Talk About Health
Nutrient of theMonth:
Vitamin DThis nutrient works
with calcium tomaintain strong, healthy bones.People with a vitaminD deficiency candevelop rickets (inchildren) orosteoporosis (inadults).
Salmon, tuna, eggs and mushroomsare some of the fewnatural sources of thevitamin, but foodssuch as milk, cerealsand orange juice areoften fortified with it.
The human bodycan make vitamin Dwhen exposed tosunlight, giving it itsnickname “thesunshine vitamin.”Spending 10 to 15minutes outside inthe sun—withoutsunscreen—threetimes a week shouldproduce the vitaminD needed by thebody.
Heart Disease PreventionBy: Brian Rosso, R.D.This month I am writing about living a
heart-healthy lifestyle. I hope you findthe information below helpful in youreveryday lives.
Visit your doctor on a regular basis.Monitor your blood pressure andcholesterol levels.
Maintain a healthy weight. Keep yourbody mass index (BMI) level under 25.BMI levels above 25 are associated withan increased risk of developing heartdisease. Your BMI level is determinedby using a formula that includes aperson’s weight and height.
Here is a list of heart-healthy foods:salmon, oatmeal, tuna, carrots, spinach, broccoli, sweet potatoes, asparagus, oranges, tomatoes, cantaloupe, andtea. All of these foods can be found onthe menu at American House.
Limit your salt and saturated fatintake. American House offers manyheart-healthy food choices on ourmenu; just look for the picture ofthe heart.
Stay active. Try to do some form ofphysical activity 30 minutes everyday. This is also a great way to managestress!
American House offers many ways tolive a heart-healthy lifestyle.
Arthritis AwarenessMonth
Many people with arthritis areso desperate for relief that theyare willing to try remedies thathave not been tested or provento be helpful. Some of these, such as snake venom, areactually harmful. Others, such ascopper bracelets, are harmlessbut have no official research toback their validity.
How can you tell whether aremedy is unproven?
• The remedy claims that atreatment, such as a lotionor cream, works for all typesof arthritis and otherdiseases.
• Scientific support isreported as coming fromonly one research study.
• The label has no directionsfor use or warnings aboutside effects.
Even with these “fake”remedies, you can find sometrustworthy, nontraditionaltechniques to help with yoursymptoms. For example, recentstudies suggest that Chineseacupuncture may easeosteoarthritis (OA) pain for somepeople. Others have had luckwith dietary supplements, suchas glucosamine and chondroitin.Research now shows that thesetwo dietary supplements mayhelp lessen OA pain.
Scientists are studyingalternative treatments to find outhow they work and if they keepthe joint changes caused byarthritis from getting worse.
