American Band College Masters Candidate Sightreading/Rehearsal Schedule 2017 IMPORTANT NOTES Enclosed is the complete score or appropriate movements to the work you will be sightreading or rehearsing with one or more of the ABC Directors' Bands. Note that in each case an EXACT amount of time has been established for you. There will be a visible digital timer on a separate music stand at your left. Refer to it to know how much time you have remaining. When the timer sounds you MUST stop immediately. If you conclude early, do not use the time if it is not needed. Being slightly ahead of schedule can help us when something momentarily delays a rehearsal, etc. Your time begins as you receive the timer from the ABC Graduate Staff member. (See the online list of candidate conducting assignments.) SIGHT READING: If you are a 2nd year candidate, you will be doing only a sight-read of the music assigned. There will be no opportunity for rehearsal and it is expected that you will skip repeats if necessary (understood by the band). Because you are playing straight through, CAREFULLY plan it so that you will arrive at the end and not two minutes from the end when you must stop! This can be accomplished by skipping repetitive or too-difficult passages AND carefully watching the timer in relation to where you are in the score. To cut off before the end is often very anticlimactic for the band. At least plan to arrive at an important cadence in the music. If you end earlier, it will simply relax the flow of the day's activities. PRACTICE THIS! Really: Go practice this!! Also, even more important—perform the music at the correct tempo! It is expected that conductors will be playing in the band before and after they conduct. Just take enough time to be ready so you do not slow down the rehearsal. It is so important that you are part of playing and hearing the new music. REHEARSAL: If you are a 3rd year candidate, you will be doing a rehearsal (occasionally two) of the music assigned. You have been allotted time beyond the length of the music (from 3 to 5 times its length). Where you find this to be inadequate, it is your responsibility to determine sections of the music that can be skipped or played only once and which sections might require more of the time allocated. If you are conducting a march, we expect you to do some styl- izing (dynamic changes, balance contrasts, etc.) whether or not the concert conductor uses those stylings on the concert. Be sure that slow tempos are taken solely for the purpose of cleaning up a section of music. You must determine and complete your work at performance tempo. CONDUCTOR'S SCORE: In most cases, we have mailed the only original score to you. If you lose it, you MUST replace it prior to your arrival in Ashland (or pay ABC $30; more for major works, to order/replace/catalog, etc). Compositions with multiple movements may come to you in photocopy form for the movement assigned to you. Bind it in an appropriate manner so that it will serve you well during rehearsal or sight reading. You may make notes in the original score, but this must be done in pencil and erased before turning it in to ABC. AS SOON AS YOU FINISH CONDUCTING (the last time you appear on the podium), be sure that your name is checked off the official listing as having returned the score. ---> Return the score to the Kay Kassulke at the main registration desk.<--- Scores will then immediately go either to the conductor for use on the concert or to the ABC Center for Research. DIGITAL VIDEO: All sight reading and rehearsal sessions are digitally recorded. ABC staff will transfer videos from the camera to our computer in the commons. ABC Candidates are encouraged to transfer them to their personal computer. Bring a USB thumb drive (1 GB or larger so video may be transferred to your personal computer). EVALUATIONS: Second year candidates: Your sight reading sessions will be evaluated via voice-over on the camera while you conduct. You can view your sightreading segment on the ABC computer in the commons, but you are encouraged to save a copy of your video to your computer. Bring a thumb drive compatible with Apple computers and we will try to make the transfer for you. Get it to the staff before you conduct - make sure it is prop- erly labeled. Third year candidates: As you finish your conducting, retrieve your computer chip from the camera and be sure you know your sched- uled evaluation time with the Graduate Faculty. (In some cases, these sessions may be at a different time and that will be announced or posted near the assessment rooms. Also, there will be cases where some of you have pre-reading sessions or multiple rehearsal appearances affecting eval. time.) Bring a thumb drive compatible with Apple computers and we will try to make the transfer for you. Get it to the staff before you conduct - make sure it is prop- erly labeled. INTRODUCTION: Before you conduct the group, we will have each of your introduce yourselves from the podium. Tell everyone: 1. Your name & what you play 2. Where you are from and what you teach, what level(s) 3. What year you are in the ABC program COLOR CODING: ABC attendees will be assigned to one of 4 units. R, O, Y, or G (R = Red, O = Orange, Y = Yellow, G= Green). Each unit will have a complete instrumentation but will always combine with at least one other color unit. When the entire group is together for rehearsals ROYG always take place in the AHS THEATER. There are also concert units RO and YG which meet either on the AHS THEATER or in the AHS BAND ROOM. In addition there are sightreading units RY and OG which also meet in the THEATER or in the BAND ROOM. Check your schedules to make sure you get to the correct rehearsal space.
