Introduction

The proper diagramming of a building is crucial for a Feng Shui analysis. How to do it is an art that cannot be found in any books. There is a lot of variation in the shape and layout of houses, so no source can cover every possibility. However, there are guidelines and principles. When these are combined with experience and common sense, the Feng Shui practitioner will be better able to perform an accurate reading. Besides the issue of the shape and layout of the house, there is another important issue. When do we use a three-by-three grid with nine palaces and when do we use a pie chart over the house?

Different teachers will have different answers because this is really an art. In this class, Master Sang will share his methods, based on the classical literature of Feng Shui and his decades of experience. Both the grid and the pie-chart have their uses. Which one to use for a certain function is an important “secret” of Feng Shui. It is not a secret because no one will tell you. It is a secret because there are many conflicting views, so a student is easily confused. If you are able to use both the grid and the pie-chart appropriately, you will be able to prepare a thorough and professional analysis of both the interior and the exterior of the house.

Center Point Guidelines

In order to examine the use of the pie-chart, first we need to find the center point of a house. The pie-chart radiates out from this center point. Besides finding the center of a house, you can also find the center of a room if you are going to use a mini pie-chart (discussed below). It is easy to find the center of symmetrical shapes such as a rectangle, square, or circle. For squares and rectangles, draw diagonal lines from corner to opposite corner. The center is the intersection of the two lines.

Page 7: American Feng Shui Institute...an important “secret” of Feng Shui. It is not a sec ret because no one will tell you. It is a secret because there are many conflicting views, so

Circular buildings are relatively rare, but they do exist.

For a circular building, draw an X across the circle. Each line of the X is called a diameter. The center is where the two diameters intersect.

Center Point Guidelines – Irregular Shapes

Many buildings have asymmetrical shapes. Irregular shapes present more of a challenge. Here are some guidelines for finding the center in irregular buildings, but each case must be judged separately. These principles also apply to finding the outline or ‘footprint’ of the nine-palace grid. If a building is missing only a small portion of a square or rectangular shape, less than 1/3 of the distance on each side, then treat it as the full square or rectangle.

The above diagram is treated like a rectangle. When finding the center point or drawing the grid, the missing part is treated as if it were there. The flying stars in the lower right section will cover less area because of the ‘missing’ space, but this is not inherently good or bad. If the star combination that has less space is 6-8, then it is an unfortunate loss. However, if the star combination there is 2-5, then no usable space is lost by the missing area. On the other hand, it is not really auspicious for a house to be missing the area of your personal trigram. For example, if you are a Xun person and the southeast is missing from your house, it will not be very supportive of you.

Page 9: American Feng Shui Institute...an important “secret” of Feng Shui. It is not a sec ret because no one will tell you. It is a secret because there are many conflicting views, so

Nine-Palace Grid and Pie-Chart Usage © 2009 American Feng Shui Institute 9

If an extension is small compared to the house as a whole, ignore it when determining the center.

Whether the protruding part is a closet or an entryway, it is not counted for finding the center or determining the grid because it is so small in proportion to the rest of the house. As for the grid, the qi in the lower right section would fill out the extra space:

Page 10: American Feng Shui Institute...an important “secret” of Feng Shui. It is not a sec ret because no one will tell you. It is a secret because there are many conflicting views, so

Nine-Palace Grid and Pie-Chart Usage © 2009 American Feng Shui Institute 10

Here is another example. How would you find the center? How would you grid it?

As a test, you can extend the outline of the building to the edge of the extension. If the extended part fills up the majority of the space, keep the larger outline of the house.

Here is what the grid would look like. The sections on the right have some missing area.

Page 11: American Feng Shui Institute...an important “secret” of Feng Shui. It is not a sec ret because no one will tell you. It is a secret because there are many conflicting views, so

Nine-Palace Grid and Pie-Chart Usage © 2009 American Feng Shui Institute 11

If more square footage is missing than covered, ignore it. Here the extended part is ignored when finding the center of the house.

As for the grid, the stars on the left-hand side of this diagram would fill out the extra space.

