Chalk and talk with demonstration andboring experiments which seldomly worked, due to old fashioned equipment, leaving theteachers stressed and the students bored andbemused.

Do you remember the measuring tools, theduplicated handout for students, endless andlong hours of homework with tables, calculations, errors estimations, presentationof research and reports ?

Why is Computer-Assisted Experimentation so importanttoday and what made JEULINdevelop a unique competence inthat field over the last 15 years ?

The resulting image for Sciences was :

    - Physics never works,- Chemistry smokes and stinks,- Biology is a dead science.

Then came the first computers to the schools.

A powerful tool, but designed for office-workand not for scientific experimentation. Onlywith special software, interface-systems anddataloggers, PCs and laptops became notonly useful but really essential teaching andlearning tools for science topics in schools.

For more than 15 years JEULIN has beendeveloping special software and hardwarefor science teaching in close cooperation withleading French educationalists and teachers.

The result is the leading position of JEULIN inthe market for these products, which are alsoregarded as the reference and theacknowledged standard by an ever increasingnumber of users, and even the competitors.JEULIN, as the French leader amongst thesuppliers of scientific teaching equipment,

has the strength and the competence nowand in the future to ensure the continuousdevelopment to add to the existingequipments and systems includingintegration of new technologies such as theinternet and intranets in schools.

The equipment for Computer-AssistedExperimentation today and in the futuremust allow the following :

    - Learning by doing, hands-on, self studybased science.

    - Self-paced or teacher-directed scientificexperimentation.

    - Self-motivated scientific investigation bystudents using multimedia-tools allowingdata-collection and analysing in real-time.

    - Plug and Play.

    - Coverage of all essential scientific topics andintegration of ever increasing new fields, such as environmental studies and humanphysiology.

    - Access to the internet and intranet forresearch and diffusion of information.

    - Saving time and money due to efficiency, reliability, shared resources and simplicity ofuse by students and teachers.

The Jeulin Science Studio gathered allsoftware and equipments required for theComputer-Assisted Experimentation :

    Computer-Assisted Experimentation

    Intuitive operation

The difference : a good-sized screenThanks to its size (5 x 5 cm and 128 x 128pixels) the graphics screen of the VTT conso-le permits the display of data as requiredfrom your students with the reproduction ofaxes, quantities, units and scales.

Total program coverA wide range of adapters/sensors coversmost magnitudes which have to be measu-red in the syllabuses of physics/chemistry andlife and earth sciences. This means lessequipment needs to be bought in: tension, intensity, pH, temperature, atmosphericpressure etc. Being upgradeable, the VTTconsole will let you add new applications asyour requirements develop regardingexperiments.

The VTT console ishighly intuitive due toits ergonomic design:you are guided by thebuttons when movingfrom one display modeto another. The VTTconsole thus automatical-ly plots the curve or showsyour measurements in atable.

Automatic detection of sensors The VTT console lets you use 4 sensorssimultaneously. A simple button is all that is needed to movefrom one to the other immediately. The console detects one or more sensorsautomatically as soon as it is switched on.

New options available !Keep a record of the tutorial using the VTTprinter. Just connect to the VTT console, andprintouts are fast and easy. Take advantage of modular solutions whichcater for all educational needs.

    Connected mode

The VTT console can be used toacquire, view and store pointsresulting from experiments. Theresults are displayed as a table, curveor histogram. As the VTT console isportable, you can work outside thetutorial room. Nor does autonomousmode prevent subsequent transferof the data to a PC for display on alarger screen, to interpret themduring class or to print the results.

When linked to a PC via the serialport, the VTT console is a powerfulinterface that offers 4 acquisitionchannels.

A more interactive approach to teaching with the VTT console

    Autonomous mode

Versatile usage of a unit with or without a PC

The VTT console offers two modes of operation :

    Computer-Assisted Experimentation

    Data Workshop software

A similar ergonomic design A wide choice of functions

The Data Workshop software represent anew generation of computer-assisted experiment software which combinespower with simple operation.

The so-called specialized software arespecific to a subject or an experiment.

