Jan Snider and Kristi Nelson

Thanks to all of you who signed up to be on a

hostess committee for the 2018-2019 year. Jan

and Kristi appreciate your volunteering spirits!

If you were not at the May 3 meeting, or didn't

sign up then, please consider adding your name to

the list when it is available again at the June

potluck gathering on June 7. If you are unsure

about your schedule for the next year, please add

you name at the end of the sign-up sheet to fill in

if someone cannot fulfill the duty on the month

they signed up for. Thanks again for being

wonderful volunteers!

NOTE: July AAUW board meeting on Tuesday, July 10, at 10:00 a.m.

at the Vernetta Smith Chehalis Timberland Library.

whatever dish you would like to share (entree,

salad, dessert, bread); dinner will begin at 6:00

p.m. There is an oven for warming/reheating

dishes. The hostess committee will provide the

tableware and beverages. Please do not include

nuts in any dishes.

Remember that the main gate closes at 6:00 p.m.,

but the gate off Scammon Creek Road stays open

EARLY MORNING DISCUSSION

Norma Green

The EMD group will meet in June to select our

topic for the 2018-19 AAUW year. We changed

our usual date due to conflicts for some of us and

plan to meet Wednesday, June 20. Nancy

Leventon has invited us to have a Potluck

breakfast at her home at 8:00 a.m. Those

attending are asked to bring a small breakfast-

type dish to share because we do not need a lot

of food to eat or to have leftover!

Space is limited in Nancy’s home, so we will

likely be sitting in chairs around her living room

and using our laps as a personal table. That may

affect your choice of food to bring. Nancy will be

sending an e-mail with suggestions to the EMD

group. If you are not on the EMD list and would

like to attend, please contact Nancy to let her

know you will attend and what food you will bring

so she can plan accordingly.

We will be selecting a topic for our next AAUW

year, Sept. 2018 through May 2019. The topics

mentioned to date include:

• Passions

• Women Explorers – a specific person, or a

type of achievement such as Nobel Prizes,

poet laureates, science, etc. (Remember that

in 2005-2006 we discussed many Women

Who Were First at Something.)

• Africa – We will narrow this to a particular

area, feature, culture, geographic areas of

interest, etc.

• The Arab World and its influence around the

world. Culture, business, religion, etc. (A

free monthly magazine you can subscribe to

is ARAMCO. It features this topic and is

very interesting. Nancy will provide us with

the web connection to do so.)

In addition to socializing to wrap up our year of

discussing various aspects of Art, we will have the

opportunity to visit with Priscilla’s good friend

Ilse, and her daughter, Ute, who are visiting from

Germany. Both of them have attended EMD in

the past, and we are looking forward to seeing

them again. Ilse plans to put together a

presentation of interest to us, and she will also

bring traditional Butterkuchen to add to our

Potluck breakfast.

All AAUW members are welcome to join us on

Wednesday, June 20. If you are not on our e-mail

list and would like to be, please contact Norma.

RAVENOUS READERS BOOK GROUP Nancy Leventon

The Ravenous Readers will meet on June 19, at

7:00 p.m. We will meet at the home of Suzy

Johns. Please let Suzy know that you are

coming. The book for discussion is Prague

Winter by Madeleine Albright. The discussion

leader will be Peggy Barth. Just as a reminder, the

location is a change from what is printed in the

directory.

The Ravenous Readers group is in the process of

compiling our reading list for next year. If you are

not on our regular reminder mailing list, and

would like to see what we are reading next year,

please let me know and I will send you a copy of

the latest draft.

Planning Ahead:

Our July meeting will be on

Tuesday, July 17, at the home of

Jan Snider. Jan Leth will be

assisting with hostess duties. The

book for discussion will be Upstairs at the White

House by J. B. West, with discussion being led by

Jan Snider. Time to meet is 7:00 p.m.

The August meeting will be on Tuesday, August

21, at the home of Sharon Lyons. We will most

likely meet around 5:30 for our annual summer

potluck dinner. The book for discussion will be

Sisters in Law by Linda Hirshman, and Cathy

Cavness will lead discussion. Please note that this

is a change in location from what is printed in the

directory.

As always, a reminder e-mail will be sent out prior

to each meeting with the location, time, book, and

hostess. It is important for our participants to

let the hostess know that they are coming.

