AS A HAVEN FOR KNOWLEDGE, CULTURE AND SOCIAL LIFE, THIS ART COMPLEX FOCUSES ON COMPLETE IMMERSION INTO THE DIGITAL REALM. SCREENING TECHNIQUES WITHIN AND BETWEEN THE EXHIBITION/PERFORMANCE OF THE WORK AND THE INTERACTIONS THAT ENGAGE THEM CREATE OVERLAP BETWEEN ART, ARTIST AND PUBLIC AND ALLOW FEEDBACK BETWEEN EXHIBITION SPACE AND VIEWER RESPONSE.

ORGANIZED THROUGH A NETWORK OF CONTEXTUAL NODES, THE COMPLEX CURATES A SEQUENCE OF EXPERIENCE THAT WEAVES THROUGH ZONES OF ART DISPLAY: CREATION, EXHIBITION, PERFORMANCE, INTERACTION. AS THESE ELEMENTS COLLIDE AND RESPOND, THE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN THEM ARE CONTROLLED THROUGH SURFACE AND VOLUME PROPERTIES INCLUDING TEXTURE, TRANSPARENCY AND DEPTH.

FLUX BOX ADDRESSES THE ISSUE OF PUBLIC ART IN PHILADELPHIA BY INJECTING ITSELF INTO THE VERY SMALL, LEFTOVER SPACES BETWEEN EXISTING BUILDINGS CREATING A NETWORK OF INDIVIDUAL MOMENTS. DEVIATING FROM THE FORMAL OCCUPATION OF ART IN THIS AND MANY OTHER LOCAL NEIGHBORHOODS, THERE IS A FOCUS ON THE TRANSIENT NATURE OF THE CREATION OF MURAL ARTS. MADE OF LIGHT-WEIGHT MATERIALS AND FULLY REDEPLOYABLE PARTS, THE FLUX BOX MAKES ART OF THE ACT OF CREATING BY PROVIDING SITE SPECIFIC, CONTROLLED VIEWS TO THOSE PASSING BY. THIS IS DONE USING A VARIATION IN TRANSPARENCIES, PERFORATIONS AND HINGED CONNECTIONS IN ALL WALL PANELS ALLOWING THE STRUCTURE TO OPEN UP TO THE SITE.

PUBLIC SPACE IS THE VOID, THE CHASM, THE NOTHING BETWEEN ALL THAT IS PRIVATELY OWNED. BY MAPPING THE VISITORS’ CURRENT COGNITIVE PATH THROUGH LINCOLN CENTER, THE OVERLAPPING AND INTERSECTIONS BETWEEN THEM CAN BE MANIPULATED TO FORM A NEW CONDITION APPROPRIATE TO EACH EVENT TAKING PLACE. MOVEMENT IS THEN CONTROLLED BY RAMPING AS EACH EVENT IS DIRECTED BY VERTICALLY AND HORIZONTALLY DEFINED VOIDS.

TRANSLUCENT MATERIALS INTRODUCE THE QUESTION OF VISIBILITY. AS AREAS OF TRANSPARENCY WERE CONTROLLED, PARTICULAR VIEWS WERE IMPAIRED AND A FEW CLEARINGS WERE LEFT FOR UNOBSTRUCTED SIGHT. ONE HAS CONTROL OF HOW PUBLIC OR PRIVATE THEIR EXPERIENCE WITH THE INSTALLATION BECOMES, AS THE LAYERED MODULES FILTER THE VIEWS AND IN TURN MASK THE IDENTITY OF THE VIEWER.

DENSITY WAS PROVIDED BY THE CLUSTERING OF CLEAR LIDS, WHICH WERE THEN COUPLED WITH A SINGLE OPAQUE LID. THE WHITE LINES OF THIS FORMATION PROVIDE VISIBLE ORIENTATION AND DIRECT ATTENTION TO VARIOUS MODES OF INTERACTION.

REVIEWS ARE OFTEN THE ANTI-CLIMAX TO ANY PROJECT AS A SHORT, IMPERSONAL CRITIQUE TAKES PLACE AND ULTIMATELY THE STUDENT’S FEELINGS OF SUCCESS HINGE ON THE COMMENTS OF A FEW JURORS. MY DESIGN AMBITION IS TO FOCUS THE TRADITIONAL REVIEW BACK TO THE MOST IMPORTANT FUNCTION IT SERVES: PROVIDING A FORUM FOR INTERESTING DISCUSSIONS ABOUT ARCHITECTURE, WHICH ARE SPARKED BY THE PROJECTS COVERING THE WALLS. WITHIN THIS PAVILION, A GRADIENT OF PRIVACY PRESENTS A NARRATIVE FOCUSING THE CRITICS AND STUDENTS INTO A MORE INTIMATE DISCUSSION BY BREAKING UP SPACE INTO SMALLER SECTIONS AND BRINGING STUDENT WORK TO THE CENTER.

AS YOUNG PROFESSIONALS SEARCH FOR HOUSING IN PHILADELPHIA, THERE IS A NEED TO BALANCE THE SOCIAL AND PERSONAL LIFE IN THE RESIDENCE. BY PROVIDING STUDIO DWELLINGS, BUT THEN GROUPING THEM AND INCORPORATING A COMMUNAL LIVING SPACE, THIS PROJECT IS ABLE TO ACHIEVE THAT BALANCE.

PUBLIC GALLERIES, A CAFE AND AN OUTDOOR PLAZA OCCUPY THE GROUND LEVELS AND ACTIVATE THE NEW PATH THAT BRIDGES THE SURROUNDING, CURRENTLY DISCONNECTED NEIGHBORHOODS. THIS MAIN PATH RUNS THROUGH THE BUILDING’S CENTRAL COURTYARDS, AND SECONDARY PATHS THEN FURTHER EXTEND THE MOBILITY TO UPPER, RESIDENTIAL LEVELS THROUGH A NETWORK OF RAMPS.

USING A TIME BASED, GENERATIVE PROCESS, LINES OF FORCE WERE DRAWN TO PROVIDE AN OVERALL SITE STRATEGY FROM WHICH THE INSTITUTE OF GEOLOGY EMERGES. THE VORTEX THAT OCCURS WHEN THESE FORCES COLLIDE PROVIDES A DYNAMIC EXPERIENCE. EXHIBITION AND RESEARCH SPACES ARE DIVIDED INTO 5 INDIVIDUAL TRAJECTORIES BASED ON THE BRANCH OF GEOLOGY EACH IS ASSOCIATED WITH. THE CURATION OF THESE BRANCHES IS ORGANIZED BY SCALE AND TIME (DURATION OF FORMATION), WHICH IS REINFORCED THROUGH A GRADIENT FROM DARK SUBGRADE SPACES TO LIGHT OPEN GALLERIES. A LINEAR, STRIATED LANDSCAPE ALSO DISPLAYS THE PASSING OF TIME THROUGH THE MOVEMENT OF ITS SURFACE AND THE INTERACTION OF THE NEW ISLAND EDGE WITH THE RISE AND FLOW OF THE RIVER.