    There are two types :

those which enable to control some specific apparatuses which are not takeninto account by non-specialized software,

those which propose detailed experiments protocols.

In both cases, the student is guided duringthe experiment.

The so-called non-specialized softwareprovide a range of acquisition and processing tools which can be used to carryout numerous computerized experiments. They offer the user great freedom in puttingtogether his own tutorials with the help ofgeneral functions that are simple to operate.

Whatever the software, the main functionsare as follows :

    Acquisition

Computer-assisted experiments : your tutorial experiments assisted by a PC.

Video Workshop : the scientific video fromA to Z, accessible via a simple webcam.

    Processing

Scientific graphical spreadsheet software :all the power of graphical spreadsheet soft-ware designed for scientific applications.

Calculation and modeling : tailored to yourneeds.

Benefits :Annotation - report - multimedia help.

    Computer-assisted acquisitionusing the console

Advantages Compatible with our consoles : ESAO 4+ and VTT Automatic sensor detection Customization of direct inputs for simplified

usage of measuring instruments with analogoutput

Simple parameterization of acquisition Network function: instantly transfer your

    acquisitions to all connected terminals.

Preparation of Parameterization Data the experiment of the acquisition

    Acquisitionprocessing

Make up the experiment Select the acquisition criteria : Start and stop the acquisition,Connect the sensors to (magnitudes, repeat it after modifying See belowthe interface measuring time) the parameters)

ModelingAllows you to model a curve (main predefined functions availablewith the option of adding any equation) : 1st level : By function, graph. 2nd level : Differential equations.

CalculationAllows you to apply a calculation series to a magnitude : 1st level :Portion, smoothing. 2nd level : Derivative, integral, parametric curves, linear regression, Fast Fourier transform.

    Processing : additional tools

Scientific spreadsheetCreation of magnitudes, application of formulae using these magnitudes. The formulae no longer call up cells such as A1 or B2 butthe values of the corresponding magnitudes. They are called t[1] oru[2]. Advantage : the formulae retain a scientific connotation as thenames of the magnitudes are apparent. Standard spreadsheet:C1=A1*B1. Scientific spreadsheet : P[1] = U[1]*I[1].

Standard spreadsheet Application of formulae using the coordinates of the cells A1, B$2,$C$3, etc. Numerous mathematical functions available : sine, sum, mean, conditional instructions etc. Display in histograms and circulardiagrams etc.

Interactivity with graph The table and the graph are linked : any change in the table will affectthe graph. It is also possible to see both simultaneously.

    Processing : Graphical spreadsheet

Annotation of a curveGive a title to the curve.Write comments. Annotatean important point.

ReportWrite a tutorial report including text, diagrams andgraphs etc.

  • 7Computer-Assisted Experimentation

    Science Studio Presentation COMPUTER ASSISTED-EXPERIMENTATION

Advantages : Compatible with all suitable video sources

Videos for Windows (webcam USB, videocard, scanner etc.)

    Creation of chronophotographs using avideo

Location of the position of a moving object :manual (image by image), automatic (colorrecognition)

    Graph display as required: y = f(x) or y = f(t)and x = f(t)

Network function : instantly transfer youracquisitions to all connected terminals

    The video Workshop

Video acquisition in mechanics : why ? Extensive range of possibilities (ballistics, oscillation, movement

plan etc.) Simple computerization of measurements Rapid implementation of experiments

Greater motivation of your students by using a modern and attractive tool

Cost / benefit ratio (all that is needed to start is a simple webcamand Gnris 5 +)

    Experiment Video camera Software

The advantage of using video is that you can carry out all kinds of mechanicalexperiments with few physical constraints. You can use a simple ball ormore complex equipment such as amechanical or air cushion bench.

All you need is :- a moving object that can be easily seen

(colored for example)- a contrasting background (so the

moving point stands out clearly)- a distance mark on the movement plan

The video acquisition system allows thevideo sequence to be digitalized quicklyusing the software. A USB webcam is themost simple and economical method ofproducing your videos. It shouldnevertheless be sufficiently complex toprovide access to the main controls of thecamera (ToUCam Pro II recommended).

