Homeroom ParentsHomeroom Parents serve as an important l iaison for teachers and families in the classrooms. The responsibil it ies may include assisting with communication by placing phone calls to parents about important events, assisting teachers in small projects such as coffee hours and f ield trips and creating class newsletters and phone directories.

Social Media Night

Chances are that by middle school your child already possesses a savvy understanding of social media, which is a developmentally appropriate means of connecting with peers. However, without appropriate guidance and skills, util izing social media can become a stressful and potentially unsafe communication platform for teens. In January, parents in grades 4-8 joined Amigos staff as well as Cambridge Detective Magalhaes and School Resource Off icer Ortiz for a discussion around social media awareness and protection.
Cyber safety, advocacy, and bullying are discussed at a developmentally appropriate level in the Amigos Upper School health curricula. 6th and 7th graders learn how to identify, combat, and advocate against cyber bullying. In 8th grade, students learn about the social and legal implications of ?sexting?, or posting negative images or comments of a sexual nature online or to peers. One of the most important preventative tools to avoid teens becoming involved in negative social media engagement is when parents talk with their teens. In this meeting, Health Teacher Patrick Kantlehner and Program Leader for Health Education and Social-Emotional Development, Kim DeAndrade focused on three talking tips when speaking with your teen about sexting:
1. Inquire with your child to see what he/she already knows, 2. Focus on values and feelings of privacy, and 3. Try to come up with ideas or strategies to make healthy choices if the
situation arises.
Detective Magalhaes and Off icer Ortiz also offered what teens and parents should do from a legal perspective if they encounter sexting. Police take sexting seriously, and shared that it is important to inform teens that once an image or communication is posted, it is no longer one?s personal information and can be shared with others. If your teen receives or sends a social media photo or interaction that you believe is sexting, parents are advised to report this information to police staff . The more parents communicate with their teens as well as other parents regarding health social media interactions, they more empowered, safe, and skillful teens will become in their social-media communication.

Los estudiantes de 7mo actuaron como arquitectos durante el otoño. El profesorado y la administración de la escuela fueron los clientes de los estudiantes. Primero, dibujaron planos del interior y exterior de sus casas. Luego crearon modelos tridimensionales siguiendo los deseos del cliente. Crearon modelos de cartón, pedazos de madera y otros materiales encontrados. Los estudiantes y algunos maestros celebramos la culminación del proyecto a través de una presentación en diciembre. Seventh graders were architects this fall. An Amigos teacher or administrator became their client to create the house of his or her dreams. First, the students drew up plans of the interior and exterior of the house following the client?s requests. Then, they created a 3D model out of cardboard, pieces of wood and other found materials. Students and some teachers celebrated the students? hard work during a mini showcase in December. They did an amazing job. Congratulations!
Sixth Graders Visit BiogenBy Laurie Ferhani, 6th & 8th grade Science, [email protected]
In December of 2016, the sixth graders went to the Biogen Community Laboratory in Kendall Square, Cambridge. This f ield trip is a part of our study of Light with applications to the f ield of medicine.
The Community Lab is a state-of-the-art, real-world facil ity where students engage in hands-on biotechnology experiments and interact with Biogen Idec employees. Through the Community Lab, Biogen Idec is demonstrating their strong commitment to promoting science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education.
Students had to work together to f igure how much of a protein medicine is digested by the body. The students were given the minimum blood concentration in order for the medication to be effective. Students used a spectrophotometer to determine concentration of digested, undigested medicine as well as some controls.
Many of the students walked away from the experience with a sense of how medications are tested and how they get to market. One student was heard saying, "This was one of the best f ield trips ever because we actually learned some new things and conducted a lab using high tech lab
equipment".

