Introduction

Today, fengshui is very popular and anyone can take a class in it. In the old days

fengshui was usually taught last, after a student had already learned palm and face

reading, astrology, and other Chinese metaphysical arts and sciences. Even before

studying metaphysics, studying the classics of the dao was a prerequisite, including the

Dao De Jing, and Zhuangzi.1

Daoism means following the flow of the universe. Buddhism and Confucianism go

against nature, because they give humanity a special position between heaven and earth.

Daoism also recognizes that man is between heaven and earth, but he should change with

the flow of qi the same way a plant has its cycle of growth throughout the four seasons.

Man is really no different than other animals and plants except that he thinks he is special.

This separates us from the universe and gets us in trouble.

The most famous book of Daoism is the Dao De Jing, said to have been written by

Laozi during the Warring States Period (475-221 B.C.E). The dao cannot be defined, but

it is related to understanding or being what is appropriate. De (often translated as ‘virtue’

or ‘morals’) is doing what is appropriate; it is not really the same as ‘morals.’

Zi Wei Dou Shu originated from Daoist thought. In a Zi Wei Dou Shu reading, we

see that each person has their own pre-programmed nature. Don’t put your own standards

on others. They are only what the universe has made them.

This class includes information on how to approach the reading of a chart, and then

focuses on peach blossom, marriage, and divorce. We present three case studies, two of

them focused on marriage. Through the information in this class, you will improve your

skill in reading a Zi Wei Dou Shu chart.

Part 1: Theoretical Discussion

First, let’s review some important aspects of reading a chart. Then we will discuss some

specific signs of peach blossom, marriage, and divorce.

Reading a chart:

1. Know the character or specialty of each of the stars, especially the Fourteen Major

Stars. For example, 1 Zi Wei is the emperor, so it likes to command or demand. 9 Tan

Lang is greedy, especially for peach blossom, so it is very social. 2 Tian Ji is always

moving and always thinking too much, so it is unstable. These are just examples. All stars

have their own attributes.

2. Pay attention to special combinations of stars.

Paired stars are very powerful when together or when they see each other (in the three

combinations relationship or opposite): 17 Di Kong and 18 Di Jie, 15 Wen Chang and

16 Wen Qu, 21 Huo Xing and 22 Ling Xing, etc.

Other combinations have specific meanings, for example 6 Lian Zhen and 9 Tan Lang

(peach blossom), or 4 Wu Qu and 7 Tian Fu (money). 36 Lu Cun plus 49 Ming Ma

mean making a lot of money when traveling, but if 44 Kong Wang is also there, it

collapses any gain. There are many combinations like these. These combinations

transform their significance like a chemical reaction: the meaning is more than just

the sum of the two stars. Quite a few were discussed in the basic series of Zi Wei Dou

Shu classes, but you will learn more of them in the various Case Study Classes.

3. Look at the location of the ming palace:

The ming in the four corners: The corners are ‘horses.’ They show a need to move

around. They indicate being busy. However, it also depends on the stars inside the

palace. For example, if 2 Tian Ji is in a corner palace, movement is even stronger and

less balanced. If 5 Tian Tong is in a corner, it may be less lazy and more willing to

take action.

The ming in the four earths: the person will be stable, even lazy. If 5 Tian Tong, is in

an earth palace, it is even stronger and less balanced, but 2 Tian Ji will calm down a

little when it is there.

The ming in the four directions: the person loves to enjoy life, including social

Page 7: American Feng Shui Institute · Zi Wei Dou Shu originated from Daoist thought. In a Zi Wei Dou Shu reading, we see that each person has their own pre-programmed nature. Don’t put

interaction (especially with flirtation), wine, romance, and parties. If 9 Tan Lang is in

one of the four directions, it is even stronger and less balanced. However, a star like 4

Wu Qu may become a little less serious and a little more playful when in one of the

four directions.

4. Look at the opposite palace and the palaces in the three combinations relationship:

Together, the ming, career, and money (three combinations relationship), and the travel

palace (opposite) are called the four main palaces. All of them have a strong influence on

ming and on each other.

The opposite palace has the strongest effect; perhaps you can think of the travel

palace as what you experience out in the world. The ming has the second strongest

influence; it is who you are. The palaces in the three combinations relationship have the

third strongest influence. They are like the friends you spend time with.

This class will focus on the spouse palace. Everyone seems to care about their

spouse palace. The spouse palace is always opposite career. Spouse, karma, and travel are

in the three combinations relationship. A person’s travel and career affect spouse: a

spouse is unhappy if career and travel keep the couple separated. Of course, since the

karma palace describes the emotional make-up of a person, it is also essential to examine

it to see if a marriage can succeed.

5. Learn the Four Transforming Stars by heart, or at least keep a copy of that table nearby.

Don’t forget to look at how they gang up in the palaces related by the three combinations

relationship and the opposite palace.

6. Understand the luck periods and the influence they have: Large and Small Cycles, the

current year.

Remember the series of twelve stars that represent a life cycle? If the ming of a time

period (Large or Small Cycle) is in a palace with 78 Chang Sheng, or 82 Di Wang, it

brings very smooth luck (unless all the stars are bad). If it is in with 86 Mu, 87 Jue, or

85 Si, the luck is not so smooth. Even if the other stars are good, they are not able to

bring out all their benefits. The best advice is to lay low when these stars are in ming.