This is the way Master Sang chose to grid this diagram. The three sections of the grid on the right fill out the extended space. Let’s say this is a business and the extended area has display windows for people on the street to view. The whole front of the store is open extended area and no walls separate it. However, if internal walls divide up the extended space, the details of the grid depend somewhat on these internal walls.

Page 12: American Feng Shui Institute...an important “secret” of Feng Shui. It is not a sec ret because no one will tell you. It is a secret because there are many conflicting views, so

Nine-Palace Grid and Pie-Chart Usage © 2009 American Feng Shui Institute 12

An L-shaped building gets two center points. Here, the extension is more than 1/3 of one side, so it is too big for the qi to extend out and fill it. On the other hand, if you make one rectangle cover the whole building, too much is missing.

Make the first X on bigger section and the second X on smaller section. It will also have two grids. These two grids will have identical flying stars if the building is one unit that was all built at the same time. One unit will have only one sitting and facing, although there are a very few exceptions to this rule.

When the extension is borderline size: When an extension has no communication with the main part, it will always get a separate grid. For example if in the picture above, there is no doorway between the two parts, there is no question they should have separate grids. In other borderline cases, them more opening between the two sections, the more likely

Page 13: American Feng Shui Institute...an important “secret” of Feng Shui. It is not a sec ret because no one will tell you. It is a secret because there are many conflicting views, so

Nine-Palace Grid and Pie-Chart Usage © 2009 American Feng Shui Institute 13

the qi of the bigger one will flow into the smaller one. Sometimes it is really a judgement call. If the building is L-shaped but both parts are almost identical in size, then use the sitting side for the bigger X and the bigger grid. The sitting always has priority!

Page 14: American Feng Shui Institute...an important “secret” of Feng Shui. It is not a sec ret because no one will tell you. It is a secret because there are many conflicting views, so

In any area where you define a grid, you can also define a center point using two lines to make an X.

For example, an addition built at a different time will generally have a separate grid. It would also get its own center point. After you define the center point, then you make the grid.

Page 15: American Feng Shui Institute...an important “secret” of Feng Shui. It is not a sec ret because no one will tell you. It is a secret because there are many conflicting views, so

If a garage is within the square or rectangle, it is included in the grid and in finding the center.

If the garage sticks out from the house, it is not included or it gets a separate center and a separate grid. If the garage is not used as living space, it is not important to make a grid over it.

Page 16: American Feng Shui Institute...an important “secret” of Feng Shui. It is not a sec ret because no one will tell you. It is a secret because there are many conflicting views, so

Here are some other examples. In these cases, the missing part is relatively small in comparison to the whole.

Note that the sitting will never be the round side in cases like this. The sitting should always be stable and a round will can never be stable. The round will be the facing.

Page 17: American Feng Shui Institute...an important “secret” of Feng Shui. It is not a sec ret because no one will tell you. It is a secret because there are many conflicting views, so

In a really irregular shaped house, you can compromise in drawing the grid and finding the center. In the above example, some parts stick out and some parts are missing. The compromise uses a logical line, following one of the existing walls and the protruding parts are approximately equal to the missing parts.

The protruding parts will be filled out by the flying stars in the adjacent section of the grid.

Making the Grid

After you find the center point, it is time to make the grid. We have had many examples above, but let’s go through step by step. The grid will be based on the outline you used to find the center.

Of course, making a grid on a square or rectangle is easy and intuitive.

Page 19: American Feng Shui Institute...an important “secret” of Feng Shui. It is not a sec ret because no one will tell you. It is a secret because there are many conflicting views, so

This diagram has an extended area in the northwest (if you count the south as the top). The flying stars in the northwest would fill out the larger space.

Here, the southeast section is missing, but since it is a third or less of each of its two sides, we still make one large grid over the whole house.

Here, we have part of the southeast section missing, but some of the southwest section is still there.

Page 20: American Feng Shui Institute...an important “secret” of Feng Shui. It is not a sec ret because no one will tell you. It is a secret because there are many conflicting views, so

Nine-Palace Grid and Pie-Chart Usage © 2009 American Feng Shui Institute 20

Here are some more difficult examples: This one makes a compromise between the missing part and the extension:

Even though the lines are curved, this is simply a little missing space.

