Memory Care CelebratingDog Days of Summer

August is a month of no specialholidays. August brings to mind the“Dog Days of Summer.” A picnic isplanned for the memory careresidents to Pottawatomie Park.

They will also have some pool daysand cool days for Popsicles and rootbeer floats. Our gardens should beproducing some delicious vegetablesto toss into a fresh salad. Manyoutdoor activities are planned.

BlueberriesBy Emily BeardBlueberries are often labeled a

“superfood” because they are low incalories, but high in fiber and vitaminsC and K!

Blueberries are believed to containone of the highest amounts ofantioxidants of ALL commonlyconsumed fruits, vegetables, spicesand seasonings. Eating a diet rich inantioxidants protects our bodies fromfree radicals that can damage ourDNA and contribute to aging anddiseases such as cancer and heartdisease.

Other health benefits fromregular blueberry intake include:

• Lowers blood pressure• Lowers risk of heart attacks• Improves brain function and

memory• Improves insulin sensitivity and

lowers blood sugar levels• Lowers risk of urinary tract

infections• More rapid muscle recovery and

less muscle soreness afterexercise

Raw, fresh blueberries—not frozenor in jam—provide you with the bestflavor and the greatest nutritionalbenefits.

Blueberries are especially easy tofind in Michigan because over 20different varieties are grown locally.Michigan is the No. 1 state inhighbush blueberry production, withgrowers producing over 100 millionpounds every year. The harvestseason runs from late June throughearly October, so all of us have plentyof time to eat our fill of freshblueberries this summer!
