Hello and welcome to this months instalment of AVV and we have absolutely loads going on this month. With only six weeks until Christmas and only 2 presents bought, I am so thankful of all the Christmas Fayres going on, not to mention Leabrooks Gallery & Leabrooks Interiors Christmas Fair from where I purchased most of my Christmas gifts last year, it really is well worth a visit.

We also have lots of vouchers and exclusive offers to help get you in the party mood from the lounge and Body & Sole who can help you to get glammed up for the festivities. Also, if you wanted to save a bit of money before Christmas check out the website on page 22, it really is worth visiting for all your household money saving needs.

You may have noticed that we have revamped the front page, all part of the second year upgrade but if you have any thoughts on what else you would like to see in the future, then phone, e-mail or leave a message on the facebook page...and keep the reader recommends coming in, we’ve had a brilliant response this month and it all helps to promote local business.

Happy Reading! Emily

Jayne from Riddings contacted me this month to tell me about two of our advertisers that she had recently used from Amber Valley Voice.

Jayne said; “I’ve been thinking of having my bathroom re-styled for a while and I came

across two advertisers in the Amber Valley Voice, one was Phil Bond Tiling

and the other was Bryan Sole from B Sole Plumbing. I just wanted to let

everyone know how pleased I am with the excellent quality of work that they

carried out and at such a good and competitive price, I am really pleased with

my new bathroom. Many thanks to Bryan and Phil.”

As the nights draw in and the temperature drops it’s tempting to hibernate (someone wake me up in Spring!) but there are little treats which would be missed including our delicious Winter Warmers to help you feel relaxed, pampered and rejuvenated.

The traditional Swedish massage is a popular choice in chilly Sweden as well as here, whilst the Hydrotherm massage enables you to have a back massage whilst staying lying on your back. The weight of your body on the water-filled cushions provides the depth of massage, whilst the warmth of the water helps eliminate toxins and increases circulation – it is also suitable in pregnancy.

Or if you prefer to stay clothed, an Indian head massage is simply delicious for relaxation, or an Aromatherapy Facial not only helps with your mood, but helps you look and feel a few years younger. Reflexology treats much more than just your feet and Seichem (like Reiki) evolved to treat all of you.

Choose a combination of 2 fabulous treatments, tie them together with a complimentary warming foot soak and a drink and you have a treat to help you feel good at the very affordable price of only £45. It’s a great way of trying a variety of treatments to see which you like the best – a bit like a Therapy Pick ‘n Mix!

Suddenly Winter is starting to look more appealing! Create some time for yourself and bring a friend – or treat someone who deserves to feel better with a Gift Voucher?

Warm up for Winter

Evelyn Minall

01332 553332

07834 286095

This month I treated myself to an afternoon of total luxury and pampering at this amazing place where I could disappear for an afternoon and feel like I was on a desert island’….and guess what, it’s only about 20 minutes from my doorstep!!

I went in there with an absolutely stinking cold and looking like the walking dead and I got a really friendly greeting in a wonderful, relaxing environment. Evelyn then presented me with the ‘warm up for winter’ card and I chose to try the Hydrotherm massage and an Aroma Therapy Facial Massage before I went into a an absolutely gorgeous room that would rival the rooms in Champneys and Eden.

I got started with a Lemongrass and Pine essential oil Foot Soak, which were chosen specifically for me to boost my immune and lymphatic system. I then moved onto the Hydrotherm treatment which was unusual but really effective. I have been lucky enough to treat myself to massages in the past but I had no idea what a Hydrotherm massage was until Evelyn explained it to me.

Now this may sound scary but basically, instead of the usual position of laying on my front , I am laying on my back with a heated water filled cushion underneath me! I thought to myself, ‘how can this possibly work…’ but actually, the warm of the cushion mixed with my own body weight provides me with the down force needed and Evelyn was able to gently massage me between the cushion and my back. I think this is a brilliant treatment for anyone but especially expectant mothers and elderly patients.

It was totally relaxing and it didn’t hurt like it sometimes does (I’m hunched over a computer most days so I carry a lot of tension in my shoulders and neck!!). I then moved onto the Facial Massage which used aromatherapy oils, again specifically tailored for my cold and cold stones, all to open and clear the sinuses.