Page 21: American Feng Shui Institute...an important “secret” of Feng Shui. It is not a sec ret because no one will tell you. It is a secret because there are many conflicting views, so

Nine-Palace Grid and Pie-Chart Usage © 2009 American Feng Shui Institute 21

Although two parts are missing, we still have one large grid because the missing parts are relatively small.

Page 22: American Feng Shui Institute...an important “secret” of Feng Shui. It is not a sec ret because no one will tell you. It is a secret because there are many conflicting views, so

If a house is a parallelogram, there are a few options. At first you might try the following:

But now there is too much missing space. You could then try a compromise:

But if it is a true parallelogram with sides of equal length, the grid can adapt to the space.

When the sides are not parallel, you must compromise, as the grid cannot adapt to the angles of the walls.

Page 23: American Feng Shui Institute...an important “secret” of Feng Shui. It is not a sec ret because no one will tell you. It is a secret because there are many conflicting views, so

The Nine-Palace Grid versus the Pie-Chart

Up until this point, we have discussed finding the center, making the grid, and dealing with missing and protruding areas. Now we will begin discussing the use of the pie-chart. But why do we divide up the house in two different ways? This is a controversial topic. Some teachers do not use the grid at all. They only use the pie-chart, inside and outside of the house. They say that the grid is inaccurate and that the old masters never used it. They say the old illustrations appeared to use a grid because the authors of the old books were not skilled enough at graphics to draw the pie-chart. This is not the case. At least since the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), books on Chinese medicine contained many circular diagrams. Here are some circular or pie-chart diagrams from Master Shen’s Xuan Kong Studies,1 probably the most important text on Xuan Kong Feng Shui, published at the end of the Qing dynasty (The Qing dynasty ended in 1911.):

1 《沈氏玄空學》

You can see, if the authors of the old Feng Shui books wanted to use circular diagrams or pie-charts, they could have done it.

Page 25: American Feng Shui Institute...an important “secret” of Feng Shui. It is not a sec ret because no one will tell you. It is a secret because there are many conflicting views, so

Here are two different flying star charts from the same book. While the outline of the house is not drawn and the nine palaces are not separated by grid lines in these diagrams, they are clearly made as a square, not a pie-chart. This is typical in the old books.

The old books do not state whether you should use a grid or a pie-chart. We can only use our experience, our understanding of the qi, and the diagrams in the old books to determine how to apply the flying stars. Different teachers come to different conclusions. This class is based, of course, on Master Sang’s teachings and experience. Qi is frequently compared to water. When water is put into a container, it takes the shape of its container. The same thing happens when qi is contained within a building. Most buildings are square or rectangular. Even those that are not are mostly made up of right angles. The qi inside fills out the shape of the building and becomes square too. In a totally square building with no internal walls, the qi would break up exactly into a nine palace grid. If there are internal walls, they can to some degree affect the size of the eight outer palaces, making some a little larger and others a little smaller. Nevertheless, inside the house, the nine flying stars will break out into nine palaces. However, outside of the house, there are no walls to contain the qi. The eight directions or the 24 directions now radiate out like the pie-chart. It is more related to direction than space. So generally, inside the house we use the grid (because we are mapping space) and outside of the house we use the pie-chart (because we are determining direction more than space). There is one other time we can use the pie-chart. In Feng Shui we also have personal stars, such as the consuming direction, the peach blossom direction, the money direction, sleep-alone direction, etc. These stars are usually based on the person’s birth information, not on the house itself, and are located using the pie-chart. They also relate to direction, not space. Some of these personal directions will be mentioned here but are discussed in more detail in classes such as Day Selection 2, Feng Shui Case Study 3, and Feng Shui Case Study 7.

Deviation between Pie-Charts and Nine-Palace Grids

Whether you advocate the use of the pie-chart or the nine palaces, it is obvious that there can be a big difference between the two as to which stars are exist in a specific location. With a square house, the pie-chart and the grid come out pretty similar.

But if the house is rectangular or another irregular shape, the grid and pie-chart do not match at all. So where you open a door can make a big difference.

