2012 AMA Racing RulesGoverning Pro/Am, Standard, ATV and Youth Competition
An exclusive service to members of theAmerican Motorcyclist Association
The American Motorcyclist Association takes pride in its long record ofachievement as the worlds largest sanctioning body for the sport ofmotorcycle competition. Since 1924 the objectives of the Associationhave been the same: to foster strong and fair competition, to providereasonable guidelines for the various types of competition, and to providean impartial competition program.
The rules of competition are intended only as a guide for the conduct of
the sport pursuant to uniform rules. Rules related to safety are made tomake everyone concerned with safety. However, the AMA neitherwarrants safety if the rules are followed nor compliance with the rules. Moreover, each participant in competition has the responsibility to assess
the safety aspects of facilities and conditions, and must assume the riskof competition.
Recognized and non-recognized districts, and organizations within adistrict, must submit any temporary or locally appropriate supplemental
regulations for prior approval by the AMA Racing Department.Supplemental regulations may not be in conflict with national rules. In theevent of a protest or appeal, the judgment will be based on informationcontained in the AMA national rules. Contact the AMA at (800) 262-5646for the address of your district office.
The American Motorcyclist Association/All-Terrain Vehicle Association(AMA/ATVA) prohibits discrimination in all of its programs and activities(including all AMA/ATVA-sanctioned events) on the basis of race, color,
national origin, creed, religion, sex, age, disability, veteran status, maritalstatus, familial status, parental status, sexual orientation, or any othercategory protected by applicable state or federal law.
HOW TO USE THESE RULESThese rules are to be used for all types of AMA-sanctioned Amateur andYouth competition. These rules should be used in the following manner:
1. Become familiar with the definitions found in the glossary.2. Know who may ride and how to determine their proper classification,
which is found in each discipline chapter.3. Equipment standards are listed in each discipline chapter and only
apply to that chapter.4. Chapter 1 begins with the rules that apply to Motocross followed by
chapters for Off-road, Track Racing and ATV. Special rules thatpertain to each specific type of competition are listed in theappropriate chapter. A special rule takes precedence over thegeneral rule when they differ. Example: The special rules for
Observed Trials found in Section 2.3 of Chapter 2 are to be usedwith, and in addition to, the general rules at the beginning of thesame chapter.
5. The youth rules are specific to each chapter and can be found in theproper sections of each chapter.
6. Chapter 4 pertains to ATVs and is to be used in addition to specificdiscipline rules where applicable.
7. Protest or appeal procedures are in Chapter 5.8. Chapter 6 contains the appendices.
9. Any reference to a motorcycle also includes a supermini andminicycle unless noted otherwise.
10. *The 2012rules are in effect as of Jan. 1, 2012.

SECTION 1.1
MOTOCROSS RIDERS AND ELIGIBILITY
Special Note: The American Motorcyclist Association doesn't test the
skill of individual participants in AMA-sanctioned events, nor doesthe Association license amateur competitors or judge ridercompetence. Participants are solely responsible for their safety. AMACompetition and ATVA Memberships are interchangeable.
A. General
1. All riders in AMA/ATVA-sanctioned competition arerequired to be AMA or ATVA members. They also must be
members of their respective recognized districtorganization, if the district requires it. AMA associatemembers can't participate in AMA-sanctioned off-roadcompetition. If an AMA district membership in a ridershome district isn't required, then when that rider competesoutside their home district the rider isn't required to buyanother district's membership card unless the rider wantsto have his/her points kept and wants to be eligible for
year-end awards in that district.
2. Additional membership cards specific to an event or seriesaren't required unless the rider wants to have his/herpoints kept for that series or event. Race entry can't bedenied if the rider has a valid AMA and district card (whereapplicable). Entry fees can be altered at the promotersdiscretion for riders without specific series or eventmemberships.
3. AMA-chartered clubs or promoters may collect acontestants AMA membership card when they sign in andreturn the card at the end of the meet.
4. A proper legal release must accompany each amateurmembership application and the systems must be asuniform as possible among the districts.
5. The minimum age for amateur riders is 12. In all off-roadevents, a rider must be 14 or older to ride motorcyclesabove 250cc. The age of the rider is determined as of thedate of the event, except in youth competition.
6. Standard meets are open to all qualified AMA memberswithout regard to the gender of the entrant.
7. Recognized and non-recognized districts, and
organizations within a district, must submit anysupplementary regulations to the AMA for approval prior tothe first event of the year. Failure to do so may result inpermanent loss of sanction. Supplemental rules mustinclude any class structure not included in the AMArulebook and won't include district or series informationand district policies. Supplemental regulations must besubmitted for approval for any deviation from the AMA
regulations.
8. At any meet, only A class riders (the highest riderclassification) may compete for cash prizes. Any riderreceiving a cash prize will be considered an A rider.Contingency isn't considered a cash prize.

9. No rider under the legal age of majority in the state inwhich the meet takes place may compete without thewritten consent (signature on liability releases and entryforms) of his/her parents or legal guardians present at themeet. An authorized adult acting on behalf of the parents

All releases and notarized statements must beforwarded to the AMA with the referee report and/or injuryreport. The parents, legal guardians or authorized adultmust remain present while the AMA member who he/sheis responsible for is at the meet.

No race personnel, officials, riders, mechanics, photographers and anyone associated with riders mayconsume, or be under the influence of, intoxicants or drugsthat could affect their normal mental or physical ability.Failure to comply with this requirement may result indisqualification of the rider and/or a fine. Besides affectingthe safety of the meet, any such use is inconsistent withthe concept of good sportsmanship and is harmful to the
sport of motorcycling.
11. Riders and/or family and pit crew who direct foul andabusive language to an official of the sponsoring club, promoter, AMA official, or district official are subject todisqualification for the entire meet.
12. Each rider is responsible for the actions of their family andpit crew, and any detrimental action caused by these
individuals puts that rider at risk of disqualification.
13. All riders and other race personnel must assess forthemselves the track, facilities, existing conditions andother matters relating to safety. The AMA can't and doesn'tsupervise any competition. All riders and race personnelmust rely on their own judgment and assume all risks ofparticipating in competition in any manner.
14. *Professional Motocross or Supercross riders, or anyriders holding a professional racing license fromanother country are eligible to compete in amateurcompetition and are eligible for the cash awards(purse) from the event, but not eligible for districtpoints. Pro riders are not eligible for any factorycontingency awards for the event unless otherwisestated in the contingency program guidelines or rules.

3. Advancement points will be calculated from Nov. 1 to Oct.31 each year. Riders will be advanced effective Jan. 1 ofthe following year. For advancement from B to A, a riders
age will be determined as of Oct. 31
of the current year.4. In series that roll over into a new year, riders must begin
