Report: October 20 Tasting --Don Denberg and Percy Dougherty

A stellar job was done by Joe and Arlete Pugliese for the Wines of Pulia Tasting on October 20 at VIVO Italian Kitchen in South Whitehall, PA. Joe treated us to a variety of wines from his homeland of Pulia which Is the heel of the boot in Italy. This area is especially known for the black Troia grape and the Primtivo grape which can be marketed under the term Zinfandel in the United States since it is genetically the same group. As you can see from the chart below, there is a great discrepancy in scores for this tasting. Some people scored a wine as low as 11 where as others graded it as high as 20. Although these wines were excellent, it is very difficult for a wine to score a perfect 20. On the other hand, a score of 11 shows that a wine has some flaw to it. In terms of the crowd favorites, the top three wines are: 1. Boca Di Lupo Castel Del Monte DOC 2010: 94 points James Suckling. Aromas of dried dark fruits, figs, walnuts and incense. Full body, firm tannins and a flavorful finish. Made from organically grown grapes. One of the most exciting wines from Puglia. Drink or hold.

2. Puer Apulia Castel Del Monte Riserva DOCG 2011: 91 points Wine Enthusiast. There's a focused sharpness to the nose, with aromas of red currant, cranberry and under ripe red plum melding with shades of green tobacco and purple flowers. This is tense and linear on the palate, offering flavors tart red berries and peppery spice riding on a roaring river of acidity. Medium-grained, gripping tannins frame it all.

3. Torcicoda Primitivo Salento IGT 2014: 88 points Wine Enthuiast. Red cherry and blackberry aromas meld with snippets of baking spice and menthol on the nose. The medium-bodied palate is firm, with structured tannins and crisp acidity, housing juicy berry flavors dotted with red floral tones. Dark plum rounds out the finish. Avg. Std.

PLEASE VOLUNTEER. The Chapter is only as good as the members make it. We all have to volunteer to help

make it even better. The most important job is to host a tasting. Since I am retiring as Chapter Chair at the end of 2019, it is important for the new Chair to have tastings scheduled. If you are interested in hosting a tasting, please let me know. I have a list of restaurants if your house is too small to host 46 people (a 2 bottle tasting). I can also help your obtain the wine. Some topics we need are Beaujolais, Washington State Reds, Burgundy, White Burgundy and Chablis, Brunello di Montalcino, Barolo and Barbaresco, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Chianti, Petite Sirah, Valpolicella and Amarone, or any other wine type or region of your choice.