Look at the east-west system. If you use the grid, you know to keep a zhen person (east group) out of the gen section (west group) on the east wall. If you use the pie-chart, you might think it is okay to put an east group person anywhere along the east wall.

Page 27: American Feng Shui Institute...an important “secret” of Feng Shui. It is not a sec ret because no one will tell you. It is a secret because there are many conflicting views, so

Nine-Palace Grid and Pie-Chart Usage © 2009 American Feng Shui Institute 27

Below is a reverse house. First, put water in front and mountain in back to fix its reverse nature. If we were designing or remodeling the house, the door would likely be placed in west area as the qi of 6-1 is much better than the other stars on the facing side. In a square house, there is a small margin for error based on the difference between the grid and the pie-chart:

G to S (82.5-97.5°°°°)

(卯山酉向 mao sitting, you facing) Period 6

If we look at the same chart for a house that is rectangular, not square, there is a much greater chance of putting the door in the wrong place using the pie-chart. The pie-chart would indicate that the door can be put anywhere on the western side of the house, but in fact it should be in the 6-1 section of the grid.

If the door ends up in the southwest with a 1-5 combination, it could cause drug abuse, or kidney and blood problems. The 5-9 in the northwest causes malicious peach blossom or other bad feedback. In this house, you could easily make a big mistake using the pie-chart.

When reading a house, put the grid over the floor plan and flow the flying stars. Then put the pie-chart on based on the center. This is for reading the outside of the house. The grid on the inside is more important. Things must be good from inside. The pie-chart is used for the outside. Look outside the house for buildings, mountains, roads, water etc. Things outside stir up the qi inside. See which stars are located in that direction. These stars will be activated by the objects outside. If stars inside are good or strong then good things will occur. If the stars are bad and in the death phase of their cycle, waking them up brings bad things. The closer the outside objects are to the house and the bigger they are, the more impact they will have. When the stars inside the house are bad, it is important to cancel them with remedies right away (for example, add moving metal if there is a 2-5 combination inside the house). This will prevent outside objects from triggering the bad qi inside the house. Of course, the objects outside could be beautiful or they could be sha. The stars on the inside could be beneficial or harmful. Sha in the direction of harmful stars will be especially negative, but even a beautiful tree nearby could activate inauspicious stars. In the old days one had to be careful where the well was placed in relation to the house, depending on the Feng Shui. Even trees should be carefully placed. Dead trees will have an especially bad influence.

For example, if there is a tall building or a tree to the southwest according to the pie-chart, check the flying stars in this direction.

Besides looking for sha or other big objects outside, we can also use the pie-chart for locating personal stars. In this case, the pie-chart is used inside the house. Here is how: use the pie-chart inside the house to find where the direction of the door. In this example, the main entrance is in Xun (J), part of the southeast. There is also a back door in hai (W), part of the northwest. Where are the other two doors?

One door is in Gen (D), part of the northeast, and the other is in Geng (R), part of the west.

The direction of the door is used for personal stars. So is the direction of the bed. The syllabus of this class does not include the details of all the various personal stars, but in order for you to understand how to use the pie-chart, we will use the consuming door as an example. If you want to know more about the personal stars, please see the Day Selection 2, Feng Shui Case Study 3, and Feng Shui Case Study 7 classes. The consuming door is a door that opposes your year of birth. This is based on the twelve branches (or twelve animals).2 Check the following table to find your birth year and your consuming direction:

Birth Year Consuming Direction Zi - rat Wu - horse m Chou - ox Wei - sheep o Yin - tiger Shen - monkey q Mao - rabbit You - rooster s Chen - dragon Xu - dog u Si - snake Hai - pig w Wu - horse Zi - rat a Wei - sheep Chou - ox c Shen - monkey Yin - tiger e You - rooster Mao - rabbit g Xu - dog Chen - dragon i Hai - pig Si - snake k