If the palace with the same branch as the current year coincides with the Large or

Small Cycle ming, that year will be very intense since that palace has extra power.

Whether good or bad depends on the stars inside the palace.

o 90 Sui Jian is the first of the current year stars. It is always in the palace with

the same branch as the current year.

o If 75 Da Hao is in the same palace, it may be a difficult or dangerous year. For

example, if it is in one of the four corners with 36 Lu Cun and 44 Kong Wang,

Page 9: American Feng Shui Institute · Zi Wei Dou Shu originated from Daoist thought. In a Zi Wei Dou Shu reading, we see that each person has their own pre-programmed nature. Don’t put

there may be a big accident, possibly even death.2 This is called the collapse

of Lu Cun (祿倒).

o You should always pay special attention to the palace that has the same branch

as the current year, regardless of its palace category. For example, heed any

warnings in the mao palace during a mao year, regardless of whether it is

ming, health, money, or whatever.

You can calculate 36 Lu Cun, 37 Qing Yang, and 38 Tuo Luo based on the current

year stem. (You can even do it for the Large Cycle.) For example, in a ji stem year, Lu

Cun will be in the wu palace and Qing Yang and Tuo Luo will be on each side. If a

person’s Small Cycle ming has a lifetime Qing Yang or Tuo Luo, and the current year

Qing Yang or Tuo Luo fall in the same palace, it is a very dangerous time. It is as

critical as 48 Hua Ji. Qing Yang is sharp and quick and especially means big danger.

Problems caused by Tuo Luo last a long time.

2 Master Sang says that he finds Zi Wei Dou Shu about 75-85% accurate for predicting someone’s death.

Of course, with less experience, the accuracy decreases from there.

Peach Blossom, marriage, and divorce Now we will present some special configurations that affect a person’s romantic

relationships, their ability to get married, be happily married, and the occurrence of a

separation or divorce. Some of these configurations are very specific, but often close

variations will have a similar effect, so observe carefully when a chart is nearly the same.

There is an art to reading a chart than cannot be communicated in words. You will

develop it with practice.

Here are some of these special configurations:

Predicting when peach blossom can occur: In the Small Cycle layer of the chart:

The ming palace has peach blossom stars and is in one of the four directions (zi, wu,

mao, or you).

8 Tai Yin with a low rating and transformed by 48 Hua Ji in the ming brings peach

blossom. (It can bring peach blossom even without Hua Ji and with a higher rating,

but is not as strong.)

9 Tan Lang with current year 54 Hong Luan in ming.

5 Tian Tong transformed by 48 Hua Ji in karma, ming, or spouse. This also represents

a broken heart, so be careful. Two Stars for Peach Blossom or Marriage

Predicting when a marriage can occur:

Marriage can occur when you see one or more of the following conditions in the Small

Cycle layer of the chart:

The karma, ming, or spouse palace has peach blossom stars plus Hua Lu.

15 Wen Chang and/or 16 Wen Qu with 47 Hua Ke in the money palace (opposite

spouse).

The ming has 55 Tian Xi or 54 Hong Luan and sees 15 Wen Chang and/or 16 Wen Qu

with 47 Hua Ke (especially from the current year stem). 55 Tian Xi and 54 Hong

Luan can be calculated based on the current year, as well as on the birth information

(see table on the previous page).

Marriage can occur without these, but if you see any of these combinations, the

likelihood is very high.

Predicting a happy marriage:

The following are for the lifetime or Large Cycle layer of the chart. Of course, if the

palace also contains sha or 48 Hua Ji, the happiness is dissolved.

For a woman, 3 Tai Yang in ming or karma with a good rating (in the daytime palaces,

yin through wu) can signify a good husband. He will not be a burden to her. The

marriage will bring good things.

8 Tai Yin in the ‘night’ palaces is the same for a male.

54 Hong Luan in a ming that is located in one of the four earth palaces.

14 Po Jun in ming in the zi or wu palace enjoys all the benefits of a good relationship.

 In the spouse palace:

o 7 Tian Fu is stable and accommodating.

o 12 Tian Liang: has good and bad mixed. The marriage faces difficulty but it

can be handled and overcome. The husband is older than the wife. There may

be a ‘cold war’ in the marriage. 12 Tian Liang in spouse often signifies

remarriage to the same person. 12 Tian Liang sees difficulty and transforms it

into good. Therefore, the later marriage or the remarriage is better than the

early part.

o 15 Wen Chang and/or 16 Wen Qu: enjoy fun in the bedroom with each other.

Also a classy or educated spouse. But beware of affairs.

If the karma palace has both 15 Wen Chang and 16 Wen Qu: it is possible the person

is gay.

Page 12: American Feng Shui Institute · Zi Wei Dou Shu originated from Daoist thought. In a Zi Wei Dou Shu reading, we see that each person has their own pre-programmed nature. Don’t put

Signs of divorce or separation: Below we will describe configurations that tend

to signify divorce or separation when found in the ming or spouse palace.

If these configurations are found in a lifetime chart, then it is destiny to divorce. If

they are found in the Large or Small Cycle, it is possible to work through it, but it is not

always easy. It is harder for a marriage to survive a ten-year period of bad stars, as people

lose patience after a while. Unlike fengshui, astrology doesn’t really have remedies.

However, if carefully handled, maybe divorce can be avoided.

