his is turning out to be a very exciting year. With the success o the

National Championships behind us we are now looking orward to

the IDSF Adult World Latin Championships, which USA Dance is

co-organizing on November 13th in New York City, and the rst USA Dance

National Ballroom Dance Cruise, departing Florida on November 28th. Visit

www.usadance.org or a link to the websites or these not-to-be-missed events.

Members o your Governing Council are working hard not only on these

stellar events, but to prepare or meetings coming up later this year. USA

Dance belongs to several important organizations, and key members attend

their unctions every year. Te meeting o the International DanceSport

Federation took place in June. Te National Dance Council o America meets

in July and the USOC General Assembly takes place in September.

Additionally, USA Dance conducts meetings and training sessions o its

own. Te DanceSport Council will hold its annual meeting in August, where

rulebook issues are addressed, new initiatives are debated and on-going

DanceSport programs are evaluated. In September a training session will be

ofered to our new group o Area Coordinators to assist them in their chapter

support unctions. Tis training session will be in conjunction with the Social

Dance Council meeting, where planning will take place on new and continuing

social dance initiatives. In October, the entire Governing Council will convene

or its annual meeting to review our progress this year and to plan or next year.

As o this writing I have been in the presidency or almost seven months,

and I have ound the job to be both rewarding and rustratingrewarding

when I see what our group o volunteers is able to accomplish, and rustrating

when we are not able to do more because o a lack o time or resources.

Tose o us on the Governing Council get deeply involved in all the activities

taking place at the national level, and it is sometimes easy to orget that it is at

the chapter level that so much o the good work o our organization takes place.

One o the pleasures o my job is receiving chapter newsletters, either through

the mail or by e-mail, and I continue to be impressed by the variety o enjoyable

and creative activities sponsored by our 170 plus chapters.

For example, the Heartland IN Chapter, #2022 had racing as the theme o

its May dance, complete with black and white checkered tablecloths and other

    racing decorations.

Meanwhile, the Richmond, VA Chapter #6006 reported a social dance that

drew 20 youth dancers. Tis chapter set a goal specically to recruit 30 youth

members in 2010 and has already exceeded it by recruiting 33 youth social dancers

and competitors. Te ri-Cities, VA Chapter #6060 celebrated a members

birthday at their May dance, complete with birthday cake. By the way, these two

chapters publish a combined newsletter, allowing them to double the news while

    splitting publication costs.

Both the Pasco County, FL Chapter #6090 and the reasure Coast, FL Chapter

#6004 welcomed the 4H Ballroom Bicycle Brigade to their recent dances. Tis is

the only 4H club in the country involved in ballroom dancing. When they are not

dancing they are bicycling, and these youth dancers were given a donation toward

their bicycle tour ollowing the Underground Railroad route rom Alabama to

    Canada.

Tis is just a sample o the chapter news that crossed my desk this past month.

Tese kinds o activitiesthematic decorations that celebrate location or events,

recognition o members birthdays, encouraging youth membership and inviting

young dancers to perorm at social dancesconnect a chapter to the surrounding

community and energize the members, giving them continued reasons to return

or the camaraderie and the enjoyable times they nd at chapter events.

Many o our chapters are doing similar things. Keep the news comingits

wonderul to read about all the creative ways our chapters are promoting ballroom

dancing in local communities across America.

    USA D Drtor Hhlht

he new Districts or USA Dance are launched

    and the Regions are gone.

Because o national bylaw changes, the Social

Dance Division o USA Dance was reorganized

to create a more unction-based structure in lieuo the regional structure that prevailed in USA

Dance, as well as to provide more support or our

chapter boards and to enhance the liaison with the

national volunteers who are driving USA Dance.

New director positions also appointed by the

National President replaced the six Region Vice

    Presidents positions:

    Chapter Liaison, Administrative Support

K-12 Student Programs and College Network.

he K-12 Student Programs and College Network

replaced the ormer Youth College Network

    (YCN) Division.

As the Director o Chapter Liaison, I serve

as a liaison to the chapters, working through

area coordinators to advise and assist chapters

as needed. he Director o Chapter Liaison and

the eleven District Area Coordinators are voting

members o the Social Dance Council lead by Jean

Krupa, Vice President o Social Dance. Charles

Hardin was appointed as Assistant Director o

    Chapter Liaison.

We implemented 11 districts to replace the

six regions to balance the work load or our

volunteers so that we more eectively service

and grow social dance. Formerly, the regions and

the Region VPs had as ew as 12 to as many as 62

chapters assigned. Now the districts average 14

21 chapters each with each coordinator assigned 4

    to 8 chapters each.

In each district a District Leadership eam is

assigned, consisting o an Area Coordinator and two

Assistant Area Coordinators . Nearly 33 USA Dance

chapter members have accepted an appointment by the

Executive Council to the district positions.

We thank them or the time they will invest to assist

USA Dance to develop and grow at the chapter and

    national level.

he coordinators are experienced USA Dance board

Membership CampaignBy: J KrupSol D VP

he USA Dance Membership Campaign willbegin September 1, 2010 and we invite you tojoin in recruiting new members to enjoy all othe benets o membership.

Tere are almost 25,000 members o USA Dance but

many dancers out there do not realize the benets obelonging to USA Dance and what we do to promote

ballroom dancing. Encourage them to join us andincrease our numbers. We want to do more, and withyour help and continued support and participation we

    can!

Become part o the team that encourages ballroomdancing around the country. Join USA Dance as we

reach out across America, encourage everyone toparticipate in ballroom dancing or physical health, mental health and new riendships.

    Suggestions or a Succesul Campaign

Beore starting your local drive, select a eamCaptain or your chapterTe chapter increasing theirmembership by the greatest percentage, not necessarilygreatest number o members recruited, will be awarded.

Ten survey existing members and identiy

their reasons or becoming and staying membersand use their testimonies in promotional materials

and advertising. Involve your current members in

the campaignask them or new member prospectreerralsor reward the members who recruit

the highest number o new members. Considersimultaneously running an existing member retention

campaign to recognize loyal member support.

Plan a kicko event to announce the campaign andshowcase the benets o belonging to your organizationand oer an early-bird membership discount. Tis

event can also serve as an annual und-raiser with

collateral events, such as a banquet, auction, etc. Haveexisting members receive a discounted admission i

    they bring additional prospects.

A credit reward incentive program should be able

to do two things: encourage past recruiting members torecruit even more; and encourage those who have never

recruited to try. Instead o actual money, recruitersearn credits that can be used towards ree admission todances. Also consider giving the recruiter one chance

per new member in a drawing or a grand prizemorenew members, more chances to win.

At the event, have name badges or all members

and a dierent color name badge or those who areguests. Members can then easily identiy each guest, introduce themselves and help to make them welcome.

Ater all, that is what being a dancer all is about.

Give each guest a packet that contains inormationabout USA Dance, about your chapter (including namesand phone numbers or email addresses o ocers)

your latest newsletter, the benets o membership,(discounts or admission, National magazine, etc.) and

    an application orm.

Te president and membership chair should keepin touch with those guests who have not become

members and nd out why not. It is important toidentiy why they do not want to join.

Dont orget to check the document library or otherideas, promotional brochures and literature on the

value o membership in USA Dance to aid in yourcampaign to help us make USA Dance bigger and betterthan ever.

When the Los Angeles chapter o USADance hosts a dance, it does it with styleand panache. For the LA chapter, a danceis more than just a dance: its an event. Its not even justan event, its something you want to tell everyone about

because its a party you dont want to miss.

So what makes it so big and exciting?

Hosted in the 7,000 square oot Culver City VeteransMemorial Auditorium, each event brings dancers andrst-timers alike rom all over. And its not just the

large venue, the largest ballroom foor in the region, the

comortable atmosphere and antastic rereshments. Te

LA chapter has the added benet o being, well, LA. Andthat means celebrity guests like Edyta liwiska, Anna

rebunskaya, and Jonathan Roberts rom Dancing withthe Stars, as dance instructors or their ree lesson.

Tese big dances are part o why the LA Chapter iscurrently so successul.

One thing that people may not know is that the LA

chapter is one o USA Dances astest growing chapters,as well as one o its largest. Part o that success comes

rom the dierent ways that the LA Chapter reachesout to people in the community. With more than 2,000people on their email list, marketing or the chapters

events is very eective. Tis intense marketing leads tohigh attendance at events, which in turn leads to morenew members per event.

We really ocus on social dancers. Because our ballsare events, we attract people that come to these things as

their rst exposure to ballroom dance, said Livia Squires,Public Relations Director.

Te LA chapter has also spent a lot o time and

eort in developing ties with the local community andlocal dance studios. In act, the LA Chapters websitepublishes a listing o all the dierent studios in the LA

County area. One o the LA Chapters goals has been toact as a central hub or dancing in the area, a place where

studios can come together and share dancing. Otherstudios come to our dances and get tables; they come as a

social outing to our dances and make it an event or theirorganization. said David Spetner, President o the LAChapter.

Te LA Chapter sets an example in its K-12 andsenior outreach programs the LA chapter sponsors.

We sponsor schools in primarily economicallyunderprivileged parts o townthe idea being that inthose areas parents wouldnt be able to pay or lessons.

It gives kids an opportunity to dance, and we haveworked with the Los Angeles Unied School District to

nd schools that would benet rom this, said Squires.Meanwhile, the Senior Outreach program perorms orseniors in assisted living homes, bringing smiles and

    much enjoyment to all.

With Nationals recently held in LA, spirits in the LAChapter are high. Beyond large dances, the LA chapter

takes pride in their roots as part o USA Dance. Members

are supportive o the goals o USA Dance.

I dont think there are any large non-prot ballroomorganization other than us, said Spetner, Much like the

rest o USA Dance, there is a lot o pride in being part othis whole.

    In the all

    o 1995,bandleader Johnny

    Catron summed up his lie

by saying, I was born on September 24,1916. I worked as a salesman selling automobiles or 36years. I had a band or 40 some years and wrote a ew

good songs. Not bad or a guy that never knew what hewanted to do when he grew up!

Johnny Catron was a personal riend o mine when

we lived in Rialto, Caliornia or a ew years. Ourriendship was almost instantaneous once I discoveredthat Johnny was a bandleader. At the time, I was a writer

and cartoonist or a magazine called Te Big Bands, headquartered in Southern Caliornia. Johnny took me

under his wing (I was a transplanted young easternerrom Philadelphia), and he appointed me as his PublicRelations Director. Tis was a dream job or someone

who loved the sounds o the big bands. Te job entailedattending all his concerts and dances and generally

publicizing the orchestra. Tis assignment lasted until

personal business took me back to the east.

Ater World War II, Johnny Catron had nancialproblems and could not raise the money to reorganize a

band such as the one he had beore the war. He took ajob at a Volkswagen dealership in Pomona, Caliornia in

order to nance a band. He soon discovered he had twoloves: making music and selling cars.

I know the two careers dont really go together, but I really loved both. A ew years later I ound a way

    I could link

these two jobs.I wrote a song called,

    Te Volkswagon Song Polka,

and had my band perorm it.

In 1941, when Catron started working with BenPollack, he began to arrange and write songs. Pollackreally encouraged me to write, so I did. Ater all, I

realized, even at that young age, how talented BenPollack was.

When Catron landed a job with the Union OilCompany Radio Program, he took over as head arranger.Years later, he was head arranger and writer or KFI, aSouthern Caliornia radio station with Lawrence Welk

and Freddy Martin. Te show ran rom 1963 to 1966.During this time, he wrote some remarkable songs such

as Valerie, A Little Aection, and Teres a ime anda Place or Everything.

In 1964, he wrote a poignant song about theassassination o John F. Kennedy titled Te Big D. A

recording o the song is located in the Dallas, exasMuseum.

Said Catron, Some olks, have a hard time makingsense o my career. o them he said, I got to do what I

    loved.

Te glorious weather o Portlands late

weather or those who were able to take

    breaks. Te Portland Farmers Market

on Saturday morning is a treat not to

be missed. I may be biased, but this isthe best armers market around. Fresh

rom the arm produce, cheeses, chicken,

bee (and yak and elk too!), eggs, pork,

o Portlands best ches providing pates,

music abound. I you can tear yoursel

away rom the dancing, dont miss the

And speaking o the dancing, theColumbia Star Ball incorporated both

Pro/Am and Amateur events. Some o

the highest caliber dancers rom around

    competitors rom Arizona, Caliornia,

Ohio and Canada. It was great to see

such wide-ranging support or the rst

in Portland since the days o the Oregon

    In addition to terric

draw more teams rom other states.

