CITY WALK OF LINZ Linz was founded by the Romans, who called it "Lentia", but there was already a Celtic settlement called "Lentos"; probably their word for the winding of a river. It was a provincial and local government city of the Holy Roman Empire, and an important trading point connecting several routes. Being the city where the Habsburg Emperor Friedrich III spent his last years, it was, for a short period of time, the most important city in the empire. It lost its status to Vienna and Prague after the death of the Emperor in 1493. There are many things to see in Linz. Take a stroll down the main street which leads to the main square. In addition to the medieval town square in the historic old town and the Mozarthaus you can see the Renaissance villas, the old cathedral with the Bruckner organ or the new cathedral. Visits depend on opening hours of the cathedral and/or if a mess is celebrated etc. If time allows, you can taste a piece of the famous Linzer Torte (Linzer Cake) in one of the local bakeries.

CITY WALK OF AVIGNON INCLUDING POPE PALACE Today’s excursion takes you to a guided walk of Avignon, also known as the “City of Popes,” due to the role the city played in the Avignon conspiracy of the 14th century, when a pope abandoned Rome and fled here. Avignon’s lavish Palais des Papes (Palace of the Popes), a fortress, church and palace, was considered the center of the Christian world during the 14th century. From 1309 to 1377 seven popes resided in this impressive building, one of the world’s most fascinating examples of Gothic architecture. Another must-see is the Pont d'Avignon, a ruined 12th-century bridge that once spanned the Rhône and is immortalized in a folk song about dancing on the bridge.

VISIT TO CLUNY ABBEY The Abbey of Cluny in Burgundy was the center of a major monastic movement in the Middle Ages. Its church was the largest Christian building in the world until St. Peter's Basilica was rebuilt in Rome in the 16th century. Although most of the great Abbey of Cluny are ruins, they still show the size and glory of the abbey at its zenith, allowing you to imagine it as it once was. Today, one transept of the 12th-century abbey church remains, along with 15th-century abbots' residences and 18th-century convent buildings. The site also includes pleasant gardens and a museum with Romanesque artifacts. Your guide will show you around this ancient Benedictine abbey. This church, with its uncommon dimensions in terms of Romanesque art, was completed under the abbacy of Pierre the Venerable and consecrated in 1130. Its principal architect was Hézelon de Liège. SEINE EXCURSION ALONG THE “ABBEY TRAIL” The abbey road - a glorious past of medieval Normandy The very romantic meanders of the Seine River are boarded by architectural gems: churches, castles, and abbeys .More than 100 abbeys once covered this region. Follow our local expert to St. Wandrille (still a living, working community) and Jumièges – described by Victor Hugo as one of the most beautiful ruins in France. They both belong to a prestigious group of Merovingian abbeys in Normandy, that later became ducal monasteries. With our tour coach we will take you within a short drive to the village of St. Wandrille. The abbey is often referred to St. Wandrille and is located on the north bank of the Seine. Founded in 649 by St. Wandrille, former minister to the king Dagobert 1st, the Saint-Wandrille abbey can take credit for having trained a number of bishops and saints of the Church, based on St. Benedict's teachings. The entire area is not open to visitors. However, the ancient ruins of the abbey church are open. The monks purchased a Tithe Barn and moved it to the abbey grounds for their church and except during services, it is open to the public. Also discover a small, charming chapel by the monks' cemetery. During this stop, your guide will evoke the former great abbey church and the very interesting classical and medieval architecture combined within the walls of the actual abbey. Continue on to Jumièges, the first sight of the remains of the immense abbey church, in its verdant setting, is unforgettable. It’s one of the most ancient and important monasteries in the western world. The abbey was founded in 654 by Saint Philibert, a courtier at the court of king Dagobert 1st. Destroyed in 841 by the Vikings and again during the Hundred Years War, it was used as a source of dressed stone after the French Revolution. Despite its many wounds, the great silhouette seems engraved forever in the landscape. The vestiges of the cloisters and the conventual buildings are dominated by impressive twin towers (150 ft high) which enclose the Romanesque facade. After the visit, you will have some free time at the gift shop or time to relax and hear the sound of rooks crowing and the wind gently rustling in the trees before heading back to the ship.

EXCURSION TO DELFT

This morning, we leave Kinderdijk per motor coach for a drive through the busy part of the Netherlands, the area around Rotterdam. We’ll get a good glimpse of Rotterdam’s skyline before continuing off to the neighboring picturesque town of Delft. Delft is known for its historic town centre with canals, its Delft Blue pottery, and for the painter Johannes Vermeer (1632–1675) who was born in Delft and used the streets and home interiors as the subject and background of his paintings. The medieval Oude Kerk is the burial site of Johannes Vermeer. Once the seat of the royal House of Orange, the 15th-century Nieuwe Kerk houses the family's tombs and overlooks Delft's lively market square. Delft has strong ties to the Dutch royal family, the House of Orange-Nassau. The town's association with the House of Orange started when William of Orange, nicknamed William the Silent (Willem de Zwijger), took up residence in 1572. At the time he was the leader of growing national Dutch resistance against Spanish occupation of the country, this struggle is known as the Eighty Years' War. Still today, members of the Royal Family are buried in the New Church in Delft. We will take a stroll across the old market square and along the canals of this beautiful town center. On our way back to Kinderdijk we’ll also make a stop to visit the well-knwon pottery “Royal Delft”.

BOAT EXCURSION “DELTA-SAFARI” Your Delta Safari adventure starts at the end of the oldest and wildest arm of the Danube, in a small, picturesque fishermen village called Sfîntu Gheorghe (Saint George). This calm and remote area is only reachable by boat or flight. Situated in the largest compact area of reed beds on the planet, the village is full of traditionally thatched cottages. In these hard reachable areas, communication with the mainland is hard, even impossible when the river frozes over. Just in front of your AMADEUS cruise ship you can embark small Delta Safari boats. The boats have a capacity of 8 to 9 persons each and are piloted by skilled boatmen. After putting your life jacket, you will be ready to start this unforgettable exploration of the Danube Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and vital hub for some 300 bird species. The route takes you to the narrow channels of the Danube Delta, as well as the newly emerged Sahalin lagoon. The shallow waters around the Sahalin Peninsula are an excellent place for pelicans to gather and feed, together with cormorants and black-headed gulls. Bordering the banks, galleries of reeds and white willows hide nests of herons, glossy ibises, egrets, penduline tits, terns and European rollers. The flora and fauna of this almost utopian scenery changes with the passage of seasons. The spectacle is completed by floating leaf carpets of white and yellow water lilies which bloom in June. The boats are not covered, which allows you to admire directly the sky and nature during the Safari Tour.