Stars that are likely to have an adverse effect on marriage when in the Large Cycle

spouse palace include:

 14 Po Jun,

 10 Ju Men,

 48 Hua Ji,

 the six sha, or

1 Zi Wei together with 7 Tian Fu plus 23 Zuo Fu or 24 You Bi.

Males should beware of 56 Gu Chen.

Females should watch out for 47 Gua Su.

The spouse palace in one of the four corners can also cause danger for the

marriage, regardless of what star is inside.

Below, we will also give a few configurations in a Four Pillars chart that can cause

separation or divorce.

The six sha:

The six sha are 21 Huo Xing, 22 Ling Xing, 37 Qing Yang, 38 Tuo Luo, 17 Di Jie, and 18

Di Kong.

In the spouse palace, 37 Qing Yang is like a knife in the marriage. It is uneasy,

uncomfortable. It signifies severing the relationship. The spouse is holding the knife,

so he or she determines when the relationship is severed.

38 Tuo Luo is long suffering or something hidden.

21 Huo Xing and 22 Ling Xing: these cause bad things to happen fast. They signify

someone who is irritable and impatient.

17 Di Jie and 18 Di Kong: They rob or empty out any benefit from the spouse palace.

Page 13: American Feng Shui Institute · Zi Wei Dou Shu originated from Daoist thought. In a Zi Wei Dou Shu reading, we see that each person has their own pre-programmed nature. Don’t put

Sha is always bad. If it falls in the spouse palace, it directly affects the marriage. If it

falls in karma, it affects the person’s emotional outlook and is in the three combinations

relationship with the spouse palace. If it is in ming, it affects all aspects of a person’s life,

including their marriage.

Note that there is one exception: if one of these stars is alone in the spouse palace

(with no Major Stars) and the person marries someone with the same star alone in ming,

it is a perfect match. It is not really that the sha is gone; it is just that the two people have

little problem tolerating each other’s sha.

If the spouse palace is in a corner, there is always the danger of separation due to

instability and movement.

If there are two Major Stars, it increases the possibility of separation. However, if the

star combination matches ming of the spouse’s chart, this configuration is not a

problem. If only one of the two stars matches, they are somewhat compatible, but not

a perfect match. It is a principle that if the spouse’s ming matches the star or situation

in some way, other possible outcomes of that star may not happen: the star has

already manifested its qi.

The possibility of separation or divorce is also increased if there are bad stars (such as

one of the six sha) in the corner spouse palace. The more sha, the greater the

potential.

In the old days, a corner spouse palace, especially with two Major Stars, could also

mean that a man has more than one wife at the same time, but today bigamy is illegal.

Therefore, today, it usually means divorce and remarriage.

However, if the spouse travels a lot, a corner palace is not as bad since it matches his

or her nature.

separation. This combination often means a second marriage.

is almost 100% certain. With 23 Zuo Fu or 24 You Bi, it is also very likely that the

spouse will remarry (someone else).

Ming is 8 Tai Yin and Shen is 2 Tian Ji or vice versa: married two or more times.

Having 45 Hua Lu or other good stars may counteract it.

Note that this configuration is not the same as having Tian Ji and Tai Yin together in

ming. Tian Ji and Tai Yin together can be a very beautiful and VERY high class

prostitute.3

In general, if Tian Ji is in ming, you should marry someone six or more years older as

older people are more wise and patient.

When Tian Ji is in the Small or Large Cycle ming, ‘the family is turned upside down.’

There will be trouble at home. If a female client complains of family problems, check

the location of 2 Tian Ji first for clues.

Tian Ji transformed by 48 Hua Ji causes big trouble. Tian Ji fears Hua Ji a lot,

especially the current year Hua Ji. If this is in your Small or Large Cycle ming, move

or redecorate. This gives you a ‘physical headache, not a luck headache.’

3 But this doesn’t have to occur: LW knows a few women with this combination who have had other types

of careers.

9 Tan Lang is the strongest peach blossom star. It is easy for Tan Lang to have affairs,

even if s/he loves the spouse. But Tan Lang can negotiate. S/He can give you what

you like, so s/he is often forgiven.

Tan Lang plus sha in spouse: If there is no sha, he tries to make things right and calm

her down. With sha, he doesn’t care how she feels.

9 Tan Lang with 6 Lian Zhen: Lian Zhen is second strongest peach blossom star. This

is the worst peach blossom combination. The peach blossom is too strong. It is even

worse with sha: he doesn’t care about the damage. This is bad in ming and in spouse.

4 Wu Qu 9 Tan Lang in spouse: 4 Wu Qu loves money more than people so it is

lonely. Lonely stars in the spouse palace are not good. But 9 Tan Lang loves to go out

and fool around. Perhaps the spouse is cold and distant at home but goes outside for

affairs.

1 Zi Wei 9 Tan Lang: This is worse than with 4 Wu Qu because it has more of a need

to dominate. It needs a lot of sex (Tan Lang) and demands it (Zi Wei). In a male’s

ming, this could be a gangster. It is considered very bad in a female’s ming. If it is in

the original or Large Cycle ming and it also has 26 Tian Yao or 58 Xian Chi and is in

the three combinations relationship with stars like 54 Hong Luan, 23 Zuo Fu, 24 You

Bi, this person is a bar girl.

Ju Men is bad in any palace representing a relative: arguments and/or secret affairs.

3 Tai Yang 10 Ju Men: one is bright, hot, and giving. The other is dark, cold, and has

poor communication.

In spouse, this combination can also mean your spouse is from another country or

province, or of a different race. If so, this can remove some of the difficulty, although

it may imply poor communications because of differences in language or culture.

10 Ju Men transformed by 48 Hua Ji and/or with sha: arguments and problems with

communication. Ju Men can also signify jealousy.

In the past, 23 Zuo Fu and/or 24 You Bi in spouse meant a man had a second or third

wife. Since that is not allowed today, it may mean divorce and remarriage (to

someone else) or affairs. If they are with peach blossom stars, it means that the spouse

will always be seeking someone else. These things are predicted anytime Zuo Fu

and/or You Bi are in the spouse palace, but are worse with 3 Tai Yang 10 Ju Men.

An interesting detail is that people with Tai Yang and Ju Men together in ming often

like to sleep naked.

married late in life or will never get married.

These two also have a strong effect if they are in the karma palace: the person

chooses the loneliness; they just don’t want to get married. They may choose to be a

monk or nun.

If these stars are in the Large or Small Cycle spouse palace, they cause problems

within a marriage: separation due to circumstances, sleeping alone. If affecting the

Large Cycle, it is hard to pass through, as the problem lasts a long time.

Analysis: Ms A’s lifetime ming is in the you palace. The Major Star is 7 Tian Fu 5. Tian

Fu is very accommodating, so she is not very selective in choosing friends and people

around her. Tian Fu also tends to be tall and big-boned. Combined with 40 Tian Yue, it

indicates that she is elegant.

The parents palace is also called the ‘appearance palace.’ She has 8 Tai Yin in

parents palace (in xu), so she is very pretty.

Ms A’s spouse palace is in wei:

It has two Major Stars: 1 Zi Wei and 14 Po Jun. Two stars in spouse tend to

signify a second marriage.

She also has 23 Zuo Fu and 24 You Bi, two helper stars. These are normally

‘helper’ stars, but in spouse they signify affairs or additional marriages. It is

likely she will have three or more husbands. If not, she is likely to have

multiple lovers.

She also has 57 Gua Su, a sleep alone star, in the spouse palace. Gua Su affects

the female more and this spouse palace is referring to a male. Nevertheless, it is

not a good star for any spouse palace.

17 Di Jie is one of the six sha.

In addition, she has too many stars here. In general, a marriage should be calm

and simple, represented by a spouse palace with few stars. When the spouse

palace is too busy, it signifies turbulence and complications in the marriage.

Her marriage(s) will be difficult.

To understand the situation better, we can look at the karma palace. Karma is the

root of whether you feel happy or not. She has 6 Lian Zhen 5 transformed by Hua Ji with

9 Tan Lang 5. These are the two strongest peach blossom stars and are always considered

a difficult combination. She also has 22 Ling Xing, one of the four sha. Together they

show that she wants to enjoy peach blossom regardless of the cost. Now it is clear that

her ‘busy’ spouse palace is not necessarily because of her husband; it is because she

wants it this way. Lots of ‘entertainment girls’ have this type of karma palace.

Ms A’s money palace (opposite karma in si) has 36 Lu Cun, so she can have money

all her life. However, this isn’t happy money. Her money comes from peach blossom,

from the stars reflected into the empty money palace from hai.

Note that Ms A has 4 Wu Qu and 13 Qi Sha together in mao, which is her travel

palace. People with this combination are susceptible to serious accidents if Hua Ji

transforms one of these stars. Watch the Large and Small Cycles for times when this may

cause trouble. (This detail is unrelated to the case presented here.)

If we look at the prognosis for Ms A’s love life over the Large Cycles, we can start

with 16-25 in the shen palace.

The palace stem for this ten year period is bing, the same as her birth year. Therefore,

the opposite palace (yin) has a double Hua Lu and a double Hua Ke, increasing their

effects. 5 Tian Tong 4 transformed by a double Hua Lu and 12 Tian Liang 1 are reflected

in from yin. With nice stars like these, it is likely that she can get married during this time.

In addition, 15 Wen Chang transformed by a double Hua Ke is opposite, so it has a strong

influence: she is likely to care about her looks and it adds some peach blossom.

The Hua Ji for this Large Cycle transforms 6 Lian Zhen, which is in property (hai),

so it has little effect on her marriage and happiness (even considering the palaces in the

three combinations relationship and the opposite palace).

Ms A got married at age 25 (1970, a geng xu year, after her birthday). Her Small

Cycle ming (in chen) has 3 Tai Yang transformed by Hua Lu.

One of the things we said above that could predict a marriage was “The Small Cycle

karma, ming, or spouse palace has peach blossom stars plus Hua Lu.”

Her Small Cycle ming (in chen) has Hua Lu (on Tai Yang) and 26 Tian Yao, a

peach blossom star.

Her spouse palace (in yin) has 15 Wen Chang transformed by a double Hua Ke.

It also has a double Hua Lu.

However, because it was a geng year, 5 Tian Tong in her spouse palace is

transformed by Hua Ji. Remember, we also said that “5 Tian Tong transformed by 48 Hua

Ji in karma, ming, or spouse of the Small Cycle” predicted peach blossom, which can

lead to marriage. However, Tian Tong Hua Ji also means heartbreak, so either Ms A or

her husband are likely to suffer some. Still, the Small Cycle spouse palace in yin has

mostly good stars, and a double Hua Lu and a double Hua Ke. All of this is able to

overwhelm the one Hua Ji. There will be some small trouble, but the outcome is mostly

good.

The next Large Cycle ming (26-35) is in wei:

Since the palace stem is yi, Zi Wei is transformed by Hua Ke in this same

palace, adding some peach blossom.

The Major Stars are 1 Zi Wei and 14 Po Jun. Because of Zi Wei, Ms A wants to

be treated like the emperor. 14 Po Jun signifies breaking. The marriage breaks.

57 Gua Su (especially bad for a female) keeps her from being close to her

spouse.

17 Di Jie takes away from any auspiciousness in the palace.

23 Zuo Fu and 24 You Bi aren’t peach blossom stars except in spouse, but in

the overall context of this chart, they may mean affairs, even in ming.

The spouse palace (in si) for this Large Cycle has no Major Stars, so 6 Lian Zhen 5

transformed by Hua Ji and 9 Tan Lang 5 are reflected in. These stars are especially bad in

the spouse palace due to their peach blossom nature, so this adds to the image of divorce.

Ms A got divorced in 1978 (a wu wu year, after her birthday) at age 33. Her Small

Cycle ming was in shen, so the spouse palace is in wu. Because of the wu stem year, 2

Tian Ji is transformed by Hua Ji and is located in the spouse palace along with 37 Qing

Yang. Tian Ji Hua Ji means instability and often divorce and Qing Yang also shows the

severing of the relationship.

Her Small Cycle karma palace in xu has 8 Tai Yin transformed by Hua Ji. This

shows that she is not calm and it may relate to peach blossom (Tai Yin brings peach

blossom).

During this Large Cycle, Ms A’s career palace is in hai with 6 Lian Zhen 5

transformed by Hua Ji and 9 Tan Lang 5. At this time, she worked in the ‘entertainment

field’ as a call girl.

At age 36-45, the Large Cycle ming is in the wu palace. 2 Tian Ji always means

some instability. 37 Qing Yang in ming means Ms A now holds the knife.

Because the palace stem of the Large Cycle ming is jia, 3 Tai Yang is transformed by

Hua Ji in spouse (chen). The spouse palace also includes 26 Tian Yao (peach blossom) 38

Tuo Luo (one of the four sha), 43 Jie Lu and 53 Tian Xu (emptiness stars). This is

obviously not good for men in her life.

The Large Cycle ming for 46-55 is in the si palace. This palace has no Major Stars

so 6 Lian Zhen 5 transformed by Hua Ji and 9 Tan Lang 5 are reflected in. Even at this

age, peach blossom has too strong an influence on her life. Because the palace stem of

her Large Cycle ming is gui, Tan Lang is also transformed by Hua Ji, making a double

Hua Ji in her ming. Therefore, the peach blossom only brings trouble.

Ms A’s spouse palace is in mao, 4 Wu Qu and 13 Qi Sha both are very strong stars

and have bad ratings. 18 Di Kong, one of the six sha is also here. She still cannot have a

comfortable relationship.

At the age of 56-65, Ms A’s Large Cycle ming is in chen. The palace stem is ren, so

the Four Transforming Stars are found based on that. Finally, the Hua Ji’s are not in

significant palaces and the excessive peach blossom stars do not have an effect. At last

Ms A can be happy.

Ms A has a bright 3 Tai Yang in ming (chen) with only one peach blossom star, 26

Tian Yao. While there are some sha and consuming stars in this palace, at least there is no

Hua Ji.

The spouse palace in yin has easy-going and pleasant stars (5 Tian Tong, 12 Tian

Liang, 15 Wen Chang) transformed by a double Hua Lu and a single Hua Ke. In her later

years, perhaps she can meet a nice man and settle down in a good relationship.

Note that it is not that peach blossom stars cause trouble in every chart. The problem

is that Ms A has excessive peach blossom mixed with sha in significant palaces. These

stars affect her for a large portion of her life. If there were fewer peach blossom stars and

less sha, Ms A could control her behavior better and bring less trouble upon herself. This

chart is so strong that Ms A is like a ship at sea being tossed about by a storm. The force

of it is beyond her control.

Analysis: This chart has some similarities to the previous one. All the Major Stars have

the same relationships with each other. This is because in the previous case, 1 Zi Wei was

in wei and in this chart, it is in chou; the charts are 180° off from each other, as if the

chart was rotated upside down. This will change the ratings, but the combinations of

Major Stars, such as 6 Lian Zhen and 9 Tan Lang, are the same. In addition, opposite

palaces and palaces in the three combinations relationships will be the same.

However, the lifetime mings in these two charts are in different palaces. The

previous chart had the ming in you with 7 Tian Fu. This chart has the ming in si with 6

Lian Zhen 5 and 9 Tan Lang 5. This combination is in Mr B’s lifetime ming, but was in

Ms A’s lifetime karma palace.

The minor stars in each palace are different, as the two people have different birth

data. You will see other similarities and differences as we analyze this chart.

Mr. B’s ming is in si. It has 6 Lian Zhen 5 and 9 Tan Lang 5. These are the two

strongest peach blossom stars. He will have charisma and women will like him, but it will

be hard for him to be faithful to any one person. This same combination is reflected into

hai, which is Mr. B’s Shen, the Body Palace, so he will not mature out of his peach

blossom lifestyle.

