[FLEMING, Ian Lancaster] Contributes ‘Foreign news’ to ‘The Kemsley Manual of Journalism’.London, Cassell 1950 [38571 ]

FIRST EDITION. Illustrated Quarto, pp.424 plus advertisements. Elegantly hand-bound in half black oasismorocco leather, spine gilt-lettered in six compartments with raised bands, cloth boards. A finecopy.Ian Fleming’s first appearance in book-form, following a privately distributed ring-bound manual for Kemsleyjournalists. His contribution was a very readable essay (pp.238-246) in which he discusses his department andprovides an insight to the news-gathering techniques of the Foreign service, whilst describing the qualities requiredfor his ‘ideal foreign correspondent’; who must be able to ‘drink with the meanest spy or the most wastrelly spiv, ...be grounded in the history and culture of the territory in which he is serving, ...be intellectually inquisitive, ... able tokeep a secret, ... physically strong, ... fast with a typewriter,... and able to drive a car.’After the war, Lord (later Viscount) Kemsley was quick to take Fleming under his wing by offering him a job as

foreign manager of his Newspaper empire. Throughout their working relationship, Kemsley regarded Fleming as afavoured son and although by no means a senior figure in the organisation, Fleming was the only person in thebuilding who would call Lord and Lady Kemsley by their first names, and frequently saw them socially. Flemingsoon brought the ailing Sunday Times glamour, social cachet and credibility, and in return was given the means andopportunity to pursue his lifestyle with little inconvenience, ultimately leading to the creation of James Bond.£175

FLEMING, Ian Lancaster, (1908-1964). Dr. No. (a James Bond novel)London: Jonathan Cape. 1958 [27627 ]FIRST EDITION. Publisher’s black cloth-effect paper over boards, silver titles to spine, in pictorial dust wrapperdesigned by Pat Marriott. Internally clean and bright, spine with slight lean, jacket discreetly and expertly repairedto extremities. A fine copy, with no inscriptions or price-clipping. This issue with the ‘Dancing Lady’ design on cloth;there are also versions in plain boards. Filmed by Broccolli/Saltzman in 1962, and with a John Barry soundtrack, this was the one that started it all and introduced the world to Sean Connery...Many of the now familiar elements appeared in this first entry of the series: M, Moneypenny, Felix Leiter, Q/MajorBoothroyd, SPECTRE, the Walther PPK, a Casino and a Vodka Martini!
