out stages through whole Hol-

land and also getting grip in other countries as Belgium and Germany.

The quality off Guido Dieteren, the superb classic voice of Wendy Kok-kelkoren and the skills and versatility of the orchestra make that Guido’s Orchestra is a big success. Guido and Wendy proved together with the orchestra that pop and classic har-monious agree.

Visitors, government and festivals themselves increasingly criticize the fact of how festivals are in the pursuit of quality entertainment, without taking into account the environment. Research by the Utrecht University shows that corporate social responsi-bility (CSR) has real opportunities for festivals. Lowlands, which takes place next August, is already aware.

Where festivals at a social level ensure an important contribution to culture and entertainment, a lot is to be improved on ecological terrain. In a short time, a large amount of waste is produced, the power con-sumption is high and the logistics organization is accompanied by intensive environmental transport impact. The festival industry faces the question of how to better deal with the environment and is in pursuit of extending knowledge and best prac-tices in CSR.

Joos Buizer, researcher at Utrecht University: "In addition to the results obtained to protect the environ-ment, it can be difficult to imitate the CSR competitive advantages, as a

positive image and lasting relation-ships with cooperating parties are being built. Increasing interest in CSR may generate extra publicity and a festival may attract more sponsors. "CSR also provides internal benefits. Buizer's research shows that CSR is also developing entrepreneurship that can promote festivals, leading to greater efficiency, innovation and better investment for the longer term. Above mentioned chances of CSR, however, are not being used by all the festivals. "There is so much to gain in CSR," said Buizer.

Lowlands director Eric Eerdenburg indicates that the main reason to be active in CSR consists of a ideologi-cal nature. Buizer's research shows that the festival organizers use this as a main argument. Furthermore, it’s becoming more and more important for festivals to show what they are doing in terms of CSR, because the social norm in this area is shifting. A number of festivals expect that the government will be demanding a lot more from festivals before they can obtain a license. It is better to be innovative than having to follow the rules. Besides Lowlands, which decla-red two of the seven campsites to be 'green' and has said to be using a hydrogen generator for clean energy, other festival have started walking the green path. During the Oerol festival, wind turbines were at the festival site where you could recharge your cell phone and ‘The Parade’ uses hard plastic bottles, which, in production and transport, produce less CO2.By Toon v. In this section Bart Becx tells all about the records that inspired him in his life. From Metal till poppy rock songs. Bart tells all about his favorite records and cd’s!

1. Incubus – A Crow Left Of The Murder(2004)Incubus, the band with many genres. From the first album Fungus Amongus(1995, Funk) until the last one If Not Now, When?(2011, Rock, ballads) they have been one of the most innovating bands of the last 15 years. With the release ‘A Crow Left Of The Murder’ they have got the best releases. This is an album that keeps you interested from the first minute till the last beats. All sorts of genres are passing by. With rockers like ‘Megalomaniac’ and ‘Priceless’ or the more mysterious ballad songs like ‘Here in my Room’ and ‘Southern Girl’ it can be in the record collection for Rockers and Love Song lovers. Especially the instrumental part in the track ‘Sick, Sad, Little World’ is out of this world.Highlights: Sick, sad, little world & Beware! Criminal 2. Deftones – White Pony(2000)This record was the breakpoint for a lot of fans. After ‘Around the Fur’ what meant the break thru for Defto-nes, many fans were not amused by ‘White Pony’. With the previous album Deftones were marked as the foun-ders of Nu Metal, yet Deftones didn’t like to be name tagged for just one Genre. That is why this is release is one of their darkest and psychedelic releases ever. With tracks like ‘Feitcieira’ they maintain back to

their roots of ‘Adrenaline’ & ‘Around the Fur’. But the slower tracks are giving a whole new era in the music industry. Deftones can’t be tagged as a Nu Metal band, but call them the founders of Nu Metal and the fathers of the alternative Metal scene. But ‘White Pony’ also became a critical point for the existence of Deftones. With fights between frontman Chino Moreno and guitarist Stephen Car-penter they have made the most interesting metal record of 2000. Fun fact ‘White Pony means Cocain’.Highlights: RX Queen(backing vocals Scott Weiland) & Back To School 3. Kings of Leon – Because of the Times(2007)One of the pearls of the first ten years in 2000. The album before the Kings got their earned popularity in the world. Hits that became hits after greatest hits, in short the album before ‘Sex on Fire’ and ‘Use Some-body’. This is the best Kings of Leon album by far. Everything you like or don’t like about them is in this fine piece of history. The early Kings sound are to be found in ‘My Party’ and ‘Camaro’ or you want it to be more like ‘Only by the Night’ listen to tracks like ‘On Call’. It really is a mystery why the media didn’t pick it up before ‘Only by the Night’. This is an album what could be at the top of the lists in 2007. The problem is simply the fact that there are too many people who didn’t listen to it. Absolutely a great way to follow up ‘Youth and Young Manhood’ and ‘Aha Shake Heart-break’.Highlights: Ragoo & Fans

Party Animals

On Monday morning everyone goes to school or is working with the weekend still in mind. You sit behind your desk and you are looking forward to the weekend already. A weekend with friends, beer and music. Your work is a side issue and your boss a jerk. The world consists only of events to you. I would not immediately reject this attitude but it is a bit easy. Look around you and you will see much more. How dreary life would be if there was no nature. Everyone has seen short parts on National Geographic. Sometimes you have to realize how very nice this life is and how we can learn from the animal kingdom. Out that we put ourselves in danger if we don’t maintain the nature. Remember that all over the world parties goes on and think about all the mess people left behind. Actually, we are the party animals of the king-dom and we hunt for a good atmosphere. The only different is we are no vultures that eat dead animals. When we finished our chase, we go home and the festival ground is filled with rubbish like trampled beer glasses and clothes. So think about it next time, think about the possibilities you have in this world en think about other people when you enjoy the music of your favorite artist.