His spouse palace is in mao, with 7 Tian Fu 3, so his wife will accept him and

accommodate his affairs. She will be large boned, and a little tall. It also has 64 Tian

Shou, so there will be a big age difference. He is ten years older than she is.

Mr. B’s shen (the body palace) is in travel. This signifies that he likes to go out a lot

and is never at home. Also, when 21 Huo Xing is in ming or shen with no Major Stars, it

makes the person very temperamental and fast. (22 Ling Xing is similar, but Huo Xing is

always worse than Ling Xing.)

Note also that Mr. B has 15 Wen Chang and 16 Wen Qu together in the chou palace.

This is a very strong peach blossom combination. Even though it is in money, it is in the

three combinations relationship with his ming, which already has too much peach

blossom. It will also cause problems during various Large and Small Cycle periods when

it is in a significant palace.

Note that Mr. B (like Ms A) has 4 Wu Qu and 13 Qi Sha together. In this chart, they

are in you, which is his career palace. As we have said, people with this combination are

susceptible to serious accidents depending on the variations in the Large and Small

Cycles. We will revisit this issue later.

This is not related to the events of this case study but note that people with 5 Tian

Tong transformed by Hua Ji in the property palace should watch out for fire.

Let’s look at his luck through the Large Cycles. In his first Large Cycle (4-13), the

ming is in si, the same as his lifetime ming. Even though major peach blossom stars are

there, he is too young for this to matter. Let’s go on to the next Large Cycle.

In the second Large Cycle (14-23), Mr. B’s ming is in wu. There are no big problems.

You can tell by comparing the palace categories for this ten years with the location of the

Hua Ji’s and the palaces with the most difficult stars.

The stars in ming (wu) and opposite (zi) are decent.

Career (xu) has Hua Lu.

Money (yin) doesn’t look good because Hua Ji is reflected in from shen, but so is 36

Lu Cun and the Large Cycle Hua Lu. Good and bad are mixed but the good stars are

stronger than the bad.

Mr. B’s Large Cycle karma is in shen with the one Hua Ji that is reduced in strength

because it is with Hua Lu and 36 Lu Cun. These are the same stars we examined for the

money palace, which is opposite. Once again, good and bad are mixed but the good stars

are stronger than the bad. He can be fairly happy.

The spouse palace is in chen. It has a relatively dark 8 Tai Yin with a double Hua Ke.

This shows a beautiful woman with lots of peach blossom, but he is young and not ready

to settle down yet, so he can have fun with her.

The next Large Cycle (24-33) has ming in wei. The Major Star is 11 Tian Xiang with

a rating of 4. Tian Xiang doesn’t have a strong personality of its own. It takes on the

characteristics of the stars it is with. This palace also has 22 Ling Xing and 38 Tuo Luo,

two of the four sha.

The hai palace (career, in the three combinations relationship) adds 21 Huo Xing,

another of the four sha. 6 Lian Zhen 5 and 9 Tang Lang 5 are reflected into hai from the

opposite palace. This combination is not considered good, even if it is in a palace

unrelated to peach blossom. In career, this combination signifies some who would rather

play than work, someone who will rely on charm rather than substance. In addition, Tan

Lang is transformed by Hua Ji since the palace stem for wei, the ming of the Large Cycle,

is gui. This shows peach blossom with a bad outcome.

15 Wen Chang and 16 Wen Qu are opposite the Large Cycle ming, in chou.

All these stars influence Tian Xiang (Mr. B’s Major Star in ming) with peach

blossom qi and a lot of sha. Remember, Tian Xiang is the minister, not the emperor, so it

is accustomed to taking orders. It will take orders from the peach blossom stars and from

the sha.

Mr. B’s spouse palace (si) contains 6 Lian Zhen 5 and 9 Tang Lang 5 transformed by

Hua Ji as well as 29 Tian Wu, 51 Tian Kong, 56 Gu Chen, 75 Da Hao, all difficult stars.

There will be no satisfaction in marriage.

The karma palace (you) has strong stars: 4 Wu Qu and 13 Qi Sha, made even

stronger by Hua Quan. In addition, 37 Qing Yang in karma makes Mr. B very aggressive

and not very caring.

The next Large Cycle ming (34-43) is in shen. It has 5 Tian Tong 2 transformed by

Hua Ji and 12 Tian Liang with a low rating. Tian Tong means he will try to enjoy himself

and not work hard. 17 Di Jie is one of the six sha (and 18 Di Kong is opposite). 36 Lu

Cun is on the plus side, but overall, this is not a great ming.

The same stars are reflected into travel (yin).

Money and career (in the three combinations relationship) are not bad.

The spouse palace (wu) contains 10 Ju Men, which can show difficulty

communicating, but the rating is not bad. However, notice the palaces in the three

combinations relationship with spouse: yin and xu. Xu has the Large Cycle Hua Ji and

yin has the lifetime Hua Ji reflected in. Therefore, the spouse palace sees a double Hua Ji.

The Hua Ji in karma (xu) is somewhat counterbalanced by Hua Lu, but the karma

palace also sees the Hua Ji reflected into yin because these palaces are in the three

combinations relationship. One Hua Lu cannot overcome a double Hua Ji. We can

conclude that he is not happy.

