In Detroit where there are 5 nat ional hanks without branches, 179 s t a t e branch banks are operated. The national banks are in an unfavorable p o s i t i o n to compete with the s t a t e banks having many branches. This shows i t s e l f especially in the abi l i ty of the latter to secure savings deposits.
The convention of the A.B.A. adopted a resolution condemning the practice of branch banking.

Mr, Collins gives ... a brief but clear treatment of the branch banking question as it has developed in the U.S. in the past few years. His 1st chapters deal with branch braking under state laws, and the number and distribution of statutory branches of national banks*
He then discusses the establishment of additional offices of natl. banks under the rulings announced by Comptroller Crlssenger in 1922, later sustained by an opinion of Attny. General Daughkrty. No mention is made of the establishment of additional offices in some states in which State banks are not allowed to open branches
Chief value is that it brings together the facts in cur
rent controversy in U.S. and summarizes them. Digitized for FRASER http://fraser.stlouisfed.org/ Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis
