“Focus your Flame” on AACN Conferences!

The National Teaching Institute & Critical Care Exposition: Established in 1974, AACN’s National Teaching Institute & Critical Care Exposition (NTI) represents the world’s largest educational conference and trade show for nurses who care for acutely and critically ill patients and their families. Bedside nurses, nurse educators, nurse managers, clinical nurse specialists and nurse practitioners attend NTI.

Will I see you there??

I first attended NTI in Orlando, FL, in 2004. Affectionately referred to as a “first-timer,” the host chapters’ assure that you never have difficulty navigating your way to and from bag pick-up, ribbon selection, vendors and early-bird, breakout, and super-sessions. Whether you contemplate over sessions for weeks or “Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Moe” through the pages of choices at last minute, you are rarely ever disappointed. You’ll quickly adopt favorite speakers.

“Nurses Night Out” was held at SeaWorld that year during which Shamu was detained due to bad behavior. Remember the show, or lack there of? He could have benefited from a HWE standards presentation- under construction at that time :)

It was this same week that I sat for the 1st offered paper and pencil version of the PCCN exam. Were anyone of you in the room with me on that day? We burst out one at a time, ques-tioning “what the heck was on that test?” Most of us were cardiac nurses at that time and the test was designed for a little more diverse of an audience. Tools for preparation were very limited. I’d prepared by reading novels intended for CCRN exam prep. Not helpful, yet I passed, barely, and to this day I reserve a special place in my heart for my fellow PCCNs.

This was also my first travels to Disney, so my friend Kate (name changed to protect the less innocent) graciously accom-panied me to The Magic Kingdom during a rare free evening. She’ll not let me forget my fear of even the calmest kiddie rides, and neither of us will ever forget the expensive cab ride there (we double paid, duh) and bus ride that returned us “downtown” to “the vicinity of” our hotel. The AACN Clinical Scene Investigator (CSI) Academy is a 16-month nursing leadership and innova-tion training program to empower hospital-based staff nurses as clinician leaders and change agents whose initiatives measurably improve patient outcomes and hospital bottom lines.

AACN CSI Academy teams report noteworthy clinical and financial results while addressing some of patient care's most costly challenges, such as delirium, VAP, CAUTI, CLABSI, pressure ulcers, falls and unplanned readmissions. Teams often design conferences or meetings to release their results regionally.

National is seeking examples of best practices related to officer transitions to compile for the Chapter Website’s Resource Library. Email them to [email protected] today to be included in this collection.

Invitations to apply for a chapter advisor position go out on 2/26. Contact me if interested in learning more about this annual call. Update your Volunteer Profile and check the “Chapter Advisory Team” box as an item of interest if you wish to receive an invitation.

Our April issue will feature

Chapter Birthdays

My second visit to NTI was to New Orleans, before Katrina in 2005. There we learned that “What happens on Bourbon Street stays on Bourbon Street!” Later that summer, we were speechless watching newscasts covering the massive devastation. Many chapters reached out to help through our prior NTI host chapter.

My NTI journey continued as I “stood tall” closer to home, at the capital, Washington DC. in 2010. Last year, I attended in the “Mile High City” Denver, CO. As noted by the picture to the left, I may have fell victim to the low altitude there, once or twice. Each year you may feel as though you are asked to begin your preparations sooner, but, there is SO much to do to get ready… registration, housing, flights, joining NTI network, and designing your schedule. My first couple of times, I focused on clinical topics. We may feel committed to do so when our employers financially assist our attendance. Next, I began to add sessions directed toward chapters, nursing education and authoring. By far though, I LOVE the super-sessions! They are like a roller coaster. You’re in the presence of over 6,000 nurses. You will be crying one minute and laughing the next. Make sure to carry tissues for those unknowing “first-timers.” OK, you may think that I’m just an easy sale. Maybe so, you see I made this past NTI all about the feel-good sessions. I, for one, can’t get enough of Bertice Berry telling ME that “You can only change yourself, but you’ll illuminate a path when you do.” Did someone let her in on this year’s theme? How about Christine Cashen’s BOOGIE: “Be Outstanding or Get Involved Elsewhere?” I’ve promised myself that I’ll reserve time for these type of sessions again this May. “Why?” you may ask. “Well, because I Said I Would!” Thank you Alex Sheen.

Anticipating seeing you all in San Diego for the 41st NTI this May!

Focus the Flame!