Finally, we get to the Large Cycle for 44-53, with ming in you. 4 Wu Qu in ming is

transformed by Hua Quan. While Hua Quan is auspicious when it transforms mild stars,

it makes strong stars too strong. In addition, this palace has 13 Qi Sha with a low rating

and 37 Qing Yang. These are also very strong stars. In fact, Wu Qu and Qing Yang

together can be a powerful military officer.

Qing Yang or 33 Tuo Luo with 13 Qi Sha is very dangerous (especially with 6 Lian

Zhen, although that is not the case here). In addition, this ming palace has 25 Tian Xing,

heaven’s punishment, the executioner. Overall, this is a very strong, very tough palace.

In addition, this Large Cycle ming is in the three combinations relationship with si,

the palace that contains 6 Lian Zhen 5 and 9 Tan Lang 5. It is a very inauspicious ming.

Mr. B died in a car accident during this ten-year period, in 1984, a jia zi year. He

was 45 years old. His girl friend was in the same car, and she died too.

1984 was a jia zi year, so 37 Qing Yang was in mao, opposing the Large Cycle ming

in you. The you palace already had Mr. B’s permanent Qing Yang. In addition, the annual

38 Tuo Luo was in chou, in the three combinations relationship with you. When the

annual and permanent Qing Yangs and Tuo Luos gang up, disaster can occur.

Besides this, the current year Hua Ji (in xu) was in the three combinations

relationship with Mr. B’s Small Cycle ming (wu palace).

Analysis: This case study is not related to peach blossom or marriage, but it shows some

important concepts.

Mr. C has 12 Tian Liang in ming (also shen, the body palace), located in si. Tian

Liang in ming usually means the early life has difficulty, but it becomes easier later. This

is because Tian Liang represents an older person. Tian Liang is transformed by Hua Ke,

so he can make a name for himself in his later years. 38 Tuo Luo (one of the four sha)

means delays. This adds to the image of having a hard time in the beginning. Opposite, in

hai (travel) Mr. C receives no help, because 5 Tian Tong likes to relax and enjoy, and

because 17 Di Kong (emptiness) and 18 Di Jie (robbery) are a very strong combination

that consumes resources.

In addition, the travel palace has 49 Ming Ma and both ming and travel are in corner

palaces. This means a lot of movement, causing instability.

We can tell already that certain periods of time will be tough, since we know:

the early life is hard (12 Tian Liang)

there is instability (corners, 49 Ming Ma)

three of the six sha affect his ming (38 Tuo Luo, 17 Di Kong, and 18 Di Jie).

The lifetime career palace (you) has 62 Po Sui (break and shatter) and 75 Da Hao

(big consumer). Even though the Major Stars (reflected in from mao) are okay, the career

palace is far from perfect.

The lifetime money palace (chou) is always in the three combinations relationship

with ming. It has 3 Tai Yang with a low rating. Even though it is not in his parents palace,

a chart with an unhappy Tai Yang implies difficulties with men, with the father. 8 Tai Yin

is also in chou, but with a high rating. This implies that the father may die before the

mother, or at least the relationship with the father is worse than with the mother.

This palace (chou) was also Mr. C’s Small Cycle parents palace for age 6. This was

1934, a jia xu year, after his birthday. Since it was a jia year, 3 Tai Yang was transformed

by 48 Hua Ji (see the chart on the next page). In addition, 37 Qing Yang is opposite (wei),

so the knife is pointing at the parents palace. The chou palace also has 52 Tian Ku

(something to cry about). Mr. C’s father died that year. Since his father was not there to

help him, this helps to explain why Mr. C’s younger years will be more difficult.

Note that beyond looking at the stars in the parents palace, the status of 3 Yai Yang

and 8 Tai Yin also give a lot of information about the parents.

Since Mr. C is a yin male, the Large Cycle moves counterclockwise. The next Large

Cycle, for ages 13-22, is in chen. Here, he has 1 Zi Wei with the lowest rating and 11 Tian

Xiang 2. The emperor (Zi Wei) will be quite unhappy. He resents that he does not have

the power that an emperor should.

In addition, 16 Wen Qu is transformed by Hua Ji. This is a time when a young

person should be in school. Wen Qu represents a scholar, but because it is transformed by

Hua Ji, the scholar has problems. Mr. C dropped out of school during this time. This

combination could also signify a student who was not doing well in school.

The next Large Cycle, for ages 23-32, is in mao. The palace stem is ding, which

makes 10 Ju Men transformed by Hua Ji. Unfortunately, Ju Men is in Mr. C’s ming.

Sometimes it feels like Hua Ji follows a person around, appearing in significant palaces

during many time periods in a row.

Hua Ji affects all the stars in a palace. 2 Tian Ji is also there, and Tian Ji is afraid of

Hua Ji because it is already unstable and prone to excessive movement. 21 Huo Xing and

69 Xiao Hao add to the inauspiciousness. This period shows a lot of struggle and a lot of

movement (philosophically, the Chinese prefer stillness).

The ming of the next Large Cycle, for ages 33-42, is in yin. The palace stem is bing,

which makes 6 Lian Zhen transformed by Hua Ji. Unfortunately, this star is opposite

ming in shen. You can see how the bad stars have followed Mr. C around for 40 years.

9 Tan Lang is in ming. This means that 13 Qi Sha must be in career, and 14 Po Jun

must be in money (these three stars are always in the three combinations relationship with

each other). This combination signifies a time of change.