As always, begin the birth year with February 4th. If, according to the pie-chart, an entrance that is used falls into your consuming direction, it will drain your time and money. Even if you personally do not use your consuming door but others do, it will still affect you as it brings consuming qi into your house. You can use the pie-chart for the whole house (from the center of the house) or use a mini pie-chart for the bedroom (from the center of the bedroom). Note that only directions associated with the twelve branches can be consuming directions. In the house above, three of the four doors cannot be consuming doors for anyone. The main entrance is Xun (J), a trigram, not a branch. So is the side door in Gen (D). The other side door in Geng (R) is associated with a stem, so it also is not a consuming door. Only the back door is a potential problem. It is associated with Hai (W) which is the pig direction. If someone born in the snake (si) year lives there, this will be a consuming door for them, although others will be unaffected. There is no remedy for a consuming door

2 For more on stems and branches, see our Stems and Branches Class. The consuming door explained in more detail in Day Selection 2.

except to avoid its use. In this case, all the occupants of the house should try to use the other three doors and avoid the back door so that the one snake person is not affected. Doors mostly govern receiving or losing money. Besides the consuming door, there are directions for a door that will bring you money. Here is how you find your money direction for the door:

Birth Year Stem (year ends in…) Money Direction Jia (year ends in 4) Yin (D) Yi (year ends in 5) Mao (G) Bing (year ends in 6) Si (K) Ding (year ends in 7) Wu (M) Wu (year ends in 8) Si (K) Ji (year ends in 9) Wu (M) Geng (year ends in 0) Shen (Q) Xin (year ends in 1) You (S) Ren (year ends in 2) Hai (W) Gui (year ends in 3) Zi (A)

As always, begin the birth year with February 4th. So a person born in 1976 (year ends in 6) was born in a Bing stem year and their money direction is Si (K on the luopan, part of the southeast). If the door in their house opens in this direction, it will be very easy for them to increase their income, even if the house is not otherwise very supportive for money. Others in the house will not receive this benefit. The above house has the back door in Hai (W). A person born in a Ren stem year (a year that ends in 2 such as 1952, 1962, 1972, etc.) will be able to receive more money in this house. If you have not taken the Stems and Branches Class, this may seem a little mysterious. You can still use the above tables without understanding what they mean. But if you want to know more, the Stems and Branches Class will answer your questions. You can also find the direction of your bed from the center of the bedroom. Bed direction is useful for things like bringing or stopping peach blossom or having babies. These personal stars are discussed in detail in the classes mentioned above. To summarize, the pie-chart is used for two things: the external environment and for personal stars.

Now let’s look at the big grid and the mini grid and the big pie-chart and the mini pie-chart. There is always one large grid or pie-chart for a building as a whole. If the building is divided into units, there is a smaller grid or pie-chart for each unit,

which may have a separate sitting and facing from the building as a whole. If a building is not divided into units, you may still take a room or suite of rooms

and give it a smaller grid or pie-chart, but this will have the same sitting and facing as the building as a whole.

The same goes for a room or suite of rooms within a unit; its sitting and facing will match the unit’s.

Here is the floor plan for the upstairs of the same building we have been discussing. How would you grid it?

Page 37: American Feng Shui Institute...an important “secret” of Feng Shui. It is not a sec ret because no one will tell you. It is a secret because there are many conflicting views, so

This will need two grids, one for the main part, and one for the master bedroom suite, most of which juts out. One grid over the whole floor would have too much missing space. The part that sticks out is too big to simply be an extension of one section. The closet and the master bathroom are included in the grid for the master bedroom. Notice that there is only one doorway into the master suite and there is no way for the qi of the main grid to spread into the area of the closet and bathroom except through the door into the master bedroom. However, the qi of the master bedroom can easily seep into the closet and bathroom. So the closet and master bath primarily have the qi of the smaller grid that is over the bedroom. However, let’s say that the doorway to the master bedroom needs fire element according to the stars of the smaller bedroom grid. Note that it is both in the space of the larger grid for the floor and the grid for the bedroom suite. If there is a 2-5 combination in this area from the larger grid, you cannot add the fire, even though it is indicated for the smaller grid. In other words, the area that overlaps primarily will belong to one of the two grids, but the other grid must still be taken into account. Apply the remedy for its primary grid unless it is very harmful according to the stars of the secondary grid.