Recientemente volvimos a celebrar la Noche Multicultural y cómo en otros años, ¡la experiencia fue maravillosa! El consejo estudiantil de la escuela intermedia participó proactivamente en todos los aspectos de la organización del evento. The second annual Multicultural Night recently occurred and it was once again a wonderful experience! Our upper school Student Council was proactively involved in all aspects of the organization for this event. Among some of the highlights were the speeches made by six upper school students that addressed their ideas relating to the importance and impact of embracing our diverse community while also discussing the value of supporting inclusive worldviews. The entire Amigos community was honored in this celebration through the construction of family f lags, personalized country presentations and in our encompassing feast which showcased foods that were representative of our families from all over the world!
A Midsummer Night?s Dream

Thanks to the generosity of the Friends of Amigos, the Amigos eighth grade (and a few of their fortunate teachers), will attend a production of A Midsummer Night?s Dream. The stars must have aligned, as The Actor?s Shakespeare Project (ASP) is presenting the Shakespearian comedy just as our students are scheduled to be concluding their study of the text. Students are not only working through in-class readings of the text, but are also analyzing the play for universal themes of control and power. This is in keeping with the ASP?s mission, dedication to working in and with the community through Shakespeare?s text. According to their website http:/ / bit.ly/2mCNSpw ?Actors? Shakespeare Project believes Shakespeare?s words are urgently relevant to our times...These projects inspire civic dialogue, build relationships between people, strengthen communities, and reveal something about what it means to be human here and now.? On May 18, students will journey over to the Multicultural Arts Center in Cambridge, and prepare to not only be whisked away to a world of fairies and misguided romance, but also to engage in the essentially human dialogue this play engenders.
Stay tuned for some ?Midsummer? scenes as part of a larger eighth grade theater performance in early June.

6th Grade ELA and ADLE

6th grade students are studying the themes of tolerance and perspective through reading and writ ing about the experience of growing up in a multicultural and multil ingual nation. In ADLE, they have read the collection of short stories Béisbol en Abril by Gary Soto, and have started drafting individual monologues based on a self-selected character in one of the stories, examining the motivations that drive a person living in a bicultural community. While reading and analyzing Laurence Yep?s historical f iction novel Dragonwings in ELA, students are also comparing the policies facing 19th century immigrants to the recent developments in national attitudes and policy towards immigration. In both classes, students are deepening their thinking through discussion and writ ing about the ways in which individual communities hold onto their cultural heritage while moving into the future as a multicultural nation.

Los estudiantes de 6to grado están estudiando los temas de la tolerancia y la perspectiva mediante la lectura y escritura sobre la experiencia de crecer en una nación multicultural y multil ingüe. In its second year, our Lectores Amiguitos program has expanded to include most of the grades in the school. The 6th and 7th graders have met with their kindergarten and 2nd grade buddies to read, talk about their favorite books, and to make reading-question bookmarks to help ?litt le buddies? guide their independent reading. Inter-age reading partnerships have been shown to build a positive attitude towards reading on both sides of the partnership? and we have certainly seen evidence of that in our program. Both groups of students look forward to the meetings? their only complaint is that we don?t meet often enough!

7th Grade ELA and ADLE

Identity, perception, and memory have been the central, def ining themes of the 7th grade ELA and ADLE classes this semester. While reading and analyzing memoirs in ADLE from such writers as Esmeralda Santiago, Francisco Jiménez, and Alma Flor Ada, students have selected a central def ining moment in their own lives in order to create their own memoir. In ELA, students have read informational nonfiction, memoir, and social commentary (in the form of rap and song lyrics) as they investigated the dif ferent internal and external factors that inf luence individual as well as community or cultural identity? and how those factors can be used or manipulated to shape both behaviors and self-perception. In both classes, the discussion of individual identity and how we see ourselves and others has guided students to examine not only their own identity and self-perception, but also how that identity has been shaped by the experiences and inf luences in their l ives.

