o Frame the action within the green screen borders Shoot video Edit video

o Use masking to insert a still image into the video

Intro / Content Outline (6 mins) Welcome to Green Screen class! Name Game: Say your name and your favourite movie special effects

Ask Raise your hand if you have ever taken a picture! Raise your hand if you have ever taken a video! Raise your hand if you have used a green screen before! Dig deeper. See what the

students backgrounds areGround Rules

Be careful with our iPad- use them with respect Work with your buddy and make sure you take turns. Let the librarian know if you have to leave the room. The bathrooms + water fountain are just outside the room

Class Info Describe activities / objectives Do Ink: paid app (not pre-installed on your iPad (purchase from App Store) We are not experts, but we know the basics. Feel free to share what you know /

learn as we go We are all learning so feel free to ask questions of the librarian and fellow students Hands-on class, learn by doing, some things will be easy, some will be harder; if you

find something easy and see another group struggling, offer to help; if you’re finding something challenging or have a question, please ask so we can work through it

We’ll showcase some projects at the end; there is no pressure to share with the group

Questions are welcome, but may sometimes need to be “parked” so we can get through activities. Will be addressed at end

Talking Points, Topics, and Activities (112 mins)

As participants are arriving have a green screen how to video from YouTube playing on mute on the big screen

1. Intro to Green Screen(5-8mins) What is green screen?

oAsk for examples of green screen: Stunts in movies Weather reports on TV

oAlso called chroma keyo Software analyzes the pixels and makes all pixels of a certain colour

transparent

2018/05/02

Page 4: Amazon Web Services - YOUTH Design Document:.… · Web viewCreate It: all digital media programs (ex: Green Screen, iMovie, etc.) Audience Ages 10-13 Course Length 2 hours Maximum

oMore detailed explanation available from https://stopmotionexplosion.com/blogs/tutorials/137788423-chroma-keying-for-stop-motion-animation-introduction)

oCan also be blue screen oAsk: Why these colours? Why couldn’t we use a red screen or a brown

screen? Human skin doesn’t contain blue or green tones so people don’t

vanish when the effect is applied. oAsk: What happens if you’re wearing green clothes?

Answer (they will become transparent) or play clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSEQWM6233w (from Anchorman 2)

o In this example, the foreground image (Steven Carrell) and the background image (the weather map are combined to form a single image. This is called compositing

oAsk: What kinds of visual tricks can you play using compositing? (Note: Do not skip this step; some participants may find the concept of compositing tricky.)

Example answers: You can pretend to be in a different part of the world; you can pretend to be flying or doing other stunts

Optional: show clip from Tatiana Subbotina’s YouTube channel (Grandma with a Green Screen) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBiv861NrgAwjHdsWkMYD channel and ask participants what two images are being composited.

OPTIONAL:

Ask: When doing green screening, we want to minimize shadows. Why do you think this is important?

oWith shadows, the green screen takes on two colours: the original colour and the shadow colour and the chroma key software might not remove both if the contrast between them is too high

Note: If the lights are too bright, the green will “spill” onto the subject in the foreground or create washed out areas on the screen. Diffuse light works well.

Roll down the green screen and ask participants if they think we need to adjust the lighting in the room. (We shouldn’t need to.)

Steps to filming a project, Part 1 (demo’ed live)

We are going to film a video of a knock knock joke. We have two people on our team and both want to be videographers; we also both want to be in the film. What can we do? Let’s break it down:1: Knock knock2: Who’s there?1: Canoe.2: Canoe who?1: Canoe help me make this movie?

oUse transparencies to explain layers and compositingoGet participants to help work out how to organize the shoot:

Where should each participant stand? What happens if both stand in the centre of the shot? Possible suggestion: One person should stand on the left of the screen, the other on the right. Each should stand as though they are facing each other.

How can we make the timing of the joke work? Elicit suggestions. You can mentally say the other person’s part in your head slowly to make sure you leave enough space for their speaking parts.

One staff member videos the second (foreground) Have the first staff member video the second staff member

(middle layer) Either film video of a suitable background image in The Lab or

demonstrate how to legally download video footage that can be repurposed (Try www.videvo.net) (background)

2. Plan your project The challenge today is to create a short (1-2 minute, this can be flexible, just be

mindful that all groups need to use the green screen individually to shoot their footage) video

Project ideas (I recommend having everyone in the class work on the same idea)oBe your own twinsoMovie with a ghostoWinter scene video Christmas cardo Time traveloUnderwater (bring bubbles!)o Invisibility (need to use the Chroma Key blanket)

The app we’re using is called Do Ink Ask: Has anyone here used Do Ink before?

This app allows you to shoot video footage on an iPad or iPhone via the camera app for use in your project. So we don’t need to have a separate camera for today’s projects. Each group will be given an iPad to work with

Do Ink can accommodate up to three layers of images You’ll need to plan

o Your project components: foreground action, background scene, photo still (optional) Give participants whiteboard markers so they can draw out their compositing and plan their shot. For example (Display this image on the monitors):

(Image source: http://www.doink.com/support/)oWho in your group will do what joboHow you’ll create your effects (ex. Identical twins)o If you want your video to have a story, what that story isoProps?

When you’re ready to shoot your video, let us know; when we change the lightboard lights to BLUE it means someone is filming and you’ll need to use quiet voices (whispers) so they can get good sound with their footage

3. Shoot video Groups take turns shooting their video footage using the Camera app

4. Edit video Demo

o Open Do Ink appo + button in right corner to start working on a new project; tap Create a

New Projecto The program will need access to the Microphone, Camera, and Photoso The bottom three lines represent the three channels of the Timeline. The

top channel is the foreground of your image; the bottom channel is the background.

o Order is important when putting your project components on the timeline. The video taken against the green screen must be higher up the timeline than the background.

o Walk participants through the rest of the interface:

Source Selector: Choose video (moving) or image (still) to access your camera roll

Preview View: Allows you to see what your project will look like Source View: Allows you to see what a single image / video

contributes to the whole of the project Settings Panel: Allows you to adjust the chroma key, if needed Toolbar: Use for cropping and masking

Demo masking on a still image

Groups work together to edit their projects

Wrap Up/Closing Ask groups if they’d like to share their projects with the whole group Ask groups one thing they liked/learned today Ask groups a project they’d like to do next time they use the green screen