Here is the pie-chart for the main part of the upstairs, place according to the center of the house:

Here is the pie-chart for bedroom (from center of bedroom). This is used for the pillow direction, the bedroom door, etc. We want to avoid the lonely pillow direction for the bed. We also still want to avoid a consuming door.

Note that the office door to the outside is in the zi (a, north) slice of the pie chart. It is irrelevant that the door is facing the northeast.

Let’s clarify a few details. An outside feature (for example, a fountain) can be in different directions for several nearby buildings:

Here, the water feature is to the north of building B, to the northwest of building A, and to the northeast of building C.

*** If there are houses is a row with sha (such as a dead tree) on one side as in the illustration below, the sha will affect C but not A or B. Houses A and B cannot directly see the sha, as House C acts like a buffer. Each townhouse will have its own pie-chart.

Page 41: American Feng Shui Institute...an important “secret” of Feng Shui. It is not a sec ret because no one will tell you. It is a secret because there are many conflicting views, so

In this diagram, imagine that the owner sleeps in the bedroom in the northeast and enters through the front door, NOT the garage in the southwest. Outdoor Sha A will have a smaller effect on him or her than Sha B. This is because Sha B directly affects the stars in the bedroom (5-7) where the owner spends a lot of time. Sha A has a big impact on the garage, but if this is not used a lot, the occupants will not feel it strongly. The effects of the sha can be predicted. Sha A may cause injury to young people or broken limbs if people enter through the garage, because that is the result of an unremedied 8-4 combination. Sha B will tend to cause arguments, sickness, and diseases related to the mouth as predicted by a 5-7 combination.

The stars in a missing area still have some effect. For example, even if a 2-5 section is a missing area because the building has an irregular shape, sha outside from the 2-5 direction will bring trouble.

A classroom

The two doors into the classroom are from the inside of a building, not the outside. One door goes into a hall and the other goes into an office. The windows are the only place where yang qi can enter the building, so they are the facing.

Let’s put the stars on the floor plan:

Neither entrance has good stars. The 3-2 can bring lawsuits, arguments, or gossip. The 9-5 can bring other disasters, including eye problems. At least the teacher is likely to stand in an area with a 4-1 (good for scholarship) or a 8-6 (good overall).

Now let’s look at the pie-chart.

Here, one of the doors is in Xun (J) which is not a branch, so it will not be a consuming door or a money door. The other door is mostly in the shen branch (Q, monkey) direction. For a person born in a yin branch (tiger) year, this is their consuming direction. For a person born in a geng stem year (a year ending in 0), this is a money door.

An office

Here is an office suite within a larger office building. There is an original grid for the building as a whole. This building may have a different sitting and facing than the office suite in question. This office faces to the left of the page where the windows are located. The entrance is from the inside of the building, a hallway that is more yin than the light from outside streaming through the big windows. A smaller grid can be placed over the suite as a whole using its own sitting and facing.

Page 49: American Feng Shui Institute...an important “secret” of Feng Shui. It is not a sec ret because no one will tell you. It is a secret because there are many conflicting views, so

Nine-Palace Grid and Pie-Chart Usage © 2009 American Feng Shui Institute 49

An even smaller mini-grid can be put over an office within the suite, in this case, the office for the president of the company. The office must have the same sitting and facing as its suite.

Page 50: American Feng Shui Institute...an important “secret” of Feng Shui. It is not a sec ret because no one will tell you. It is a secret because there are many conflicting views, so

Nine-Palace Grid and Pie-Chart Usage © 2009 American Feng Shui Institute 50

You can use this mini-grid in a room for placement, but place remedies based on the bigger grid for the whole suite.

We can see that the office in question is mostly in the 1-4 and 6-8 qi for the suite as a whole (blue grid), although the right side of the office in this picture has some 9-5 qi too. We can put metal in the part of the office with the building’s 9-5 qi. Now, we should place the desk so that the president sits mainly in the 8-6 area of his office’s mini-grid (red grid). While it might be preferable for him to sit so he could better see the door, then his body would be in the less favorable 1-4 qi or quite bad 9-5 qi. This way, he is also sitting in the suite’s 6-8 qi (blue grid), not the suite’s 1-4 qi.