La identidad, percepción y memoria han sido los temas centrales de las clases de ELA y ADLE este semestre. Hour of CodeBy: David Albert, Instructional Technology Specialist
The Hour of Code is an international endeavor to encourage computer programming among students and adults of all ages. Annually in December, the organization provides hundreds of activit ies suitable for introducing computer coding in a variety of settings in just one hour. This year in the Amigos Upper School, David Albert, our Instructional Technology Specialist, worked with 6th and 8th grade students on Hour of Code activit ies with the support of the math teachers, Ms. Hayes, Mr. Boyd, and Ms. Sawady.
Sixth-grade students were introduced to a hybrid coding environment (http:/ / code.org/ starwars) that began with a drag-and-drop programing language called Blockly, and then moved quickly into Javascript, one of the languages most frequently used by computer programmers. After completing an init ial set of challenges, students were shown how the Blockly language can be translated into Javascript, and were able to write Javascript programs that maneuvered a robot around a screen and responded to keyboard controls. By the end of the hour, students had completed coding a video game.
Eighth-grade students worked with Javascript or RoboBlockly to tie computer coding directly into lessons in functional notation and algebra. In one math class, students used the http:/ / code.org/ khan website to learn Javascript commands for designing drawings executed in code. In the other class, students used RoboBlockly to help solve algebraic problems involving linear equations, and to test their solutions with a robot that they programmed to draw lines on a coordinate plane. Although Hour of Code takes place for just one week in December, we continue to look for additional ways to incorporate computer programming into the math curriculum this year. Stay tuned!
La Hora de Codif icación es una iniciativa internacional que promueve la programación informática entre los estudiantes y los adultos de todas edades. El octavo grado es un año durante el cual los estudiantes se enfocan en profundizar el análisis sobre la lectura. Eighth grade is a year in which students focus on deepening their analysis about their reading. Students annotate and analyze quotes and textual evidence to delve into the themes authors explore and to interpret how an author?s craft contributes to the revelation of those themes. These analyses tend to be shared orally or in writ ing among students.
This past February 2017, eighth graders created Book Trailers to present both their l iterary analyses and practice media technology skills established by the 8th grade district and state standards.
These student samples highlight a profound and thorough literary analysis of independent reading, a coherent and cohesive writ ing of ideas, and the use media technology tools such as ?Power Point? and ?Prezi?. These Book Trailers will serve as book recommendations shared among our upper school students.

¡La mental idad de crecimiento en la Escuela Intermedia de Amigos! Trish Hayes, Matemáticas 6to grado, [email protected]
Este semestre, los estudiantes de 6to grado le han dedicado tiempo de los periodos de Consejería, Matemáticas, ELA y ADLE a hablar sobre cómo pueden cultivar una mentalidad de crecimiento. Estas conversaciones están basadas en la investigación de Carol Dweck, una psicóloga en la Universidad de Stanford, quien describe dos tipos de mentalidades que impactan cómo las personas se enfrentan a desafíos en la escuela y en la vida: mentalidades f ijas y mentalidades de crecimiento. Una mentalidad f ija nos dice que nuestras habilidades son innatas e incambiables, mientras que una mentalidad de crecimiento ref leja la creencia que podemos cultivar nuestras destrezas a través del t iempo con esfuerzo y perseverancia.
Los estudiantes han estado ref lexionando sobre las formas en que sus mentalidades pueden apoyar o complicar el proceso de aprendizaje. Nuestro deseo es que estas conversaciones puedan ayudar a nuestros estudiantes a desarrollarse para aceptar desafíos y ver los errores como oportunidades de crecimiento, en vez de dejar que el miedo al fracaso o la incomodidad haga que eviten probar retos nuevos.

Una forma poderosa de apoyar su crecimiento es ayudar a que sus hijos/as identif ican estrategias exitosas. Así que, si su hijo/a lucha en una materia, pregúntale sobre lo que están aprendiendo de sus dif icultades, qué ven cómo los próximos pasos en el desarrollo de sus destrezas y ayúdalo/a a identif icar recursos que puedan apoyarlos. Un excelente primer paso sería contactar al/ a maestro/a de su hijo/a para encontrar esos recursos.
También puede animar a su hijo/a al compartir áreas en su vida donde usted tiene una mentalidad f ija. Usted puede modelar el t ipo de perseverancia e intrepidez que queremos que ellos desarrollen. Trabajemos juntos/as para capacitar a nuestros jóvenes a apreciar un buen reto tanto dentro y fuera del salón de clase para que puedan cambiar sus mentalidades ahora, ¡y puedan cambiar el mundo en el futuro!

