Dental section, Akhtar Saeed Medical and Dental College Lahore endeavors to produce dental graduates who will be knowledgeable, skillful, human, altruistic and dutiful to their profession and society at large.

OUR GOALS:

• Akhtar Saeed Medical & Dental College will endeavor to produce medical and dental graduates competent in cognitive and psychomotor skills as doctors, possessing higher humane qualities, acting as servants of ailing humanity. A beacon of hope and benevolence for the downtrodden masses of the society.

• The college will establish standards of teaching and training of medical students comparable to national and international levels.

• An integrated modern cognitive curriculum involving multiple teaching and learning strategies will be practiced for holistic training of patient care meeting international standards.

• National and International standards of patient care will be enforced in the affiliated teaching hospitals enabling the students to achieve clinical competence in managing clinical problems.

OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT:

The dental students will be able to address the main oral health problems of his community

Suggests therapeutic, preventive and educational solutions for these problems. To act as a primary health care provider for individuals and group of patients.

This includes emergency and multidisciplinary comprehensive oral health care, directing health promotion and disease prevention activities and using advanced treatment modalities.

To function effectively provide oral health care in the outpatient setting and a hospital setting.

Outcomes of Community Dentistry Department At the end of the course students are expected to deliver preventive and

educational solutions to main oral health problems in community and organize community outreach programs and dental camps for the awareness and screening of oral diseases in community.

The head of department would

Ensure that the curriculum of his/her subject is properly delivered. This includes preparation and

notification of timetables, teaching schedule, evaluation programs and availability of teaching

facilities like models, charts and audiovisual equipment.

Supervise the teaching being imparted by his/her subordinate faculty members. This would

include periodic counseling of subordinate faculty member especially in light of feedback from

the students.

Supervise and guide his/her subordinate faculty member for preparation of the evaluation tools

like MCQs, short and long essay questions and objectively structured practical examination.

Supervise the working of non-teaching and ancillary staff according to their job description and

duty roster.

Ensure that all the necessary teaching aids, equipment and related infrastructure of the

department are according to the PM&DC requirements and are in proper functional condition

Take part in teaching the students in form of lectures, tutorials and small group discussions

Ensure that all of his/her subordinate staff (teaching as well as non-teaching) are punctual and

their attitude towards each other and students is polite, decent and affectionate.

Ensure that students attending his/her department observe disciplinary rules and those who

habitually break the discipline are rectified by counseling and if needed by punitive actions.

Ensure that a mechanism exist in his her department for providing special guidance to those

students whose academic performance is not up to the mark.

Ensure that a mechanism exists in his /her department for providing special counseling and if

needed medical help to those students who are having psychological and other health problems.

Motivate and facilitate his /her subordinate colleagues to indulge in research activities.

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

Teaches course in the disciplinary area of dentistry.

Develop and design curriculum plans to foster student learning, stimulate class discussion and

ensures student engagement.

Being an assistant professor provides tutoring and academic counseling to the student and

assesses student course work.

The assistant professor requires the ability to deliver a high level of interactive lectures develop

and maintain collaborative relationships inside and outside of the college proactively solve

problems and manage multiple projects simultaneously with high level of accuracy. This position

must possess strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skill accompanied by

proficient computer skills.

DEMONSTRATOR

To demonstrate use of practical equipment, conduct experiments, exercises, workshops and/or

processes and to answer questions related to those demonstrations.

To assist/give guidance, where required, to students who are carrying out practical exercises etc.

Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the laboratory.

To be aware of any health and safety implications of procedures, and take action to maintain a

safe environment, raising any concerns with the course organizer/work supervisor.

Where required, provide feedback on student performance and any issues arising in the course of

the demonstration, to the course organizer/work supervisor.

Where required, to assist in marking student tests set by the course organizer using defined

Lab Assistants are responsible for helping technologists and scientists during lab tests and research. These highly-analytical professionals possess in-depth knowledge of basic laboratory techniques and equipment. His duties include:

Processing samples, classifying results, and recording findings. Prepare samples for testing using various laboratory equipment. Maintain all laboratory records. Comply with the correct procedures, policies, and health and safety Regulations. Conduct laboratory tests, analyze results, and document your findings. ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES Outreach ACTIVITIES: Monthly tests were taken every month as per schedule. Crash program was organized for students in the month of July. MCQs and SEQs bank was prepared and used during whole

year for Student’s Assessment.19

Outreach ACTIVITIES 1 day visit of community outreach program at ALLIED School

Canal Garden on 14th Feb 2018 was organized. Oral heath day was conducted on 20th & 21st March 2018 in

collaboration with Colgate, in which people of nearby village were transported to college free of cost.

Dental camp was organized in October 2018 at Kips School (canal gardens ) Allied School

Outreach program was organized in November 2018 at Mazon School LGS pre-school and junior campus American Lyceum Bahria Branch

ACHIEVEMENTS Distinctions in the subject of community and preventive

dentistry in year 2018. 100% result in year 2018

RESEARCH WORKFaculty members been involved in data collection during field visits. And gathered data has been entered in spss version 21 for analysis and results. original article and case report were published in year 2018.

1. Attendance record of every student was discussed and those having poor attendance were reminded that 75% attendance is mandatory to appear in 2nd

Professional UHS Examination.2. Academic performance was briefed to parents and zoning discussed in which

they were designated. They were asked to keep updated and stressed to cooperate for further improvement.

3. Students individual problems were addressed and parents were told about upcoming Preparatory crash course for optimal preparation of students.

4. Parents of supply students were reassured about remedial classes and extra tests to compensate for missed attendance and lectures.

1. A total of 45 students appeared out of which 23 passed and 20 failed. The result percentage was 52%

2. The students gave the feedback that the MCQS were difficult to attempt, SEQS were according to UQs.

3. Students that failed were called for paper discussion individually and counseled on their weak areas.

4. It was decided that Parent teacher meeting to be called to discuss term test performance of students.

The method of examination and distribution of 200marks shall be as follows:A-WRITTEN EXAMINATION: Total Marks - 90One paper of 45marks comprising of an MCQ section of mark (45 MCQs of 1 mark each) SEQ section of 45marks (15SEQs of marks each) and 10 marks 0f internal assessment

B-PRACTICAL EXAMINATION: VIVA VOCE+OSPE MARKS - 90

The viva voce shall only carry 60 marks (30 with internal and 30 with external examiners). 30 marks will be dedicated to OSPE as per following formula:

INDICES (CPITN & DMFT) 10 Marks

Charting 10 Marks

Instrument Handling including Brushing 05 Marks

Instruments & material Identification 05 Marks

The marks will be equally divided between internal and external examiners

COURSE REQUIRMENTS: Each student is expected to

1. Achieve a pass mark (50%) in the internal evaluation2. It is compulsory for each student to obtain a minimum of 50% marks in both written and

schedule and 1 didn’t agreed.