We were treated to a antastic show

by Blackpool, UK and US Proessional

Northwest avorites, this dynamic andversatile couple gave a tremendous

    I TenDance

o odd Marsden and SuzieHardt, the sight o the73-year-old woman couldhave been all the inspiration they

needed to compete at the world

level. She danced the Latin stylesat the Senior I IDSF en Dance

    championships with ar more

    exuberance than seemed possible

or someone her age. Yet there she

was, moving with the energy o

someone hal her age. But beyond

that, everyone on the foor was a

testament to what even an aging

    body could do.

Palma, the largest city on the

    Mediterranean island o Majorca

o the coast o Spain, played host

to the IDSF Senior I en Dance

    Championship early in May. A

    gorgeous island o historic villages,

    cobblestone streets, ancient

buildings with a history boasting all

the way back to the Roman Empire,

Palma was also a testament to a

lesson learned at the competition or

    Hardt: Age brings beauty.

Very ew seniors do the ten

dance; to see other seniors compete

at that level as well is very inspiring,

said Hardt. Most dancers in the

    Senior division either dance

    Standard or Latin exclusively. Few

dance both. One reason or this,

    Hardt eels, is age.

    Competitors have to be

    approximately 35 years old or

older to be eligible to compete in

the Senior I age group. For many

ballroom dancers that dont grow up

dancing ballroom rom an early age, this is around the age where people

rst begin to experiment with dance

    lessons, let alone compete.

    Ultimately, one o the lessons

drawn rom the competition or the

couple is that there is always more

we can still do. For those worried

about getting in shape to dance,

    Marsden and Hardt leave these

    words:

    More seniors should compete.

    Sometimes people think theyre too

old or too old to start, but the whole

    competition thing keeps you in

shape. You dont think about it but

it keeps you in shape. In competing

you get in good physical shape. You

dont have to try to get in shape, you

    just will get into it.

    Marsden didnt even begin

dancing ballroom until he was 35

and Hardt introduced it to him. But

at the world level o competition,

    age doesnt have meaning. Our

bodies can do so much more, even

at that age. It changes your sense o

what it means to age, said Hardt.

In a showing o world class graceand beauty, Seoul, Korea hostedthe 2010 IDSF Youth Standardchampionships in the Olympic park

1988 summer games. USA Dancerepresentatives Marek Klepadlo and

    Angelika Dechnik and Daniel Shapiro

and Katya Kovalyova danced to 33rd

    competitive eld o 59 couples.

    American Dancer tracked down

Daniel Shapiro and talked to him

    about their experience:

AD: What were some o the

highlights o competing in Korea?DS:Well, the main one o course

was the dancing, seeing all the other

countries rom the dance world and

    witnessing each individuals style.

But, alongside the dancing aspect o

it, just seeing Koreas culture and how

they live their daily lives showed me

how dierent each society is rom our

    own.

AD: Youve been to our otherworld events, but this is your rst one

in the youth category. Is the level o

    competition much higher?

DS: It denitely is but its also very

good or both Katya. It makes us

realize how we really have to step up

now and helps us to set our goals to

even out and decrease the diculty o

doing well in youth world events

AD:So what stood out to you the

most about the competition, or the

    competitors?

    DS: Te tension between everyone

and the drive that each competitor

had to try to outdo the othercompetitor.

AD: Was it exciting to be part o

    that tension?

DS: Both yes and no. Yes, because

it produced a lot o drive within the

partnership to do our best, but at the

same time no, because all that tension

didnt give us the opportunity to just

breath and relax because we were all

stressed about trying to do our bestdue to the tension between everyone.

    AD: Now that youve experienced

a higher level o tension, do you think

that youll be ready to handle it next

    time?

    DS: Denitely. Especially because

we witnessed it, but also ater the

    World Championship when we got

back to New York, we really analyzed

our perormance and discussed itwith our coaches. Tey have really

helped us achieve a whole new level

o calm and maturity within our

    O

    ver the past years USA

    Dance has experienced

unprecedented growth. While an enormous blessing, one o

    the sometime uncelebrated aspects

o it is the increase o children

    becoming interested in ballroom

    dance as well. Some parents

    and competitors will remember

    Nationals and other events where

only a handul o children appeared

on the foor, but this is now no

    longer the norm.