It turns out that this period is a turning point in Mr. C’s life when he can start to

change some things around him. If you look at career (wu) and money (xu), you see more

good stars than bad and they are unaffected by any Hua Ji. Even though Qi Sha and Po

Jun are stars of change, they have good ratings, and Mr. C could use a change in his life.

Note that Heaven Net (chen) and Earth Net (xu) can make it hard to break out, but Qi Sha

and Po Jun are strong and aggressive enough to break through. (Most stars cannot. For

example, 2 Tian Ji is restless in these palaces because it cannot move as much as it likes

to.) Mr. C has Po Jun in xu (Earth Net), so he is able to make change.

Tan Lang in ming is transformed by Hua Quan, which gives it power. 20 Feng Gao

and 42 Tian Fu also help him. 40 Tian Yue is opposite in travel (shen). 40 Tian Yue means

a woman will help. Since it is in travel, she is from far away. At this time, a rich lady

from Taiwan helped Mr. C in establishing his business.

The ming for the next Large Cycle, for ages 43-52, is in chou. The palace stem is

ding, which makes 10 Ju Men transformed by Hua Ji; finally Hua Ji is not in such a

prominent position. (Ju Men Hua Ji is in mao, karma, so he is not happy, but outwardly

things can improve.)

The palace stem of ding also makes 8 Tai Yin transformed by Hua Lu. Since Tai Yin

is in his ming and is a very good star for money, finally Mr. C has some good luck. Tai

Yin likes to receive (yin is inward movement), and Hua Lu enables it to do this. He

started to make good money at this age. His life will get better from here on.

The career palace (si) has Tian Liang Hua Ke, which shows a relatively high

position and being well known.

The money palace (you) is mixed. 2 Tian Ji transformed by Hua Ke and 10 Ju Men

transformed by Hua Ji are reflected in. Ju Men Hua Ji tends to signify lawsuits. The other

bad stars in you include 62 Po Sui and 75 Da Hao. However, the money palace is also

helped by 41 Tian Guan and 59 Long Chi. The money palace is not great, but it does see

one Hua Lu and two Hua Ke, which together outweigh the one Hua Ji.

Mr. C has not reached his peak yet, but life is getting better.

The ming for the next Large Cycle, for ages 53-62, is in zi. Here, Mr. C has the

perfect combination for making money: 4 Wu Qu transformed by Hua Lu with 7 Tian Fu.

36 Lu Cun is also shining in the opposite palace (wu). At this time, Mr. C became a

billionaire (in Taiwanese money).

The career palace (chen) has 1 Zi Wei (the emperor) together with 11 Tian Xiang

(the prime minister) so Mr. C can be powerful now. However, in the same palace, 16 Wen

Qu is transformed by Hua Ji, with the special meaning that he must be careful when

signing contracts.

The money palace (shen) has 6 Lian Zhen transformed by Hua Ji.

Ming now sees a double Hua Ji, but also a double Hua Lu. The double Hua Lu is

stronger because ming and travel have more influence than the three combinations

relationship. In addition, the Major Stars in ming are the perfect money-making

combination. We can conclude that Mr. C will make lots of money, but that he will still

have other difficulties in his life due to the two Hua Ji’s.

In this case, we can clearly see the concept of 12 Tian Liang having a hard time in

early life, but improving with age. Even if the later life is not perfect, it is much better

than the beginning.

Conclusion

To be good at Zi Wei Dou Shu takes a long time and a lot of experience; little by

little, we can improve our skills. There is a lot you can see in a reading, even if you have

only taken Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Zi Wei Dou Shu Classes. However,

over the course of the thousand year history (more or less) of this art, observers have

found many meanings for different star combinations. In this class we have presented a

number of these combinations, especially in regards to love and marriage.

You and I can continue the observation of star combinations and discover new ones.

Master Sang says if you find something significant that you attribute to a combination of

the stars, make a note of it. If you see the same thing again in another chart and the same

outcome occurs, pay close attention to it. If you find it to be true three times, it probably

is a special meaning of that star combination. So through our practice of Zi Wei Dou Shu,

we can continue developing the art.

In these three case studies, we have also seen how certain charts can present a lot of

difficulty in the early years. We can look through the Large Cycles one by one to find the

time when this person will finally have some “good luck.”

If you review the section called the “Twelve Palaces of Zi Wei” in the Beginning

Class Part 2, you can see that there are six sets of combinations of the Major Stars,

because half of the twelve variations are really just an upside-down version of another

chart. Within these six sets of combinations of the Major Stars, some combinations cause

a lot of trouble; once they are woven into a chart they come up again and again during

different time periods. Examples of these problematic combinations are 6 Lian Zhen and

9 Tan Lang, or 4 Wu Qu with 13 Qi Sha. In other charts, Hua Ji seems to follow a person

from Large Cycle to Large Cycle.

While there is no remedy for a problem in a Zi Wei Dou Shu chart, we can take

certain actions. We can moderate our behavior to reduce the strength of the problem.

When we enter a bad time, we can decrease risk-taking. We can use feng shui to bring us

to the high side of our potential. We can do good deeds for others. We can work hard for

our goals. We can remember what the Dao De Jing says in Chapter 3: “The reason I have

great suffering is that I have a living body; if I did not have a living body, what suffering

could I experience?”4 It is better to take life, along with its suffering, than not to

experience the marvels of heaven and earth.