Signals from all possible analog videosources (video recorder, video cameraetc.) can also be digitalized using digitalization cards.

Our video software solutions ensure allstages of acquisition and processing in thesame environment :Control of acquisition system. Creation ofvideo sequence. Montage (only retainingthe useful part of the film). Digitalizationof trajectory of moving point: y(x) or y(t)and x(t). Processing and usage (modeling, calculation using powerful scientific graphical spreadsheet software).Preparation of a tutorial report.

This software also offers numerous benefits that are unmatched in the scienti-fic video acquisition sector : Picture lossmanagement to ensure video sequencesin a correct chronological order. Creationof chronophotographs. Digitalization oftrajectories: image by image or automati-cally (color recognition). Network func-tion: instantaneous transfer of acquisitionsto all other connected terminals.

    Computer-Assisted Experimentation

VTT conso le and so f tware COMPUTER-ASS ISTED EXPER IMENTAT ION

VTT console The VTT console is a Computer-Assisted-Experiment interface which enables you towork on-line or off-line. It is a multi-purposeconsole, which can be considered as a bench-top interface or as a complement forthe use of Computer-Assited Experiment system outside. It has at its disposal a widerange of sensors for Biology, Chemistry andPhysics tutorials.

The VTT console is supplied with :

    - An internal software (recorder) enabling theautomatic acquisition of values depending on time, on a numbered axis ordepending on an other sensor. It also enables the display of data under severalrepresentation modes : tables, curves or histograms. This software is used for allacquisitions of gross values (weather acquisition, seismology...).

    - A software enabling you to use the consoleas an oscilloscope.

    - The Espace VTT software which enables thepossible data logging on your computer andthe display on your computers screen of thecurves carried out with VTT.

    - Batteries.

    - Mains power supply.

    - Leads for connection to the computer.

Moreover, the VTT console enables the loading of VTT-software dedicated to thestudy of an experimental theme like thehuman respiration, the cardiorespiratoryrate.

    Specifications :Digit display : 128 x 128 pixels (5 x 5 cm).Inputs : 4 measurement channels.Resolution : 10 bits. Scale : 0 / 5 V.Power supply : 6 x LR6 batteries.Effective maximal conversion rate : 100 KHz.Analog output : available on 4 mm bananasockets.Synchronization input : available on 4 mmbanana sockets.Memory : 768 Ko including 128 Ko of savedRAM (experiments results).Computer connection : RS232 type, 11500Bauds.2 models available : with alphanumericdisplay or with digit display.

Robust and easy to put into service.

Big size graphic display 128 x128 pixels, thats to say 5 x 5cm,for a result which can be immediately display under theform of digit value, table, graph.

Real autonomy. Compatible with the Data

Workshop software. Resolution : 10 bits.

    The VTT software foroff-line experiments

    - VTT-Exchanges (Highlighting of respiratoryexchanges of the Human beings).

    - VTT Ohms law : Study of a two-terminal circuit characteristics (resistance, lamps...),calculation of the electrical power).

PreparationYou will choose the VTT software correspon-ding to your tutorial thanks to the menukey of the VTT console and you will connectthe adapted sensor(s).

Then, when chosing among the pre-definedparameters (for example, the type of animal to be studied (aerial or aquatic...), youwill multiply the experiments subjects, compare the results and draw conclusions.

Acquisition and resultsWith the VTT software, the display and interpretation of data are made in two times :

    - Gross acquisition of data : the curve on the screen simply represents the measurement carried out by the sensor. The interpretation and graph representation is then very easy.

    - Data processing by the VTT software : the software analyses and re-studies the data, processes them and displays a recalculated curve which simplifies theunderstanding of the phenomenon.

You will then adapt the experiment and the interpretation at the understanding level of the students. The obtained results canbe directly printed (off-line) on the VTT-printer.

Four VTT software are available (three forBiology and one for Physics) :

    - VTT-CRF (measurement of electrocardio-gram, of exchanged gas volumes anddisplay of cardiac and ventilatory rates curves),

    - VTT-Respi (measurement of animal respira-tion),