LUNAFEST II A SUCCESS!! Jan Leth and Sharon Lyons

We Did It!

LUNAFEST 2018 is a fait accompli. Thanks to

nearly everyone in this organization, it was very

successful. At least thirty-eight members either

became Moon sponsors, donated to the basket

raffle, headed a committee, volunteered to help at

the event, or some combination thereof. This

rather remarkable participation rate resulted in a

very successful event.

Attendance was up from last year, as were

revenues. Comments from the crowd were pretty

universal concerning the quality of the films. We

heard everything from "I loved them" to "Better

than last year's films--and I really liked last

year's." There were rave reviews about the both

quality and quantity of raffle items and the

refreshments. (Don't forget to thank or

acknowledge the businesses which participated

when you patronize them.)

This is a unique opportunity both for us and for

the community. We've brought an event featuring

diversity and inclusion to an area somewhat

lacking in both. Making LUNAFEST available is

something in which we can take justifiable pride.

It was fun. It was profitable both for our chosen

partner, the Human Response Network, and

ourselves. We were able to present HRN with a

check for $5213. We were able to plunk $1020

into our Scholarship fund.

At LUNAFEST and in the weeks following, we've

been asked many times by attendees whether or

not we would be presenting another LUNAFEST

next year. This is something we will all have to

think about and decide. One thing which made it

easier this year was that almost all the committee

heads returned from last year. They knew what

they were doing and improved on what they had

done previously. Will they do it again? Jan and

Sharon, for various reasons, are unable to continue

as co-chairs. They are willing to consult, advise

and certainly help in any capacity, but new co-

chairs will need to step forward if the event is to

continue. Will that happen? LUNAFEST in its

present form does require a significant

participation rate from the membership. How

willing is everyone to do that? These are

important questions which will need to be

addressed.

Our original LUNAFEST goals, spotlighting our

presence in the community, helping a worthy

women's organization, and increasing our

membership have been met. The value of this

event to the women of Lewis County is pretty easy

to estimate and appreciate. As one attendee said,

"I just love that this is all about women." Now,

what are we going to do about it next year?

AAUW NEW MEMBER PROFILE by Kristi Nelson

Born and raised in Winlock, and then having moved away, Alicia Spalding has returned to live in a true

“tiny house.” It is located on the same 5 acres where her mother lives but is entirely separate from the “big

house.” She ordered the frame, and then she and her grandmother built the rest, adding walls, windows,

roof, doors and utilities. It is 12 x 20 feet for a total of 240 square feet of living space. It is stationary but

could easily be equipped to travel. She loves it!

Alicia graduated from Winlock High School, attended Western Washington University in Bellingham, and

received a B.S. degree from Oregon State, majoring in basic science and minoring in psychology. She then

enrolled at Bastyr University headquartered in Kenmore, WA, to become a naturopathic medical doctor. She

says she has basically been in school her whole life!

Alicia felt called to return to Lewis County to show people that they can become healthy without being

extreme. She is in the process of starting a non-profit, “Nature Nurture Farmacy,” whose mission is to

support women and children in reconnecting with themselves through nature. By using herbal medicine and

hydrotherapy (water cures), she will have the opportunity to help them grow spiritually, emotionally, and

physically. Alicia’s philosophy is that people should live with intention, find their purpose and be

comfortable in their own skin. Live the life you want to live RIGHT NOW.

Farmacy refers to her huge garden of medicinal herbs, which she uses to treat patients. She selected 75

different varieties of herbs and has already planted one full acre with 2 ½ acres to go. She also has a large

wooded area on her property and created pathways throughout for people to enjoy. She believes intimacy

with nature is essential for the well-being of each of us.

Alicia says the fun in her life comes basically from enjoying her business, gardening, her patients and

friends, and her four-year-old niece. She also enjoys occasional traveling, such as visiting her pharmacist

friend in Tennessee. In March she went to Taiwan and dined on fabulous shrimp.

Even though Alicia is a new member, she supported LUNAFEST with unbridled enthusiasm and sold more

tickets than anyone else. She also procured numerous baskets and services for the raffle. Her enthusiasm

energized everyone!

Welcome to Lewis County AAUW, Alicia!