Well I walked out of there on air (although I looked like a scruff with essential oil in my hair!) and I didn’t ache and my cold cleared up within a day or two of that treatment. I felt so special and I would be ecstatic to have that as a gift...hint, hint husband!!

This month we’re back in South Normaton for another lovely walk that gives you the chance to see a bit more of your local area. This ‘figure of eight’ walk takes you from the centre of South Normanton , around the local fields and countryside and back to where you began. There will be plenty of opportunities to let your dogs off the lead but as always take care to ensure their safety & abide by the country code at all times. A big thanks goes out to Jill and David from JH Legal who submitted this fab walk.. if you have a favourite walk of your own why not share it with us by email at [email protected] or by calling Emily on 01773 604178 or 07891 639638.

3 1/2 Mile Circular Walk around the countryside near South Normanton A gentle walk for you and your dog that gives you a chance to see a bit of the local countryside. The route will take about 1 1/2 hours. It is a fairly even walk but the terrain can be slippery and boggy so a good pair of boots or wellies may be handy

-1- At the Clock Inn turn into Shiners Way, then immediate left onto Lees Lane. -2- Follow Lees Lane to the end. On the right you will see the entrance to S. Norman-

ton Football Club. Go straight ahead through a metal gate to follow a farm track down the hill.

-3- Follow the track almost to the end where you will see a metal gate ahead and a wooden gate on your right. Between two wooden gates, turn right to go over a style.

-4- After crossing the style, go straight ahead along a narrow footpath. -5- At the end of the path, cross another style and turn immediately right.

Keeping the chain link fence on your left, walk ahead for approx. 50yds, then turn left to pass over another style.

-6- Continue along this path until you reach a small gate. Go through the gate and turn immediate right. Ignoring the style on your left go straight ahead along a track.

-7- As you continue, the track bends to the right and eventually you will see a style straight ahead of you. Ignore this style but pass over the style on your left and onto a footpath.

-8- Go straight ahead passing through a small gate and eventually into a lane.

-9- Continue to the end of the lane and onto Meadow Lane. At the end of the roadturn left and immediately right onto Carr Lane.

-10-At the end of Carr Lane, the road bends sharply right into Sporton Lane. Here you will turn left onto a lane, shortly the lane bears right but you go straight ahead onto a footpath.

chooses to follow this route and encourages all walkers to obey all byelaws and signs and to respect the

area they are walking in, ensuring they pick up all dog mess and obey the countryside code at all times.

-11- Follow the path down the hill to the end to pass over a style into a field. Cross the field and pass over another style. Now climb down some steps and turn immedi-ately right onto a well laid bridle path.

-12-Follow the bridle path and pass underneath the motorway. Shortly after you will cross two river bridges and then turn right through a kissing gate onto a foot-path.

-13-Follow this path to the end and turn right onto a lane. The lane crosses over the motorway and eventually bends left back to the junction of Carr Lane and Spor-ton Lane.

-14-Follow Sporton Lane to the end and turn right, back onto the main road. Eventu-ally this will lead you back to the Clock Inn.

We would like to invite you to a very special Christmas Market to be held on Saturday, the 24th and Sunday, the 25th November, 2012, from 10 am until 4 pm. It’s just a month before the big day itself and time to purchase those unique gifts which will show the love and thought you have put into giving to your nearest and dearest at Christmas.

You can choose from a selection of items: jewellery, handbags, room fragrances, cards, cushions, quilting, paintings, sculptures, stained glass, ceramics – and much more! A number of the artists/producers will be on hand to tell you about their products and to deal with any special requests or commissions.

In addition, in keeping with the Christmas spirit, coffee and cake will be served in the Coffee Shop – and, of course, you are welcome to enjoy, (and perhaps purchase), the paintings displayed throughout the Gallery as a whole.

The market will be held in the Conference Centre attached to Leabrooks Gallery at 36, Leabrooks Road, Somercotes DE55 4HB, with parking being available in front of the Gallery and also in front of Leabrooks House. Come and spoil yourself – whilst also thinking of others!

Top Tip Don’t forget the tulips. All your other bulbs should be in now; but this is

the best time for planting this most exotic of spring arrivals.