Here is a larger view of the same office inside the suite. The grid is placed on and the center is marked with a small square.

And here it is with the flying stars in the mini-grid.

Now we have the same office within the suite with the pie-chart laid on top.

Page 54: American Feng Shui Institute...an important “secret” of Feng Shui. It is not a sec ret because no one will tell you. It is a secret because there are many conflicting views, so

Nine-Palace Grid and Pie-Chart Usage © 2009 American Feng Shui Institute 54

While it may be a little hard to see, the door is mostly in the yi stem (H, part of east) and chen branch (I, part of southeast) directions. The stem at the door makes little difference as we use the branches for the consuming or money direction. Having a door in chen (dragon) would be a consuming door for a person born in a xu (dog) year. So even with the president sitting in an 8-6 area, this would not be a good office for a person born in a dog year. The money direction never falls on the chen branch, so the door does not bring any special financial advantage, regardless of the year of birth.

Here is an interesting question that was asked when Master Sang taught this class in our classroom: Question: Can houses that have an open courtyard in the center get locked? Answer: Those were expensive houses in old China. They are never locked because the wang qi can enter through the center, through 天心 heaven’s heart. All qi originally came from heaven’s heart when the house was built. Once the house is sealed by putting on the roof, the stars in the center cannot communicate with the qi outside, unless the center is open like this. When the wang star is located in one of the eight outside sections of the house, it can receive strength from the wang qi outside, through the windows or doors. If the wang star is in the center of a house with no central opening, it cannot resonate with the wang qi outside, and the house becomes locked. With an open courtyard, the stars in the center are not obstructed from communicating with the universe, so they do not become locked. For example, a house built in Period 7, sitting hai (W) and facing si (K) has a center potential of 8-6. Now in Period 8, it is locked for people in most houses. However, if this were the chart of a house with an open courtyard, it would not be locked as the wang 8 in the center has access to the wang qi of Period 8 out in the universe.

Even in a house with an open courtyard, the potential of the house is still found in the center stars. The fact that the central space is not filled in does not diminish the power of the central stars, as these are like the DNA of the house. This type of house would get one grid for the whole unless it is broken into different units.

You can make a transparency of this diagram and then lay it over the floor plan of a building. Make sure to align the directions properly according to the orientation of the building.

Other notes from the class: 1. A person’s house is the root while his or her office is the branch. When you read an office and find that the Feng Shui is acceptable but the business is still not doing good, check the Feng Shui of the owner’s home. 2. Master Sang does NOT use this: Some judge the auspiciousness of the different stories (floors) of a building. It varies for different people based on He Tu (河圖, River Map) numbers.

If your personal trigram is Kan (water), then 1st and 6th floors (water) and 4th and 9th floor (metal) are good for you in theory. In other words, the element of the floor should be the same element as your personal trigram, or of the element that produces the element of your personal trigram.

3. Master Sang DOES use the sitting of the house in relation to the personal trigram: The house sitting should be same element or productive to personal trigram. A Kan (water) person should live in a Kan, Dui or Qian house if possible. However, among these choices, a Kan house is best (most comfortable) as it is East Group, same as the person.

Conclusion

We hope this has clarified any questions you have about the pie chart and the nine-palace grid. We also hope you feel more confident about making a grid for irregular shaped houses. The summation of the major ideas in this class is as follows: We use the grid inside the house for determining the qi (stars) of various locations. We use the pie-chart outside the house to see the direction of various landmarks

from the center of the house. We use the pie-chart inside the house to determine the direction of doors, beds,

desks, etc., from the center of the house or from the center of the room. These directions can affect individuals based on their birth information.

While not discussed in this class, we also use the pie-chart in Yin House Feng Shui (grave-siting) as here we are concerned with directions, not space.

The grid is used for space inside a house. The pie chart is used for direction from a center-point (of a building or a room). There are a number of guidelines for placing the grid over an irregular house.

。 One grid may be used if there is only a little missing or protruding from a building.

。 If a lot of space will protrude or wind up missing from one grid, the house will need multiple grids.

This class is very practical. It will make your readings more accurate and help with placement of remedies in precisely the right place.