Its not even that this is obvious

to just USA Dance. People outside

    our organization have noticed the

growth as well. PBS Kids recently

    interviewed some o the ballroom

kids o USA Dance on the Its My

Lie blog available on the PBS Kids

    website.

    Te ollowing comments are

    excerpted rom interviews with

    Dmitriy and Michelle, Ivan and

    Madelyne, and Jaryd and Cara:

    IML: When youre competing on

a dance foor ull o other couples,

do you know when youre really

standing out and people are noticing

you? Or are you just ocusing on

    your own routine?

Michelle: When we go on the

foor, its like were the only people

there. We just pretend theres no onethere and that were just dancing like

we do in our studio, because thats

where I dance the best. So I just

enjoy mysel and I have un with it!

    IML: Whats the unniest thing

that ever happened to you during a

    competition?

Madelyne: Once I was at a

    competition regional. We were

doing Samba and my partner orgotthe whole routine, so I had to

basically do all the steps by mysel. It

was really unny because you could

see that we were messing up. We

    still won rst place!

IML: In general, what has dance

    added to your lie?

    Jaryd:Its given me strength and

courage, and it makes me want to

keep dancing. Its given me great

    opportunities because Ive met so

many people and been taught by so

    many people.

Cara: It gives me condence. I

think Ive grown more because o

    dance.

    The bestis yet to come

From June 11th to the 14th, Vienna, Austriaplayed host to the IDSF Annual General Meeting.Delegates rom all over the world arrived at theImperial City, home o generations o western art and

music, to discuss the uture o the IDSF and the big

things that are on the horizon.

Ken Richards, VP o DanceSport, and Wayne

Crowder, Certication Chair, ormed the USA Dance

delegates at the meeting. Being Crowders rst time

attending the meeting, the meeting aorded a bigger

picture on what was happening in the world o dance.

IDSF is looking to expand into everything to do with

dance. Its growing into something that encompasses all

aspects o dance, he said, We need to understand that

there is work ahead o us and we need to orm riend-

ships and alliances with other delegates and ederations

in the world to assist our athletes in the USA.

Tese changes are largely due to the close relation the

IDSF shares with the International Olympic Committee.Trough working together, the IDSF has learned the

steps necessary to make ballroom dance an Olympic

    event.

Te IDSF is very ocused on its relationship with the

IOC; plans are being set or the ormation o the World

DanceSport Federation to be unveiled in 2012. Part o

what will make the Olympics happen is the partnerships

between various dance disciplines under one umbrella.

Tis is how the IOC thinks, said Richards.

Te simplest analogy is the example o rack and

Field. rack and Field is made up o dierent events

that orm the greater whole o the event, all events

occurring on the same venue. Te unication o all dance

disciplines is considered the best shot at DanceSport

being included as an Olympic sport.

One thing that impressed Crowder the most was how

much work the meeting accomplished. Te meeting

began in the hallway outside o the room, way beore

it even ocially started. Every conversation the entire

weekend, whether it was on the bus or over dinner, was

about work and how we could push DanceSport, our

relationships with the other groups and delegates and

how that all ties into the IDSF, said Crowder.

Teres a lot o work to be done, and the best is yet to

    come.

callbacks, and a lot o dreaming. Edgar

and Daniela were a dierent story.

    Producers rom the Maury Show

contacted them directly ater seeing a

Youube video o them perorming at

    a birthday party.

Still, their appearance on V wasnot without trial and misadventure.

For the weeks prior to the show they

    practiced a Cha-Cha routine set to a

Lady Gaga song; however, upon arrival

at the studio, they were told to change

the song and come up with a dierent

    routine.

    Producers dont understand that

you have to choreograph and practice

these things over and over, said Vicky

    Olvesky, Danielas mother.

Yet this didnt stop the young

    couple. Tey buckled down, and

    choreographed and practiced a Samba

routineone that allowed them to use

more dicult movesin the two days

    beore the show.

Sometimes it surprises me,said Vicky about her daughters

    determination. When I was panicking

on the show, she said to me, Mom,

its ok. Well do it. She was the calmer

person in the whole thing. Shes really

    grown up.

According to Danela, its a much

easier answer. We love dancing. Its

our passion; every part o it, she said.