The rake’s progress is the name of the game. Take the last of the leaves from lawns to provide light and air. You can leave them in well planted borders – worms will pull

them down - but make sure alpines and herbs are clear. A wet cold soggy blanket is not what they need at this

time of year.

Bubble wrap your terracotta pots or they’ll crack if we get a hard winter and lift them onto crocks or pot feet to

promote drainage.

Don’t feel you have to cut everything back hard. Insects which will help you next year such as ladybirds, will munch the first aphids which

can overwinter in decaying stems and slug-eating beetles enjoy the habitat of mouldy foliage.

Don’t forget to mention the Amber Valley Voice when responding to Ads

The Patients Group meet monthly or bi-monthly on a Tuesday evening at 6.30pm – 7.45pm.at Parkside Surgery, Church Street, Alfreton. The group from a cross section of the practice population will meet regularly to work with the practice to identify any areas that could improve the delivery of services to patients, in addition to volunteering to help the practice with various projects, as necessary. If you would be interested in joining the group please contact the practice on 01773 546900 and leave your details, and a member of staff will contact you with the date of the next meeting. Numbers are limited due to room size but we would be pleased to see you.

PARKSIDE SURGERY NEEDS YOU!

In this edition of Amber Valley Voice we would like to take the opportunity to remind residents about making sure that property is secure and the importance of taking a few simple safety precautions to make sure your festive season isn’t ruined by crime.

Be extra careful if you’re out shopping in a busy area as crowded shops are a prime location for pickpockets. Don’t take a lot of cash with you, stay alert to where your purse or wallet is and try not to carry too many bags at one time. If you do take your shopping bags back to the car, store them in the boot and not on the back seat. Expensive Christmas presents can be a huge temptation for the potential thief.

When you get all those lovely gifts home we would advise you not to put them in full view of any windows as this can also be a target for burglars over the Christmas period. Keep them somewhere safe until the big day.

If you would like any more security advice, you can contact us by calling 101, the non-emergency number for Derbyshire police,

email [email protected] or visit www.derbyshire.police.uk for more information.

Festive Advice from your local neighbourhood team

Page 30: Amber Valley Voice, Swanwick, Riddings and Leabrooks Edition, November/December 2012

30 30

Well it's that time of year, autumn. I cannot abide it, don’t get the idea that I'm a 100% misery though, because I love the spring. Why don't I like it? Well it's not the cold or damp or indeed the darkness. No it's the trio of events that lead us into winter and bring despair into my grumpy life. Ripley fair, Halloween and bonfire night. The three things guaranteed to put a hole in my pocket and my kid's teeth. This year we took my daughter's friend Rebecca, which meant that Jessica had someone apart from her dad to share the gut jumping rides. The hook a bloody duck at £2.50 a shot was good this year as was the darts stall, I've known empty dog poo bags that weigh more than those darts, nevertheless I was happy to win a fabric ball, the look of pride on my son James' face will stay with me forever. Then it's my favourite, Halloween, also known as the 'let's knock on doors and ask for some cheap sweets festival'. I can't remember when this American rubbish supplanted 'mischievous night' but it was a sad day. And so to bonfire night, you might probably enjoy it, if you are lucky enough to live in an area that allows bonfires. You probably don’t enjoy it if you are old, have a dog or are

Catholic. Bring on spring 2013, lighter days and some warmth.

This brings me to your burning questions, some of which were a little flippant. To Steve Boot, sorry I cannot answer that in a family read publication, but my rhetorical question to you is. Do you know where you can get a half decent haircut in Amber Valley? To Marlaine (Steampacket regular), Robin Hood was not from Nottingham, you are thinking of the Sherriff, hence the name. The answer to your other question is a definite NO. To my wife Liz, whose question was 'why have you time to write this piece, but not finish the bathroom'. Well the answer will not enamour me to you, but it may help my fellow man. Never finish a job completely, so that when the wife wants you to start another one you've got a ready made excuse. Finally, in answer to Angie who works at Booths in Swanwick. Yes, you are the bestest shop assistant in Swanwick. Speaking of Booths, they still have a few copies of my book 'death of the regular'. The perfect Christmas pre-sent for the one you love.

Please keep the questions coming.