Growth Mindset at the Amigos Upper School ! Trish Hayes, 6th grade Math, [email protected]
This semester 6th grade students have spent t ime during their advisory, math, ELA and ADLE classes talking about how to cultivate a growth mindset. These conversations are based on the research of Carol Dweck, a psychologist at Stanford who states that there are two types of mindsets that impact how we confront challenges in school and in life: f ixed mindsets and growth mindsets. A f ixed mindset tells us that our abilit ies are innate and unalterable while a growth mindset ref lects a belief that we can cultivate our skil ls over time through effort and perseverance.
Students have been ref lecting on the ways in which their mindsets can support or complicate their learning processes. Our hope is that these conversations will help students grow into people who embrace challenges and view mistakes as opportunities to grow, instead of letting fear of failure or embarrassment stop them from trying new things.
So how can you, as a parent, support your child in developing a growth mindset? Dweck suggests that it requires more than just blindly praising effort. She recommends helping children to notice what types of experiences and environments trigger them to fall into a f ixed mindset, since none of us has a growth mindset about everything all of the time. For example, if your student feels that they ?just aren?t that good? at art or math, you can encourage them to notice their mindset and challenge the assumption that they cannot change or grow if they try. One powerful way to support their growth is to help students identify strategies that lead to success. So if your student continually struggles in a subject, ask them what they are learning from their setbacks, what they see as their next steps in developing their skil ls, and help them to identify resources they can tap in to for support. Contacting your child?s classroom teacher would be a great f irst step in seeking out these resources.
You can also encourage your student by sharing some of the areas in your life that cause you to have a f ixed mindset and trying to model the kind of perseverance and fearlessness you want them to develop. Let?s work together to empower our young people to relish a good challenge both inside and outside of the classroom. Middle school is a time of big transitions for students ? physically, emotionally, and academically. These transitions, along with the demands of middle school l ife, create stress for our students. In the Amigos Upper School, we have been using mindfulness is a way to help students cope with stress, improve their focus, and feel calmer.
Last year, I noticed many students were very anxious about taking tests. Students who were able to explain mathematical concepts during class were not able to answer similar questions on a test. In collaboration with Amy Hrobak, the middle school counselor, I began to dedicate 15 minutes per week to class-wide mindfulness practice. The benefits are clear: students are calmer and more focused during class immediately following mindfulness interventions, and students appear calmer at the start of an assessment.
This year, Alice Cohen at the District off ice of Social Emotional Learning began an init iative to bring mindfulness to students across Cambridge. Natalia Cepeda, a former high school teacher from Argentina who is training in mindfulness based stress reduction, has been working with the middle schoolers at Amigos. Students in Caroline Butler-Rahman and Michael Batt?s homerooms as well as Brian Boyd?s math class have receiving tools to help them with focus, gratefulness, conflict resolution, and ?heartfulness?. Students are listening, they are observing, and they are gaining skil ls that will help them navigate this challenging time period in their l ives and will be useful for many years to come.

Conciencia Plena con estudiantes de la escuela intermedia

La escuela intermedia es una etapa de muchas transiciones físicas, emocionales y académicas para los estudiantes de la escuela intermedia. Estas transiciones junto con las expectativas de la vida escolar, crean estrés en nuestros estudiantes. En la Escuela Amigos, hemos estado practicando Conciencia Plena como una manera de manejar el estrés, mejorar el enfoque y sentirse más relajado.
El año pasado, noté que los estudiantes se ponían muy ansiosos al tomar exámenes. Algunos estudiantes que podían contestar conceptos matemáticos en clase no podían contestar preguntas similares en exámenes.
Con la colaboración de Amy Hrobak, la consejera de la escuela intermedia, comencé a dedicarle 15 minutos de clase a la semana a la práctica de Conciencia Plena. Los beneficios son claros: los estudiantes están más calmados y más enfocados en clase inmediatamente después de intervenciones de conciencia plena y aparentan más calmados al principio de una evaluación.
Este año, Alice Cohen de la Oficina del Aprendizaje Socioemocional del distrito comenzó la iniciativa de traer conciencia plena a todos los estudiantes en Cambridge.
