    research to clinical settings”

  • Executive Message2013 was a year of continued excellence for the American College of Clinical Pharmacology (ACCP). The primary mission of the organization is to provide exceptional education on clinical pharmacology-related topics for professionals working across a spectrum ranging from research and drug development to treating patients in practice settings. The Annual Meeting, ACCP’s pre-eminent educational event, was held Sept 22nd – 24th in Bethesda, MD. Acknowledged as a huge success, it included a full day of Pre-meeting Workshops, followed by three days of outstanding educational Symposia. This programming confirmed ACCP’s reputation as a leader in providing excellence in Continuing Education. A global audience of attendees participated as keynote speakers, faculty, attendees, award winners, poster presenters and exhibitors. Building on this level of participation year after year will permit ACCP to continue to provide the highest quality of educational content and interaction.

As a Member-driven/Member-focused organization, ACCP continues to strive to meet Member needs and enhance the membership experience with highly desirable benefits. ACCP Members are provided with free access to the latest scientific research in ACCP’s premier publication, The Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, including archives that date back to 1961, plus its newest journal, Clinical Pharmacology in Drug Development, focused on publishing high-quality clinical pharmacology studies in drug development which are primarily (but not exclusively) performed in early development phases in healthy subjects. Both publications are peer-reviewed and serve a global audience. In 2013, for the first time, CME and CPE credits were available for selected articles in The Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, providing an easy option for completing continuing education activities during the course of the year.

Members receive discounted registration fees to educational events, routine FDA notifications and ACCP updates, and have access to the ACCP Job Center and various networking opportunities. They become involved and participate in the development of educational activities by submitting proposals

for consideration, and they have the opportunity to enhance leadership skills by volunteering to serve on one of ACCP’s many committees or to mentor Students & Trainees.

2013 was also a year of transition for ACCP as the Executive Committee and Board of Regents recalibrated the organization to ensure future success. A new Executive Director with a contemporary perspective has been named who will manage tactical implementation of the tasks required to achieve the strategic direction, while being mindful of ACCP’s rich history. ACCP maintains its commitment to providing CME and CPE credits for educational events and has invested in skilled staff to support the ACCP’s plan to expand its educational offerings to include other events and formats. Annual Meetings are now supported by staff with meeting management experience that will take the events to a higher level.

We look forward to 2014 with great anticipation. As we continue to evolve, ACCP remains committed to its strategic goals and to supplementing recent initiatives with new efforts to meet Members’ needs, thus maintaining ACCP’s role as a leading organization in clinical pharmacology and related scientific disciplines.

We hope you will join us in Atlanta, GA, Sept 14th – 16th, at the 2014 ACCP Annual Meeting, “Clinical Pharmacology Innovations: Population-based Drug Development to Patient-centered Care.” Make ACCP your membership organization of choice for Continuing Education, networking and staying current on all matters clinical pharmacology-related.

    Sincerely,

Lisa L. von Moltke, MD, FCPPresident

2013 Highlights continued…UPDATE TO CONTINUING EDUCATION POLICIES & PROCEDURESACCP’s overall education program is guided by its educational mission statement. With an eye on the future and a desire to excel, the mission statement was updated in 2013 to reflect the expanding educational program and to ensure ACCP’s continued accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) and the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). In addition, policies and procedures were designed and approved to ensure that the goals set forth in the mission statement could be efficiently and effectively accomplished.

NEW EDITOR FOR THE JOURNAL OF CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY

In 2013, ACCP welcomed Joseph S. Bertino, PharmD, FCP, FCCP, as the new Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Clinical Pharmacology (JCP). For over 50 years, the JCP has been a primary resource for healthcare professionals looking for original research, special reviews, commentaries

and case reports on all phases of drug development from absorption, disposition, metabolism, excretion interactions and preferred uses through post-marketing evaluations. Dr. Bertino will continue to pursue the publication of exceptional, original, peer-reviewed manuscripts as he brings his unique perspective to the position.

FOCUS ON STUDENTS & TRAINEESACCP remains devoted to mentoring the next generation of clinical pharmacology professionals. Students & Trainees benefit from a number of ACCP Student Outreach Programs designed to provide internships or career opportunities, awards recognition through competition for poster presentations, leadership within ACCP or its Student Chapters and a mentoring program designed to provide guidance and support. Students & Trainees pay substantially discounted registration fees for the Annual Meeting and other educational events. Additionally, ACCP’s outstanding continuing education program encourages student participation in educational meetings or online educational workshops and symposia on cutting-edge, relevant topics related to clinical pharmacology and the optimal use of therapeutics. These interactions provide a forum for new scientific ideas and bring together healthcare professionals of various disciplines to meet and discuss areas of common interest.

Student attendees of the 2013 Annual Meeting participated in a Student Career Advice Panel Discussion, an event uniquely designed to provide guidance and open a dialogue to give Students & Trainees the information they require to make the best possible career decisions. The highly successful event featured presentations on guidance around relevant issues from a pharmaceutical career consultant, plus a spectrum of respected, accomplished professionals from industry, academia and government, followed by a Question & Answer session. Students also participated in Podium Presentations given by the Student Award Winners, mentored tours of the Poster Sessions and CV reviews by ACCP Mentors.

  • HISTORY & PHILOSOPHYIn the 1960s, a group of eminent physicians formulated the concept of an organization dedicated to a new branch of pharmacology that dealt with the effectiveness and safety of drugs in man. As a result of their efforts, the American College of Clinical Pharmacology (ACCP) was founded on September 11, 1969. Today, ACCP consists of a full spectrum of clinical pharmacology professionals from academia, industry, government and clinical settings who span the scope from research and drug development to patient-related care and who remain dedicated to advancing clinical pharmacology with the ultimate goal of enhancing patient care.

As an organization whose primary role is education, ACCP does not concentrate on any one aspect of the discipline. Rather, the College seeks to address the educational needs of its diverse membership and all healthcare professionals, covering a range of topics that span the entire area of the interaction between drugs and humans. These areas include, but are not limited to, pharmaceutical chemistry, biochemistry,

drug metabolism, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, pharmacometrics, pharmacogenomics, clinical pharmacology practice in outpatient and inpatient settings, human toxicology, drug interactions and clinical drug trials. The diversity of ACCP is expressed not only in the composition of its membership, but also in its leadership. Maintaining a balance of elected Regents and Officers from all pertinent professional backgrounds ensures that ACCP remains attuned to the needs of all professionals engaged in the practice of or with a strong interest in clinical pharmacology, from the research laboratory (academic and industrial) to the classroom, and from the clinical trial to improved patient care.

OBJECTIVESThe objectives of the College are to advance the science of clinical pharmacology in all its phases and to engage in appropriate educational efforts in the public interest. These goals are to be attained in a manner consistent with the highest ethical and scientific standards.
